The whole presidency could end up rather awkward for a lot of people, when he embraces Bernie Sanders’s economic agenda. Deficit spending is one of the few things he can realistically do. The financial markets are already starting to bet on more debt. The far-right gets an ultra-conservative supreme-court pick, law&order policy and a bit of race-baiting. The GOP establishment gets a few tax-cuts and their donors a big tax-holiday. The blue-color workers will be kept happy with hostile rhetoric towards china and against trade without actually doing anything substantial on the matter. Last but not least, the institutions (policy, intelligence agencies and military) will get more power and accountability will be further reduced.

I can't imagine what's going through Obama's head right now... He has to brief Trump in less than 4 hours
What is the briefing about, and why does it take place 2 months before the president elect takes over

This isn't an excuse but -

Eligible Voters - 241mil
Number of Ppl who actually voted - 120mil
Number of ppl who voted for Trump - 59.6mil

25% of the electorate voted Trump
25% of the electorate voted for Hillary

50% of the electorate didn't even bother to participate.

That's sadly the nature of American and western democracy (I bet other countries have similar figures). People don't think candidates speak for them.

And I don't feel shame because - I have never been deluded enough to think we as a country or society have solved some of our biggest issues. I saw the reaction of the right to the Obama presidency. What do you think the Birther movement was about? The hatred for him wasn't policy driven.

We laughed about it, but millions of white americans truly didn't believe he was american. We'll have right wingers now saying, we need to come together to the folks saying 'not my president'. Yet, Obama faced that from day 1 to now going on 8 years.

They called him "Obongo" FFS

The outrage that a ni**er got into the white house drove large sections of his country mad. What do you think people mean when they say they want 'their' country back? America has never been as prosperous as it is now (despite all the shit) - yet, we have people wanting to make it great again...so, when was it great? what era was this? what time period?

It doesn't take a genius to decipher what they mean.

So - no I don't feel shame. I'm sad and disappointed. But, not shameful, because I never thought we were better than this.

Ann Coulter despite saying awful things for years is not shunned - she is allowed to spew her hatred and bile without any consequences.

This was her on Nov 7th

What do you think she meant by that? Ignoring the fact none of Trump's grandparents were born in the US and under her conditions Trump wouldn't be a candidate

I'm sure there is a small percentage of idiots that feel that way, but to paint everyone with that broad brush is ridiculous. There are also many who voted for him simply because he was black. It's all about his positions, couldn't care less about skin pigment or gender. I'd vote for Condoleeza Rice in a heart beat, and seriously consider a person like Herman Cain. I started out in Ben Carson's camp, but he was just way too 'sleepy' for me. Brilliant man though.

Wait, what?
How do you reduce the number of asylum seekers to 0 and for how long? Surely that violates some human rights laws.
I doubt it. The USA have only taken on a fraction of the number of asylum seekers from middle eastern countries that other western countries have.
THE UNITED STATES has spent more than $4.1 billion since 2012 on what it calls the Syria Humanitarian Response, supporting food programs and refugee operations in Jordan and Lebanon. However, the U.S. has taken in only about 1,500 refugees from Syria, prompting criticism from rights organizations and others.

GERMANY is the main destination for many hopefuls. From 2011 to this year, Germany received nearly 100,000 applications for asylum, but 100,000 more reached Germany last month alone as the crisis mushroomed. Europe's strongest economy is bracing for 800,000 asylum seekers this year and cautions that other European Union partners must shoulder the burden or the entire open-border policy of the European bloc could be in danger.

BRITAIN said it would take in 20,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the current Parliament's term in 2020.
http://www.immigration.ca/en/quebec...ember/1992-countries-for-syrian-refugees.html

Even if it did break some UN convention, what are they going to do about it? The USA are the biggest economy in the world. They give aid, they don't require it.

By the way, I'm using the term asylum seeker as a migrant seeking refugee status. Not an individual who has a death sentance hanging over his head
"Asylum seeker" means a person who has applied for asylum under the 1951 Refugee Convention on the Status of Refugees on the ground that if he is returned to his country of origin he has a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political belief or membership of a particular social group. He remains an asylum seeker for so long as his application or an appeal against refusal of his application is pending.

"Refugee" in this context means an asylum seeker whose application has been successful. In its broader context it means a person fleeing e.g. civil war or natural disaster but not necessarily fearing persecution as defined by the 1951 Refugee Convention.

There are a series of briefings that take place from now till the inauguration to make the transfer of power easier. Trump is going to be briefed on all the national security stuff he wasn't privy to yet, etc.

Obama had a Dem House and Senate his first two years to do what he wanted. He spent all that time and political capital on Obamacare, for good or bad. It cost him the 2010 mid-terms badly.
It was 2 years...but effectively much less

Between Kennedy being sick - a replacement being finally nominated, Al Franken having his victory challenged and Senator Byrd becoming sick and Spector switching sides to the Dems - Obama had a filibuster proof Senate for exactly 4 months. August 2009 to Feb 2010.

Remember Republicans had gone filibuster crazy at the start of his presidency.

The KKK are irrelevent and it is easy to make an association between trump and them but that doesn't mean someone else didn't or hasn't asked them to march for him. There is a lot of bullshit at play and people should just ignore it. Racism is something that's been pushed on people and while white people have been racist, it's not a white issue. It's an issue in a lot of cultures but it seems to me with trump winning - it's all about racism = white issue. Just ignore it. Racism was created to encourage race mixing. It's up to the people of America to make sure Trump keeps his promises but ultimately, it's up to them to understand they are all related and if Cliton (cause she's a cnut) had has got in, WW3 would have probably been very soon. There is always a bigger picture.
Why do you think it's easy to make an association? I'll tell you why, his entire campaign was built on hate and racism. The two qualities the KKK love the most. A racist knows how to spot a fellow racist. You won't see them endorsing a normal candidate with values because they won't preach or encourage hate he way they do. Trump has the same mentality, he thinks the same way and it's more than damn relevant.

But that article only says 1,500 migrants from Syria alone, not from any other country.
These things usually have quotas depending on the country so I doubt he can just ban all migrants from entering the country, and all it will do is increase illegals coming in.

Is that really true? If so, this really needs to be being retweeted enmasse, right now.

I love the idea of this idiot trying to peddle xenophobia and being publicly reminded that NONE of his own grandparents were born in America.

Do you think he cares? The majority of his voters will be placated by rhetoric they're not interested in the detail.

I imagine most of his promised policies will go down the lines of Guantanmo. Promising XYZ annually but never actually getting round to it.
He does not care. But they will be mad when they realise he is not going to "drain the swamp" and more or less will be business as usual in Washington.

Also there's a reason the most chanted slogan at his rallies after "USA USA USA" was "LOCK HER UP". He promised to go after Clinton and appoint a special prosecutor. Will be interesting to see what happens there.

You can tell where she wrote "Americans have decided that Donald Trump should shoulder this responsibility for the next four years" she wanted to end with "the idiots".

I think everyone believes that we need to do a much better job of looking at taking care of our planet in things we can control. It's the degree of the whole 'climate change' cause/effect we probably have differing opinions on. Do I blindly believe scientists whose foundations, funding, and virtual existence is based on climate change hysteria? Not so much. Follow the money. Just because I might be skeptical, doesn't mean I deny it all out of hand.

So, Americans are taking to the streets to voice their disapproval of the outcome. I wonder how long they'll continue to protest and kick and scream in general. It'll change nothing in terms of him becoming the next president, but it's somewhat fascinating to see how events unfold from here.

On a more personal note, I'm happy with the outcome in terms of what it means for Turkey. Clinton wouldn't have been good for the country, and would no doubt have acted as a hangover of the Obama administration, fanning the flames and antagonising our dear leader. I hope Trump deports Fethullah Gülen. That man deserves his comeuppance.

Didn't hear any of that during the acceptance speech, which I was happy to see. That said, if a new DOJ finds reason to investigate her and hold her accountable as any other person in her position would be, then it should be done. If not then let it go. Loretta Lynch turned her AG position into a political one. The whole meeting on the tarmac with Bill Clinton was a huge red flag regarding that.

fecking arsehole of a man. Went on for years about gun control, about how enough wasn't being done to curb it, criticised Obama for it, and now sucks the arse off a man who represents a party that spend their time drooling over the second amendment. Hypocritical, attention-seeking stain of shite.
Piers Morgan is seriously not worth getting angry over.

Thats what he wants.

its organised by paid agitators

MoveOn.org released the following press release Wednesday afternoon:

Americans to Come Together in Hundreds Peaceful Gatherings of Solidarity, Resistance, and Resolve Following Election Results

Hundreds of Americans, dozens of organizations to gather peacefully outside the White House and in cities and towns nationwide to take a continued stand against misogyny, racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia.

Tonight, thousands of Americans will come together at hundreds of peaceful gatherings in cities and towns across the nation, including outside the White House, following the results of Tuesday’s presidential election.

The gatherings – organized by MoveOn.org and allies – will affirm a continued rejection of Donald Trump’s bigotry, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and misogyny and demonstrate our resolve to fight together for the America we still believe is possible.

Within two hours of the call-to-action, MoveOn members had created more than 200 gatherings nationwide, with the number continuing to grow on Wednesday afternoon.

That was campaign hysterics to be fair, a bit of tribal fun. I think people will hold him more to the immigration promises.

I also genuinely think as per the Tories here that as long as they believe Trump shares the same values that he'll continue to poll favourably irrespective of what he goes on to deliver.

He perhaps needs a big ticket item like ObamaCare to demonstrate his effectiveness, that could well be repealing Obamacare.

Sorkin Girls,

Well the world changed late last night in a way I couldn’t protect us from. That’s a terrible feeling for a father. I won’t sugarcoat it—this is truly horrible. It’s hardly the first time my candidate didn’t win (in fact it’s the sixth time) but it is the first time that a thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn has.

And it wasn’t just Donald Trump who won last night—it was his supporters too. The Klan won last night. White nationalists. Sexists, racists and buffoons. Angry young white men who think rap music and Cinco de Mayo are a threat to their way of life (or are the reason for their way of life) have been given cause to celebrate. Men who have no right to call themselves that and who think that women who aspire to more than looking hot are shrill, ugly, and otherwise worthy of our scorn rather than our admiration struck a blow for misogynistic shitheads everywhere. Hate was given hope. Abject dumbness was glamorized as being “the fresh voice of an outsider” who’s going to “shake things up.” (Did anyone bother to ask how? Is he going to re-arrange the chairs in the Roosevelt Room?) For the next four years, the President of the United States, the same office held by Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, F.D.R., J.F.K. and Barack Obama, will be held by a man-boy who’ll spend his hours exacting Twitter vengeance against all who criticize him (and those numbers will be legion). We’ve embarrassed ourselves in front of our children and the world.

And the world took no time to react. The Dow futures dropped 7,000 points overnight. Economists are predicting a deep and prolonged recession. Our NATO allies are in a state of legitimate fear. And speaking of fear, Muslim-Americans, Mexican-Americans and African-Americans are shaking in their shoes. And we’d be right to note that many of Donald Trump’s fans are not fans of Jews. On the other hand, there is a party going on at ISIS headquarters. What wouldn’t we give to trade this small fraction of a man for Richard Nixon right now?

So what do we do?

First of all, we remember that we’re not alone. A hundred million people in America and a billion more around the world feel exactly the same way we do.

Second, we get out of bed. The Trumpsters want to see people like us (Jewish, “coastal elites,” educated, socially progressive, Hollywood…) sobbing and wailing and talking about moving to Canada. I won’t give them that and neither will you. Here’s what we’ll do…

…we’ll fecking fight. (Roxy, there’s a time for this kind of language and it’s now.) We’re not powerless and we’re not voiceless. We don’t have majorities in the House or Senate but we do have representatives there. It’s also good to remember that most members of Trump’s own party feel exactly the same way about him that we do. We make sure that the people we sent to Washington—including Kamala Harris—take our strength with them and never take a day off.

We get involved. We do what we can to fight injustice anywhere we see it—whether it’s writing a check or rolling up our sleeves. Our family is fairly insulated from the effects of a Trump presidency so we fight for the families that aren’t. We fight for a woman to keep her right to choose. We fight for the First Amendment and we fight mostly for equality—not for a guarantee of equal outcomes but for equal opportunities. We stand up.

America didn’t stop being America last night and we didn’t stop being Americans and here’s the thing about Americans: Our darkest days have always—always—been followed by our finest hours.

Roxy, I know my predictions have let you down in the past, but personally, I don’t think this guy can make it a year without committing an impeachable crime. If he does manage to be a douche nozzle without breaking the law for four years, we’ll make it through those four years. And three years from now we’ll fight like hell for our candidate and we’ll win and they’ll lose and this time they’ll lose for good. Honey, it’ll be your first vote.

The battle isn’t over, it’s just begun. Grandpa fought in World War II and when he came home this country handed him an opportunity to make a great life for his family. I will not hand his granddaughter a country shaped by hateful and stupid men. Your tears last night woke me up, and I’ll never go to sleep on you again.

Love,

Dad

I've never seen it after an election before. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention.

It's obvious that his presidency has the potential to be bad for certain demographics. The sad thing is, it's not at all surprising that those 'agitators' appear to be the ones who have been up in arms about so much and are actively seeking to be offended. It automatically undermines the public perception of what are some legitimate concerns.

I don't think most people consume far right propaganda though. Seems more likely that they looked deep into their souls and decided they'd rather pay less taxes than live in a tolerant society.
Trying to paint all his supporters as racists and misogynists is simply not true.

People are rather looking out for themselves, and feel that issues such as jobs and greater security are more important for them. Whether such self interest is right/wrong is an issue on itself. But it doesnt make them racists.

Except we shouldn't. Significant data has shown that climate change is being orchestrated by humanity in that global temperatures are rising at a worrying rate on average. Trying to call anyone who denies this even remotely intelligent when they live in a first-world nation and have access to all relevant information, but choose to ignore it, is genuinely beyond me. If you have data to contradict the scientific information that isn't from Alex Jones or some other shite news sources then go ahead and present it, but I doubt you will.

Interesting graph. I only just realised how few votes Trump actually got. Compared to the total population he now holds sway over that's really kind of shocking. President of a country in which less than 1 in 5 people actually voted for him.
surprised by this.... wern't all the commentators expecting a high turn out going into this?

It's very fair to question the motives and behavior of a base that actively came out for a candidate that spewed racist and misogynistic rhetoric, and promised to "Make America Great Again" by going back to an era where anyone not white and male was subjugated.

Now, are all Trump supporters racist? No. Did they vote for a candidate that embraced discriminatory language? Yes. Were they repulsed by his racist and misogynistic rhetoric? No. What does that say about them? Well...

If you have data to contradict the scientific information that isn't from Alex Jones or some other shite news sources then go ahead and present it, but I doubt you will.
I'm not going to get into a back and forth over it. But can you explain to me the ice age, and how the earth subsequently warmed afterwards? Real science is never settled, it is always evolving.

Love,

Dad

What are you talking about right now?

This is not a 50/50 debate, where both sides have points and one could go either way. There is overwhelming consensus in the science community that climate change and global warming is occurring and that it is driven by human activity. The most lazy Google search would confirm this, and give you the 101 if you were genuinely interested in finding it out for yourself.
