Do yourself a favor & see it in the biggest possible theater possible. It's a film made for it.

And I echo the above, see the first one before you see Maverick.
Echo this. In a world of CGI snore fests it's nice to get something visceral for once.

Yeah, Cruise said you can't act the G forces and he's right. You can really tell they're in a proper physical battle with the planes.

Not sure how it will translate to the small screen but there is nothing on EARTH that compares to the sound of supersonic jets doing their thing
Though unfortunately this was one area I didn't like. Jets sound pretty serene from the cockpit. They edited in a lot of the noise.

Will I appreciate this if I haven't seen the first one?

Personally i'd say I'd watch the first one before you go if you can. Although it's not a complex film by any stretch, a LOT of the plot is based on relationships/characters established in the first film.

Watching this at the IMAX tonight. Expecting motion sickness and topless homoeroticism.
Any thoughts as to what the movie will be like?

I am actually gonna see this in a posh cinema on Wednesday, didn't think I'd want to but the first reviews on here have actually sort of made me want to. And although Tom Cruise seems like a pretty weird human being, he clearly gets the action genre more than any other movie star these days, so I'm hoping it'll be fun.

The last few messages have deflated me a little bit though, I had no intention on watching the original 1 (I find it hard to enjoy those Reagan-era America feck yeah propaganda pieces), but I feel like I have to now.

You need to watch the 1st to get context and depth.

Just watched it - it’s fantastic entertainment which delivers just the right amount of nostalgia. Cruise knows how to deliver an action film.

Just watched it. It’s great fun. But it’s dumb as feck. And soooooo cheesy. Two hour long recruitment video for the US Air Force. To think Hollywood is supposed to be too liberal! Would recommended it all the same. Just lower your expectations and you’ll enjoy it.

Yeah the call sign bar scene was eye rollingly cringe but happily they moved on from that and just flew some very fast aircraft.

Didn't really feel they needed to have an ice man dickhead replacement either but whatever.

Booked at the Everyman Cinema on Wednesday, and planning to watch the original over the weekend.

I’m so hyped for this movie.

If the military give you unprecedented access to their shiniest toys they're going to want something in return.

It's worth seeing the original beforehand, not only because it's a great film on its own, but it's not necessary. The new one is still good entertainment even if you don't know the backstory.

You know, the military porn wasn’t the worst thing about it. I will probably post a longer rant about its flaws when the inevitable backlash kicks in after more people have watched it. I’ll do the decent thing and park that for now though :)
I think you'll be waiting a while. The public love a good action movie and I don't think a more visceral experience has ever been put on film. That will mask over the flaws.

Mad Max Thunder Road was a more visceral experience IMO (and a much better movie) That’s a matter of opinion though. And I do agree this movie is right up there. All the scenes in the air are incredible. It’s just the other stuff…

Silly Twitter post. Hi US Navy, can we please use your F18 Super Hornets in our movie, do some very risks stunts with $56million planes. Also we dont want it to become a subliminal recruiting tool for the US Navy.

The original is overrated toss. I’d assumed the current wank fest over the new one was over the top. Nope.

Maverick is truly outstanding. Best cinema experience I’ve had in forever. Perfect movie. Haven’t seen a movie twice at the cinema, ever. Already booked to take the Girl to the BFI IMAX next week.

100% see it in a cinema if you’re on the fence.

Wow. I’m genuinely shocked at how much praise this is getting. It’s so ropey in so so many ways. The final third of Star Wars crossed with a scene by scene remake of the first Top Gun. Without even a hint of real jeopardy for any of the main (paper thin) characters. The longer I reflect on it the worse it seems.

Don’t really understand the people in this thread not watching the first one before going to see this or feeling ‘deflated’ when advised to do so. It’s not a big ask and will enhance the experience and fill in the backstory.

By all means watch it without seeing the first one but it just seems odd to me.

Were you a fan of the original? I took the film of the year reports as the nonsense statement it was always going to turn out to be

It's a 30 year old sequel to let's face it a pretty bland film that really appealed to teenagers back then.

Other than nostalgia and fan service this one was never going to be much different

The original was a big part of my childhood movie experience. I loved it. With hindsight it was corny as feck but the reviews had me convinced this thing was different. Which is important because I’m not 10 years old any more. Turns out it’s exactly as cheesy and a lot less engaging because there’s none of the emotional ups and downs of the original.

The beach scene and the funeral will surely be turning up in “so bad it’s funny” blooper reels for a long time to come.
But it absolutely knows it. I don’t think anyone is reviewing it well, assuming that the movie is played straight.

it’s on the nose alright. Still, though, it fails at so many of the basics you’d want from a good movie. A lot of the dialogue and acting is laughably bad. Even if you assume it’s deliberately hammed up.

Saw in the cinema last night. Really enjoyed it overall even though parts were cheesy.
he’s such a dead wringer for gooses son. Great casting.

I also liked Mav’s love interest. She’s quite the Milf.

It’d be much better having seen the 1st one before seeing this one. Lots of reminiscing and flashbacks.

She looks great for her age
Of course so does Tom Cruise.
My wife liked the little message he gave before the film started thanking people for watching it in a cinema.

I looked at the cast on IMDB earlier and saw Jennifer Connelly is playing Penny Benjamin which made me laugh and I’m guessing she’s the love interest given the connection to the first film?
