The transfer experience: how triggering is it for you?

It looks like we're heading into transfer season early - probably a good thing, and adding to the idea this executive is a big step up from the previous shambles operation - but it's a sign of how it's become at our club, that I find myself getting nervous. All over again.

So many disappointments over so many years now, generally all following the same pattern. It's there writ large when you look back in the threads. From the very first rumours, through to Ornstein says, onto 'it's on' and the 'here we go'. We ogled Onana (watching that CL final we thought he'd transform our game); got hooked on the potential of Højlund (I remember searching for the YouTube clips of his hat-trick for Denmark); and (maybe) even thought Mount could be a great addition (though I was definitely in the group who were bewildered we prioritised paying £50m+ for him). Plenty more in there too of course.

Sure, most fans at most other clubs go through the same sort of thing, but we have such a consistently appalling track-record of flops and failures, going back for so long now. Never has so much been splurged on so little, to turn a phrase.

Seeing the links to Cunha has me now thinking 'is he really worth so much of our budget and doesn't he have a questionable temperament?', just as thinking Delap really might be our main striker target gets me fixating on the idea he's a huge gamble, who's raw, unproven and risks becoming someone else we'll be looking to shift in 18 months.

So, triggers on transfer dread (Utd style), is it a thing?

I'm actually more interested than I've been in recent years.

Partly because we have a new management team in place (last year they were just forming and not everyone were in place) so I'm intrigued to see what they do. Partly because I'm interested in seeing how Amorim system will work with additions in key positions such as right wing back and striker.

I always enjoy it to be honest. We only think it’s bad afterwards, usually we think we’ve got great players at the time or, at least, hope for better than we see.

I remember there being serious concerns about Onana - even from his YouTube highlights!

nah not really, to be honest I just find all the nonsense and sagas a bit of fun

this summer I'm quite looking forward to it as I really want to see Amorim manage us with his own players in

A good window would be transformative for us, I think.

I don't have much faith we are capable of it.

I would love to have been forced to think otherwise by September.

We must go for this kind of players. We can't shop for the Kanes, Osimehn etc. Our budget for the coming years doesn't allow that. So, Delap, Cunha sounds about right. Proven in the PL. Brings a bit more grit and physicality. Something we lack in aboundance. I guess this kind of players also is in a situation where they hare hungry to prove themself and to win something.

I think doing things early also puts pressure on the players we want to get rid off to leave, as the club could just point to the new signings and say that "you aren't tought of as a starter, these new guys are".

So, get them in early and build the squad.

Looking forward to see a lot of the deadwood and Ten Hag signings leave as well. So all in all, l ooking forward to this summer.

Yep, awful 'keeper who is technically poor and anything but transformative. Insane we paid all that money when there were so many better, cheaper, options.

It is a bit frustrating how long it takes to get these deals done. Particularly when we always have a shit start to the season because we don't have our new signings ready and integrated.

I know we're not the only ones and that's just the way it is.

Transfer deadline day proves you can get these deals done in hours if you really want. You can make first contact for a player at 6pm and he's signed by 9pm. It makes these sagas feel so unnecessary.

I agree. I'm more interested now that Woodward and Murtough are gone.

It was so predictably awful with those two - spend the entire window chasing 1 player, then end up massively overpaying for him right at the end of the window.

I miss Ed and his "lets buy the most shiniest toys from the store". :).

How can you not enjoy the transfer window? This is a very non muppet thread

I’m sad enough to enjoy considering all the possibilities without getting disappointed by transfers or lack of them.

Accepting you have zero control over what the outcome is but allowing yourself to enjoy the potential of something is about where I’m at.

I remember I spent 3 whole summers on redcafe, I call them the hazard summer, the thiago summer and the cesc summer. I wasted 3 whole summers:(

Looking forward to it. Our transfer approach has changed for the better.

But people need to temper their expectations. Everyone accepts we’re in a hole - both financially and performance wise, yet expect completely unrealistic signings.

I discovered Redcafe about 7 years back while on holiday in Greece, I spent most days glued to the transfer forum much to my Mrs dismay.
I slowly lost the enthusiasm due to most signings being useless or a total waste of money.
But I’m slowly getting more excited since INEOs have come in , new ideas etc .
Should be an exciting summer which in turn means something to finally look forward to next season.
Yeah yeah it’s the hope that kills …..

Mount triggers me. Never saw the sense in it.
Going further back missing out on Gazza and Shearer.
The other big one was Marcos Senna. Looked done and dusted and then we just pulled out, he would have been great for us.

Yeah Gazza and Shearer are the big ones
