What would you say his actual strengths were.
He always seemed to be one of those unusual players, like a Thomas Muller that it's hard to tell.
Not quick, not creative, not a tackler, not good at delivering the ball etc.
Muller just had that knack of positioning to score quite a few.
Muller is a good comparison.
His movement off the ball was world class. The amount of times he slipped his marker and popped up in awkward positions was so impressive. He also opened up space for Kane by making said runs, and generally made us less predictable.
Was also accurate with his headers and a very good finisher. Probably our second best after Kane, and yes better than Son in terms of putting away the chances you would expect.
His passing was also really underrated imo. He played a hell of a lot of defence splitting through balls in for Kane and 17/18 showed he was starting to pick up more assists. His clever little flicks etc go nowhere now, but at his best they made us unpredictable and it was mostly fun to watch.
Mostly though he had a fantastic relationship on the pitch with Kane and we badly miss that chemistry they had. His weaknesses were pretty clear (often tried too much, lost the ball too often, short passing could be erratic, not always the most mature player) but this idea he was just a nothing player who had a good patch of form is nonsense. He was clearly a big talent, still is, not on the level of a Gerrard/lampard but certainly that of a very good attacking midfield player.
The way the team are right now isn’t exactly set up for an out of form player to sort himself out.
