SAF said that hes unlikely to play him anytime soon to help him settle in at life in Manchester and to understand what it means to play for United (I'd love to see what SAF has in mind in that aspect - a bit like clockwork orange with videos being played of our history while he has his eyes prided open)

That is weird. The likes of Nani and Anderson came over and were able to slot into first team football. I doubt they had a great grasp of the language or living in Manchester or knowing what it was to play for United. Also Bebe had a full preseason behind him in Portugal so its not like he is unfit.

Maybe he's just too raw.

Did Nani and Anderson play right away though? I thought they too were given a few weeks to settle?

True both played a part in our pre-season, but Anderson took a while to get into the English game (i recall a loss in the CC was his first appearance for us and that was in late sept) as for Nani he was brought into the first team early because of the injuries we had to Ronaldo, Rooney and Saha.

Also lets not discount that we got Nani and Anderson as soon as the 06/07 season finished so they had plenty of time to shop for houses/get to know the squad in pre-season... Bebe was only announced 2 weeks ago.

WHEN MANCHESTER United made Bebe the most improbable signing of the summer Alex Ferguson argued there was no risk attached, explaining that “sometimes you just have to go with instinct”. Yet a fortnight on, the striker’s career at Old Trafford has got off to a false start, his performances in training deemed so poor he was not even considered for a reserve fixture last night.

Bebe, signed from the Portuguese club Vitoria de Guimaraes for €7.4 million, was conspicuously absent when United’s second team took on the Elite Squad – Manchester City’s new name for their reserves – in Hyde. This was supposed to be the first chance for Ferguson to see the 20-year-old in match action but the United manager reconsidered after discussion with the reserves’ coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The first disappointment for Bebe may not be entirely unexpected given the strange circumstances of the transfer. After an undistinguished spell at the Portuguese Third Division club Estrala da Amadora he was available on a free transfer seven weeks ago, but United did not sign the player, affiliated to the influential agent Jorge Mendes, until after he had joined Guimaraes, paying the full €9 million buy-out clause.

On top of that, Ferguson subsequently admitted Bebe was the first player he had signed in 24 years as manager at Old Trafford without seeing him play or watching him on video. Instead, the Scot said he had taken the word of scouts as well as Portugal’s manager, Carlos Queiroz, formerly his assistant at Old Trafford. “It was one of those decisions that had to be made quickly, so I made it quickly,” Ferguson said. “I don’t think it’s a risk.”

According to the United manager, Real Madrid and Benfica were also interested in the striker but after the big build-up, the Guardian has established that the first impressions of Bebe have been below expectations. In particular, his touch and control has not been of the standard the club demands – hence his absence from a reserve fixture that saw Anderson make his comeback after six months out with a knee injury. It is understood there have been meetings in which the coaches have expressed misgivings about how long it might be before Bebe can challenge for a first-team place consistently.

The hope at Old Trafford is that he will improve once he is fitter and more confident. Bebe was always identified as a player for the future and Ferguson already has Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen, Javier Hernandez and Federico Macheda in attack.

Ironically, Bebe has been lined up to make his first appearance for his country against England in an Under-21 European Championship qualifier on September 3rd.

At the club for all of 2 weeks now? Am not worried about about him not having made an appearance yet. So the coaches are trying to figure out when he'll be ready - isn't that what is meant by giving him time to settle?

Now if in another month he doesn't at least make an appearance in the reserves, I'll worry a teensy weensy bit.

Reserve league is so inferior to Premiership football I think that the media are within their rights to wonder why, if he's so talented, he didn't get any kind of involvement in last nights game.

The tone of the article is level headed and asks the question without resorting to tabloidesque sensationalism.

The signing stank from the moment it was first announced in my opinion and in my 28 years of following united it ranks up there in the top 3 bizzare signings I've ever seen us make.

You only have to see his youtube reel of 'highlights' to feel like we've been massively had by someone.

Is he still being called a striker then? I thought he was a winger really?

I really don't see anything in his not playing in the reserve match. Why's it such a big deal? Even if there were doubts about his quality, he'd still be given a run-out to see how he fared, wouldn't he? He's obviously just not ready yet for whatever reason.

Fratton Park, play up Pompey!
Didn't Fergie say when we signed him that he'd just be let to have time to settle before he started playing? We have to remember this is a lad that has never been at a club anywhere near this size, doesn't speak the language, and is still probably still trying to get his head around whats happened to him.

Maybe we should give him some time before throwing him on the scrap heap.

If he is being picked for the Portugese under 21's then he can't be that bad.

Shocking journalism as usual, give the guy a chance to settle in at least.

The fact we had so many first teamers in meant we had to prioritise what the game was supposed to achieve.

A very good point, Anderson, Carrick, Cleverly, Macheda all needed run outs as they might be used in the first team in the very near future. Bebe won't.

Official site says that SAF has given Inside United an update on his progress so far. Should be in the next magazine.

However, he is hardly going to say he has been shite!.

After watching the City v Liverpool game the other night and thinking what good a game Adam Johnson was having, it suddenly dawned on me that we have just paid more for Bebe than City did for Johnson.

I have watched a bit of Bebe on YouTube and to be fair, he looks quick and seems to have rough potential. But when looking at Johnson compared to Bebe, makes you realise what a punt Bebe is.

Lets just hope it pays off .... :houllier:

I can't believe that article.

Did they even look at the rest of the line-up last night, or did they just realise that Bebe wasn't in it? Mental. The media in this country is just completely fecked up.

I remember the rags this time last year were saying that Fergie had serious concerns about Nani`s future at the club and would look to offload him in the summer when the right bid came in. He has not turned out to be that bad following the `reports` from the press!

If you read the piece their only source as with the rest of these people claiming such is that Guardian writers hear say evidence

Not sure this has been posted before but has some interesting stuff about why we moved so quickly.

Bebé will go from strength to strength for United, says Sir Alex Feguson

Manchester United's enigmatic new signing Bebé is undergoing a specialised conditioning programme as he is fast-tracked towards first-team action.

The Portuguese forward was left out of a United reserve side last week sparking rumours that the 20 year-old was out of his depth but he has in fact been undergoing specialist work at Old Trafford in an effort to get him game ready. He could play his first game since making his £7.4million move to United from Vitoria Guimaraes on Friday, having been included in the Portugal Under 21 squad for the first time to face England Under 21s at Barcelos in Portugal.

It could prove an intriguing match for United fans, as Bebé may line up against another of Sir Alex Ferguson's surprise signings, the central defender Chris Smalling, signing from Fulham. Ferguson has admitted to never having watched the player, even on DVD, before agreeing to sign him but, despite reports, the United manager has been happy with the player's level of performance since his arrival.

"Ability-wise he's really good, a terrific finisher and we've been very impressed with that," he said.
"It's just the right fitness levels he needs to get to. We have not done any serious work because we're doing some tests on him. There were one or two areas we needed to work on in terms of his fitness, and that's what we're looking at.
"It's combining the physical work he's doing with the sports science people, and the football part."

Bebé can play as a striker or a winger and, while still raw, has pace, power and an improvisational skill that make him a formidable prospect. His heading is underdeveloped for Premier League football but his size, he is 6ft 3in, means he should be able to cope with the physical demands of the league.

That Bebé needs to work on his core fitness is not a surprise, given the speed of his elevation to elite football. Having been playing street football just over a year ago, he has had a remarkable rise to United's Carrington academy – although he had previously represented Portugal at Under 19 level.
Bebé was playing for Estrela Amadora last season, in the Portuguese second division, but moved to Guimaraes as a free agent after breaking his contract with Amadora for their failure to pay his wages.

The player originally signed a contract with Guimaraes that had a €3million release clause but after watching him train and in pre-season friendlies, the club renegotiated with Bebe, raising his wages and having a 9million-euro release clause inserted. A swarm of scouts descended on the Portuguese club's pre-season friendlies as word of mouth spread about Bebe's ability. Guimaraes even tried to offer the player another pay rise, with a €15million release clause when Manchester United made their move, in a deal brokered by Jorge Mendes, the agent of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho.

Several other clubs wanted to sign Bebé, Benfica foremost among them. Real Madrid had had the player watched while several Bundesliga clubs had made their interest known and, acting part on the advice of his former assistant Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson decided to move quickly.

Bebé will go from strength to strength for United, says Sir Alex Feguson - Telegraph
