Troy Deeney on Arsenal

Some refreshing honesty, even to do with giving his son some needle about supporting Arsenal.

Is it not cultural though? Aren't the city lads usually seen as "fake hard"? I've always seen United as the real deal type of team, hard northen battle-born warriors ready to battle if their skill doesn't get them over the line their fight will. Arsenal have always been the team in my mind that was "fake hard" (except that invincibles team who were the real deal).

It was a similar thing growing up playing Rugby. All of the north shore and city boys that play rugby are all 'fake hard', rich daddy's boys who grew up with the world given to them on a platter. I grew up in the rough areas and was always up for anything in a game. I get the sense it is a similar "poser" mentality undercurrent here, but I could just be projecting on it.
Hmm... well, Wenger has destroyed Arsenal's legacy of 'hardness' with his increasingly soft teams. Arsenal are historically a 'tough' team, long before Wenger, or even the Premier League's inception. Even during Wenger's early tenure, when they still had players he hadn't recruited, they were one of the 'hardest' and most psychologically intimidating teams to play in the land - the running joke they have become as a soft team is a very new thing relative to the history of the club. What makes it even worse/funny is neanderthals like Keown have to watch and commentate on a club that is almost unrecognisable to them by now.

Truth is, the loss of physicality is neither here nor there, rather, Arsenal's football and technical class hasn't been close to the pinnacle of even the domestic league for going on 7+ years now. You combine that with their lack of stones for a battle and it's pretty obvious to see why they've declined as they have.

If they had the quality, nobody would comment on their softness because it wouldn't be exposed as frequently as it is,

The guy is an idiot - seems like everyone has forgotten that he said exactly the same thing about us when they beat us 3-1 last season. They were real men and we weren't.

Everytime Watford win a football-game, they are real men. What does that make them when they don't win ? Which was most of the time last season.

Hmm...in those circumstances does he not see the opponent as matching up in the 'real man' department (did he say real man or is that your wording?) and superior in the technical department so they overcome Watford.

I don't really expect him to philosophise about the game, I think as you pointed out he's a bit repetitive but it's interesting to see how he views things. And besides of course his analysis will be repetitive, Watford are only going to beat united or Arsenal by being more up for it, they don't have better players than the big clubs so if they do win it's going to be down to what he talks about here?

I think you completely missed his point. He just said his strength is battling and if you're not up for battling back, your technical ability better be 10/10 otherwise he's going to make it uncomfortable playing against him.

The possible "real men" bit was only said when he said "a bit of cojones". Also with that 3-1 win against us, it was the same. We werent up for putting the graft in needed against teams like Watford, but that has changed now and it shows - we're much more physical.

Deeney has basically sublimated his previous criminality onto the pitch, ergo, he would still be a problem to society if he wasn't a footballer. He's what lower league players call a shrub rocketeer.

I would rather he was a small bean regarder in the legal game than a two-pinned-in plug in the illegal underworld. Certainly left Arsenal quadraspazzed on a lifeglug.

Luckily under Silva he is reduced to a squad role. Lumps like him rarely have uses for a side actually aiming for something higher than a survival scrap

Deeney is certainly the bozz bozz.

They certainly have their uses against sides like Arsenal who don't generally like physical aspects of football.

Refreshing to watch the video. Not your usual cliches.
I mean, it was, wasn’t it? Hur-durr Arsenal are softies, the little old teams never get decisions so it’s good we did today, [insert player from smaller side] I’m not as cute or clever but I’m bloody strong I am

Like someone else said, he also made comments like this when they beat us. I’m really not sure what’s so refreshing or awe worthy of what he’s said.

Harsh on him. He himself has just given a very good assessment of his strengths and failings and you still feel the need to call him a lump? Pathetic really

I gave an even more accurate assessment.

Every team, fan and player complains of their team not getting decisions. Arsenal being softies has been doing the rounds since United beat Arsenals' so-called invincibles by roughing them up. Anyway, we're all different. I quite liked the segment. Better than watching Merson and Souness.

Deeny is a twat and will always be a twat, however he is right in what he says here, getting about Arsenal is one way to beat them, it’s not THE way to beat them but it’s one way.

Not every team that sets out to rough them up is successful, they don’t turn up get on the receiving end of a couple of rough tackles and roll over, not at all.

It’s just more than they should they turn out and just don’t fancy it, and yesterday was one of those days.

 what absolute bollocks. You have to love everyone rah-rah'ing the "get stuck up in 'em" mantra. Where was this when they got piped by City for 6?

He's saying thats a way to beat Arsenal, maybe that way doesn't work on City. It's absolutely hilarious that you've so easily called his opinion bollocks when he was just a big reason why Watford defeated Arsenal just literally hours ago.

Yeah but when it happens vs Asnl its funny.

At least it's more interesting to listen to than a generic interview where they say the same cliche ridden bullshit. Wish more players would forget what they learnt at media training and just tell it like it is.

I don’t mind him trash-talking the players but he shouldn’t trash-talk the manager.

That is bollocks. You can't be technical unless you have 100% execution?

It would be hilarious if this was the opinion of a few people, not the viewpoint of the majority of English football.
Don't be silly, he's just saying if you don't compete physically your football must be exceptional and Arsenal's just isn't. City's is

Even after Wenger leaves it's going to take half a decade for a new manager to kick the institutional complacency that's manifested into every level of that club.

Aye, it's slightly more entertaining than the generic media training bollocks that bores everyone to tears. But tbh, he's just come out with a different set of cliches, like @DWelbz19 pointed out.

Exactly, especially in the PL.

Mourinho has gone about it at United the other way, physically build a squad then look at the technical side.

Hard to take him or what he says seriously. He's a thug on and off the pitch, has a bit of Jamie Vardy about him, but I'd say Vardy is more talented.

I think his point is that if you are going to rely on that style without putting in the requisite graft (something the old Arsenal did very well,) then you better be damn near perfect in doing so (something the new Arsenal does not do.) How a team with Arsenal's aspirations can include the likes of Ozil and Xhaka, I'll never understand.

My mate met him at the Atlantis Palm Dubai at the end of May, totally brilliant with his kids allowed them photo's and autographs even though he was relaxing at the time.

Same time he met Jamie Vardy in the waterpark connected to the hotel, told him he doesn't do photo's with people whilst he's on holiday. Refused two kids.

Deeney comes across a proper decent guy, no doubt a nasty bastard if provoked but a decent lad all the same. Spoke complete sense in that interview as well, Arsenal are complete pussies and are picking up their pay cheques.

Absolutely loved watching this. The honesty from him was amazing, seems a really down to earth and grounded lad.

He'll need to keep his wits about him next time they play Arsenal though cos I think he'll be on the end of a few digs and kicks, but as he said himself he's a big lad so I guess he'll laugh it off.

Has to be massively embarrassing for any Arsenal players that see it though, when he said they had no cajones I couldn't help but laugh as it's what you hear from fans but rarely from players :D if he ever goes into punditry he'd get my vote being as upfront as that.

Wonder if Deeney could do a job for United if he was here, unless he's just poor mans Lukau.

What the feck are you even talking about? So coming from London = rich 'daddy's boys' = soft, while coming from Manchester = 'battle-born warrior' = hard as nails?

Sorry pal but you're chatting absolute bollocks here. This ignoring the fact that when we're talking about football teams here as well, 90% of the players aren't even born and bred in these places...

Yep, met him too and got the same impression. Was a really good guy.

Great interview too, enjoyed it a lot.

You explanation doesn't make sense. Is there a requisite amount of graft attached to playing technical football? Did all the Arsenal misses occur because they didn't "graft" the ball into the net? Who knew that Arsenal's problem all these years have been a lack of bollocks, and all they needed were motivational speakers? Should there be a graft column spliced to the PL table?

It goes without saying that every game you need to bring dedication and commitment. How that links to their defeat, I don't understand.
