This. I'm amazed that anyone could think a neurosurgeon could be anything other than completely brilliant at their chosen profession.
I don't think that's up for debate to be fair. He has done some amazing stuff in brain surgery.
Not questioning anything here. Just asking, since medicine, let alone neurosurgery is not my field of expertise. But I presume it is not yours either. So if you claim someone is brilliant at what they do, you must base that opinion on some authority, and I simply asked what that authority is.

Honest question, what is this opinion based on?
I think it's fairly widely accepted he's brilliant in his field...which is why I find it all the more strange he's so oblivious to other areas of science.

Ah, I see. Well he's highly published in journals in his field, and has received numerous honors from his peers. Did some wiki-fu to confirm this.

It is not like it is unusual for someone to be a genius at one thing, but not so much about other things. You don't need to even take to the genius level. You can be an expert in one field and completely ignorant about other things.
Oh, yeah. I'm not contesting that. Indeed, it's not uncommon for people who are brilliant at something to be complete and total crackpots about everything else. So goes Ben Carson.

I wonder if the repubs are playing the long game and using Trump as a puppet. They can back him and keep him content and block his stupider ideas before they even get to the Congress. In return they get SCOTUS nominees that suit them since he doesn't give a feck about that issue. They'll get to shape voting rights, campaign finance and other rules to ensure that they remain in power while he just enjoys the trappings of the office and leaves the hard stuff to their insider, Mike Pence.

The rest of us are praying that Trump, a lazy, incurious dolt will have a grand agenda to shape the country. Not looking good.

Err.. if you are a "brilliant neurosurgeon" that clearly indicates you are really good compared to the rest of the neurosurgeons.

I'm not going to get into a back and forth over it. But can you explain to me the ice age, and how the earth subsequently warmed afterwards? Real science is never settled, it is always evolving.
Here, it's a bit on the long side but it kind of has to be to get across the time frames were talking about here, and it should be fairly alarming. If it isn't then you should just probably stop talking about Global Warming.

Yeah, it's pretty much the worst situation possible. Well, maybe better than Ted Cruz? Not sure.

You'd just ignore it anyway. I won't waste my time or yours. Thousands of years. Yes, that's my point. Follow the money.
It's an OK question to ask @Jaxdan but you are a bit misguided in this approach. Man made climate change is real. Where we need to follow the money is with some of the proposed solutions. Cap and trade, carbon taxes and other solutions don't exactly seem like they're going to fix anything. The solution is going to have to occur at the individual level by reducing our consumption, increasing our reuse and recycling of materials, decreasing our reliance on plastics, using fewer fossil fuels, etc.

I wouldn't characterize Trump as lazy. He's a driven perfectionist who wants everything he touches to be the very best. Underestimate him at your peril.

I'm more scared of those unelected power-grabbers lurking in the shadows who can do the real damage. It's a dark time. Personally I'm going to do well out of this but the country is going to be a nastier place. I really think America is dying and the future is bleak.

Mike Pence and Ted Cruz are basically the same person aren't they? Pence just hates gay people more.
True, and Cruz comes across as eminently slimy and hateable, whereas Pence has that weird "I'm going to propose you be waterboarded and make it sound like I'm only being reasonable" tone of voice. Yeah, we're boned.

I was asking why he is considered 'brilliant'. In other words, on top of his field. But, regarding your point, I've seen a lot of people claiming that every software engineer is extremely intelligent, and believe me, that cannot be further from the truth.

FFS I still can't get over how Donald feckin Trump is going to be POTUS.

Its the kind of nonsense you'd expect out of a Leslie Nielsen movie.

He's lazy in political matters.
I got the impression that he put a great deal of effort into his campaign appearances. Stumping isn't an easy thing.

Otherwise, he was a private citizen until recently. I'd reserve judgment until at least the 101st day of his presidency.

You're putting faith in polls after the Trump Supremacy?
Ha, fair point. Still, it makes sense that "other" would lean Clinton given the large amount of voters she failed to attract who also don't seem to have voted for Trump. They either didn't vote at all or went to other candidates.

Do you really think he has the desire to learn about the intricacies of nuclear policy, EPA matters, Healthcare etc? Or will he just pick a 'really, smart, tremendous guy' to handle all that shit?

It is really bizarre. I still catch myself thinking it's not actually true. :/

"Can Manchester United score? They always score"
This isn't an excuse but -

Eligible Voters - 241mil
Number of Ppl who actually voted - 120mil
Number of ppl who voted for Trump - 59.6mil

25% of the electorate voted Trump
25% of the electorate voted for Hillary

50% of the electorate didn't even bother to participate.

That's sadly the nature of American and western democracy (I bet other countries have similar figures). People don't think candidates speak for them.

And I don't feel shame because - I have never been deluded enough to think we as a country or society have solved some of our biggest issues. I saw the reaction of the right to the Obama presidency. What do you think the Birther movement was about? The hatred for him wasn't policy driven.

We laughed about it, but millions of white americans truly didn't believe he was american. We'll have right wingers now saying, we need to come together to the folks saying 'not my president'. Yet, Obama faced that from day 1 to now going on 8 years.

They called him "Obongo" FFS

The outrage that a ni**er got into the white house drove large sections of his country mad. What do you think people mean when they say they want 'their' country back? America has never been as prosperous as it is now (despite all the shit) - yet, we have people wanting to make it great again...so, when was it great? what era was this? what time period?

It doesn't take a genius to decipher what they mean.

So - no I don't feel shame. I'm sad and disappointed. But, not shameful, because I never thought we were better than this.

Ann Coulter despite saying awful things for years is not shunned - she is allowed to spew her hatred and bile without any consequences.

This was her on Nov 7th

What do you think she meant by that? Ignoring the fact none of Trump's grandparents were born in the US and under her conditions Trump wouldn't be a candidate
There are just to far many white Americans that if the majority of them were racist and never wanted a black man in office that they could easily have stopped Obama from ever setting in office.

Yes America still has racial issues that it still needs to deal with but to use an entire segment of people as racist because they voted against your preferred candidate is just wrong.
I really hope the Democrat party is smart enough to actually look at the reasons why they lost rather than simply resort to the tired rhetoric that they only lost because the 'bigots, racists, homophobes and religious zealots' came out in full force for Trump.

It may simply be the case that in this time of economic strife ,voters have simply moved away from the known quantities. It was the same with Obama in 2008.

Is anyone else aghast at all these calls for unity and working together considering the reaction from the right to the Obama election 8 years ago?

 I did manage to scrounge up a nice line last night thanks to my table resembling that chick's apartment in Goodfellas.
fecks sake

I actually noticed when I was buying petrol that loads of it was stuck in the raised numbers of my debit card. I wasn't sure if it was icing or coke but I tasted it and it definitely wasn't icing.

The old t-shape. Just common sense.

If you consider social skills a part of intelligence, software engineers aren't up to much.

He's an executive, so he'll probably be more comfortable with high level summaries. That starts today.

No president can do deep dives into more than one or two areas, they all rely on advisors and their cabinet to bring that expertise to the table.

This depends on your measure of intelligence. Software engineers are smart, but it's usually a narrow limit and not uncommon for such specialists to be a bit dense in other areas.
