PLOT - Two young Traveller boys "steal" their horse back after it was sold by a corrupt policeman. They are tracked to the west of Ireland by the police, and also their father who still grieves over the death of his wife in child-birth and has been neglecting the welfare of the children whilst he drinks himself senseless. A hint of myth and the supernatural.

Gabriel Byrne is easy on the eye, but Ellen Barkin was a bit superfluous.

Two amazing child actors and the story doesn't get mawkish.

Rating - 10/10 from me.

Bridge at Ramegen

Plot: Jerries want to blow up the last remaining bridge into Germany to stop the allies flooding through on their way to Berlin. The yanks are ordered to take the bridge at any cost.

Rating: not as good as 'A bridge too far' but a solid 6 out 10

Babel

The events in the life of an American tourist couple, a nany and her nephew, a Morroccon family especially the two young brothers, a Japanese mute and deaf girl are loosely inter-related

It has its moments time and again and is a good movie to watch.

The Ringer

Plot: A young guy's only option to erase a really bad debt is to rig the Special Olympics by posing as a contestant.

Johnny Knoxville acting 'spechul'. Dodgy material in some peoples eyes, the jokes were held back a bit IMHO. Should have been funnier than what it was. Typical hollywood.

Rating: 5 out of 10

Jackass Number 2

Plot: Contrary to what the title says, there's not as much number 2 in this one as the original Jackass. No plot, of course, just a bunch of guys doing crazy stunts.

Johnny Knoxville proves himself in this film as the undisputed master of the Jackass Franchise. Of all the stunts and gags, Knoxville in always in the most painful and/or dangerous and he doesn't even blink.

If you enjoyed the first one even marginally, you must lie, cheat, steal; do whatever you have to do to see this film. How they went over and above what they did in the first one is beyond me. How good? Of the three of us who were watching, we all had one separate instance where we had to get up and walk away or risk vomiting. Really. The rest of the time was spent in disbelief or laughing my ass of.

Rating: 8.5/10 (there's a bit too much man-ass for my liking)

Clerks

Plot: A day in the lives of two convenience clerks named Dante and Randal as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the store roof.

This is one of my favourite movies, arguably the best small budget movie made big. The argument over the merits of blowing up the Death star in star wars has to be one of the best bits of scripting. Likewise the guy blagging some quality toilet paper and a porn mag so that he can go for a wank in the toilets.

Rating: 10/10 - they dont come much better than this

all of kevin smiths fils have been top draw, i loved mallrats, but clerks is a stand out film, clerks 2 was good also, but not as funny as the first

Once Upon a Time In America

Plot:

Epic, episodic, tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, the movie centers on small-time hood David 'Noodles' Aaronson (Robert De Niro) and his lifelong partners in crime; Max(James Woods), Cockeye(William Forsythe) and Patsy(James Hayden) and their friends from growing up in the rough Jewish neighborhood of New York's Lower East Side in the 1920s, to the last years of Prohibition in the early 1930s, and then to the late 1960s where an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.

(Also briefly stars Joe Pesci)

Rating 10/10

Denzel Washington at his finest, this film isn't so typically hollywood with the way it ends but non the less plenty of action and big budget explosions. It was the characters that drew me in, and the director does a great job of establishing an emotional attachment. Following a wave of kidnappings in Mexico City, a washed up CIA operative John Creasy who is drifting through life as an alcoholic (Denzel) is persuaded to become a bodyguard for a wealthy businessmans 9 year old daugher. Pita is at first barely tolerated by Creasy but she persists and brings him new found purpose in life, gradually breaking through his hard exterior.

Pita gets kidnapped... Despite being seriously wounded during the kidnapping, Creasy vows to kill anyone involved in the kidnapping, and he will go to any lengths to do so..

The only thing that ruined "Man on Fire" was the kid. Feck! Body of a 7 year-old but mind of a 40 year-old.

I certain thought the relationship between Creasy and Pita was edging on Paedophilia.

Yea the kid was a smart arse but it was all done pretty cleverly i thought, "why are you sad creasy?". Dunno about paedophilia, i reckon if you look for things in films you can prolly find most of them! ;)

Mumble is a penguin who doesn't fit in with the rest of his breed. They all sing their "heart song" but he just can't hold a tune, he does however have the ability to tap dance. His differences see him ostracised from his group and blamed for the lack of fish in the ocean. He leaves and meets up with a cool bunch of Adele penguins, who also dance and they set off to meet the humans responsible for overfishing the waters so they can see the error of their ways.
Mumble eventually gets captured and placed in an aquarium but eventually manages to lead a group of conservationists to the ice floes and hopefully to a realisation that mankind is having an adverse effect on wildlife.

It's a great movie from a conservationist viewpoint, it also highlights the need to let individuals be themselves and not necessarily conform to the rest of the group. The sound track is good and the animation stunning. I can't recall ever enjoying a film more tbh and my kids loved it too.

Before Sunrise.

Plot.
Young bloke meets young woman on some silly train in Europe, and stops over in Vienna, for some crappy romance, with her.

Comment

I enjoyed this dialogue driven film, but couldn't help to think it was just a couple of psuedo intellectual students trying to impress each other. Not as good as 'Waking Life', Richard Linklater's film about lucid dreaming, but a good watch nonetheless, even if it was pretentious.

Better than Smashed
Before Sunset

Plot Jesse and Celine meet nine years after their first meeting in Vienna (the movie was made in 2004, 9 years after Before Sunrise). They've moved on with their lives but their feelings for each other come rushing back as they spend the few hours they have (before jesse's flight) together.

Comment I thought this movie was better than the first one even though their was a lot more pointless talking in this one. the entire movie is like one long scene from start to finish and shows how the 2 get to know each other once more.

I'm going through a phase of devouring South Korean films. Some absolute treats coming out of that country in recent years. Among the best I would mention are Old Boy, which is sheer class, (the whole Vengeance Trilogy is great but Old Boy is the best), Shiri and A Bittersweet Life.

South Korean directors seem to have such a refreshing attitude to making films when you are used to some of the formulaic shite being pumped out of Hollywood. The plots are unpredictable, but most of all the cinematography is usually stunning.

For christmas I got a load more films off the wife who knew i was up for it, and memories of murder is one of them. Also Tale of Two Sisters and JSA, but I havent got round to watching them yet. Will look out for The Host when Ive watched the ones I have.

Do like Asian cinema in general, a lot of quite cool Japanese and Chinese films. Has anyone seen Ichi The Killer? That is possibly the sickest film I have ever seen. Anyone who likes total depravity should check it out. Not for the feint hearted.

The Usual Suspects

Plot
A boat has been destroyed, criminals are dead, and the key to this mystery lies with the only survivor and his twisted, convoluted story beginning with five career crooks in a seemingly random police lineup.

A good movie is a movie with an unpredictable script. The moment you think you got it, you´re wrong. Oscar went to the good hands.

Ichi the Killer is sick, but not nearly as sick as Gozu or Visitor Q. Visitor Q is as fecked up as it gets really and Gozu will make you think you've taken acid.

Havent seen either. But will rectify that. I like cinema that pushes the boundaries of acceptability. You can rely on Japanese films for that.

Employee of the month

Plot: Uncool guy keeps winning employee of the month, getting the girls and the priveleges. Cool guy working in lowest of the low job decides to run for employee of the month inspired by new hot chick. By the producers of 'The wedding crashers'

Rating:1 out of 10. Half a point because it ends, and half a point because i like Jessica Simpsons boobs. Yes, shes in it. Oh and they obviously couldnt get Ryan Reynolds to do it so they got a cheap lookalike instead.

That was a right head-feck...very pretentious mind

The Departed

Incrediby tense film from the man himself, Scorsese, about Irish cops and Irish villains slugging it out in Boston. Leonardo Di Caprio is a cop undercover in the vicious crime gang run by Jack Nicholson, at his maniacal hilarious best. That other bloke, who isn't Leonardo Di Caprio, is one of Nicholson's gang undercover in the police. So it's like other films about undercover agents, like Reservoir Dogs, but double the tension, due to there being two undercover cnuts. Add to that Scorsese's filmmaking, which is about 73 times as good as Reservoir Dogs, great dialogue, nice plot, turning the screw as it reaches the climax till you feel like Sincher's brain as he reaches a climax...

Then they feck the ending right up, ruining the film. So don't bother watching it, it's shit.
