EDIT: FT 1-0

CHORLEY 0

MANCHESTER UTD XI 1
(Rowley 16)
Attendance: 1,205

24/07/2013 21:30, Report by Adam Marshall
Chorley 0 United XI 1

A youthful Manchester United XI recorded a 1-0 friendly victory at Chorley thanks to Louis Rowley's first-half strike and an early penalty save by Pierluigi Gollini.
Nicky Butt took charge of the team with Warren Joyce watching from the stands as the Reds faced a serious examination in the opening stages. Gollini was under immediate pressure with James Weir needing to clear from close to the goalline.
When Rowley tripped Tom Ince from behind, the perfect opportunity to cap the fine start with a goal arrived in the form of a fourth-minute penalty. Ince stepped up himself but failed to beat Gollini from the spot, shooting too close to the Italian.
United responded well with Andreas Pereira forcing a reflex stop out of Sam Ashton and the keeper saving at the feet of James Wilson after parrying an effort by captain Tom Lawrence. Back came Chorley with Rowley deflecting over an Ince drive but the left-back provided an even more telling contribution soon afterwards.
Lawrence latched onto a Jack Barmby pass and fired goalwards with Rowley on hand to stab in the rebound after former Bolton keeper Ashton could only push it into a dangerous area. Darren Stephenson dribbled past Paddy McNair, who seems to have sprouted up over the summer, only for Gollini to rush out and make a brave stop before Ince had a header ruled out for what looked an obvious offside infringement.
Pereira showed flashes of his quality but his finish did not match a mazy dribble while Lawrence and Barmby saw efforts fielded by Ashton. However, the hosts finished the half the stronger with
Gollini touching over a Dale Whitham piledriver and blocking at his near post after Stephenson rampaged through.
There was less goalmouth action after the interval with Wilson ploughing a lone furrow in attack and trying to exploit his pace, only to see a couple of attempts blocked. Joe Rothwell exerted a growing influence in midfield as the Reds were only sporadically troubled with Witham spurning the clearest opening for some time when firing across goal.
Trialist Fisayo Adarabioyo took over Wilson's striking duties with Sam Byrne operating down the left after Butt made a couple of changes and he tried a curling shot that was comfortably saved by Ashton. With a raft of substitutions disrupting the flow of play, United were able to take the sting out of the opposition with a degree of comfort.
Adarabioyo and Jamie Cairns traded weak efforts as the EvoStik League side were unable to get back on level terms with Butt's youngsters running out convincing victors on a pleasant evening in Lancashire.
United: Gollini; Weir (Love 72), McNair, Grimshaw, Rowley; Barmby, Rudge (Adarabioyo 66), Rothwell, Pereira; Lawrence, Wilson (Byrne 66). Sub not used: Sutherland.

Yeah I was surprised to see Harrop on the bench considering he hardly got a look in for the u18s last year.

Currently 2-2 in the second half. Byrne and Rothwell gave us a 2-0 lead but Stevenage has come back into the match strongly.

FT. Match finished 2-2. Both teams had their chances, so it seems like a fair result.

Interestingly, Nicky Butt was in charge of the side once more.

No problem GD.

I personally haven't seen much of the reserves' matches, so I couldn't really comment on that.

STEVENAGE 2
(Charles 55,63)

MANCHESTER UNITED XI 2
(Byrne 32, Rothwell 37)

26/07/2013 21:26, Report by Cliff Butler
Stevenage 2 United XI 2

A youthful Manchester United XI can be proud of a tremendous performance in holding Stevenage to a 2-2 draw in a first-ever visit to the Lamex Stadium.

Sam Byrne and Joe Rothwell scored in the first half to hand the Reds a healthy 2-0 lead at the interval but Darius Charles' double earned his side a deserved share of the spoils with Sam Johnstone needing to prove his class by making a string of top-class saves.

The hosts, who kick off the new season next week, began in lively fashion against Nicky Butt's young selection by dominating the opening stages. Keeper Johnstone was the busiest player on the field while Luke Jones should have converted a Greg Tansey corner.

Skipper Liam Grimshaw cleared an Oumare Tounkara effort off the line as the Reds' defence coped admirably with a stream of attacks from the League One outfit. Gradually, openings appeared at the other end with a good run by James Weir prompting a shot wide by James Wilson.

However, it took a fabulous save from Johnstone to keep the scoresheet blank as Luke Freeman unleashed a fierce drive on 29 minutes. Soon afterwards, United took the lead against the run of play when the home side failed to adequately clear a Jack Barmby free-kick. The ball ran to Byrne, who netted with a well-placed shot past Chris Day.

Butt's side extended the lead when Donald Love's cross from the right was hit first time by Rothwell to leave experienced keeper Day with no chance. As the half-time scoreline of 2-0 may have been a little flattering, a response was anticipated after the break and so it proved.

The 1,691 crowd witnessed a determined comeback and Stevenage quickly worked at addressing the arrears. Touncara had already gone close with a deflected attempt when Charles smashed an angled drive beyond Johnstone on 55 minutes.

The United keeper got the better of Tounkara to make a splendid one-handed stop but was powerless to prevent a blistering left-footed drive from Charles levelling the scores. Suddenly, the Reds were clinging to parity as Sam Wedgbury fired over following a James Dunne run and Johnstone pulled off a reflex save to thwart Tansey with Charles spurning the rebound.

Barmby hit the side-netting as Butt's youngsters looked for a winner themselves but Freeman passed up the best opportunity to clinch victory with only three minutes remaining when firing off target.

United: Johnstone; Love, McNair, Grimshaw, Rowley; Weir, Rudge (Harrop 67), Rothwell, Barmby; Byrne (A.Fletcher 82), Wilson (Adarabioyo 65). Subs not used: Gollini, C.Evans.

Is the game against Crewe on MUTV? Believe Vidic, Valencia and Nani are all playing, was thinking about jumping on the train & watching it but I will just settle for a stream if it is on.

And according to Crewe's twitter feed, Nani has given us the lead with a delightful free kick. 1-0 United.

Report: Crewe 0 United XI 2

Nani marked his comeback with both goals as a Manchester United XI ran out 2-0 victors at Crewe Alexandra.

The Portuguese winger looked in fine shape as joined fellow first-teamers Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia in Warren Joyce's line-up.

After Mathias Pogba forced the first save out of Sam Johnstone, the Reds drew first blood. Nani was fouled but dusted himself down to smash a free-kick from a central area past Alan Martin, who barely moved as it flew with unerring accuracy into the net.

At the other end, Vidic made a couple of important clearances and interceptions while Valencia was involved in a move that led to Nani's neat pass releasing Scott Wootton, with the right-back hammering his shot wide. Byron Moore cracked an attempt off target as the 5,077-strong crowd, containing 952 noisy away fans, enjoyed the first-half action.

Davide Petrucci tested Martin's reflexes with a stinging drive while Moore really should have scored when passing up a clear opportunity when the ball rebounded to him off Johnstone. The United keeper watched as Michael West's ambitious long-ranger clipped the bar and Wootton had to be alert to block a Jon Guthrie shot.

But United always carried the greater threat and, after Nani failed to get enough power in one attempt, he ran through to shrug off a challenge that could have resulted in a penalty, kept his balance and composure and nonchalantly steered a calm finish wide of Martin for his second of the game.

Vidic was withdrawn after more than an hour and Nani followed afterwards but Valencia stayed on for the entire duration. Bebe, Nani's replacement, bounced a speculative drive at Martin and Petrucci bent a decent effort just wide. Federico Macheda then curled off target following a clever backheel by the lively Tom Lawrence.

United: Johnstone; Wootton, Thorpe (Grimshaw 70), Vidic (Pearson 62), Vermijl; Valencia, Lawrence (Rothwell 76), Cole, Petrucci, Nani (Bebe 65); Macheda. Subs not used: Gollini, Barmby, Wilson.

Apart from Bryne and Adarabioyo, I think everyone in first team and on the subs are British.

Good sign for English football.
