VAR and Refs | General Discussion

The ref wasn’t that bad today imo. Couple of weird decisions but nothing massive.

Because we got our point thanks to a very soft penalty, the kind that hasn’t been given all season in the Premier League.
The lad moves his arm out towards the ball. That's always a penalty. He didn't even complain that much himself.

The referee made three very suspect decisions. The Dalot free kick for having his shirt pulled. AWB for winning the ball. Maguire for existing at a corner.

You can't rule out match fixing / fixed betting when you see decisions that unusual.

Really? Finally saw a ref give us a penalty today; book a player for diving against us and a penalty ruled by VAR.

The ref made some very confusing calls but it was really didn’t feel like any bias towards us today, just a poor ref that really looked lost and overwhelmed

To me it looks like the movement is him trying to actually move his arm away from the ball. Surely we can agree it wasn’t a stonewaller?

I just mean those three isolated decisions were so unusual that it is suspicious. Match fixing can be based on an individual decision like Dalot foul in second half. It doesn't have to impact the whole game. Also, a team having 'X or more fouls' and bolstering the numbers through such decisions.

Again, he gave three fouls against United without any positive evidence of a foul. He could be grossly incompetent but it could be something else.

I agree it wasn't a stonewall pen but I also say we've lost 5 points recently because of 3 very very soft pens recently. We'd be in CL discussion with those 5 points.

I also think it's important to remember, complaints about qualities of referees aren't just game to game. It's a much bigger picture than what happens in any one match.

Match fixing?
He won't have done very well for whoever he's "fixing" it for giving a harsh pen v Bourno!

Giving clear decisions isn't evidence a referee isn't being biased by the way. Not that I agree with the claim but your argument doesn't work.

The VAR call, that was a clear decision.

The penalty definitely wasn’t - I felt it was a penalty but he could definitely not have given it. Even some on here think it’s soft.

The dive, runs through, initiates contact on our player, falls over. We’ve seen two penalties given against us similar scenarios in the last few games.

Just what we need, a soft penalty that probably wasn't to get the media all fixated on. That will be the last decision we get this season.

Why wasn't their keeper sent off for dissent? Got booked for dissent and continued being absolutely rabid towards the ref.

Because that law is exceptionally rarely applied.
Basically just for Dalot that once.

Good/bad, and there’s been so much bad for us this season, VAR is a joke.

Not sure why VAR seemed so fixated on WHERE that late incident happened and not seemingly looking at whether the Bournemouth player ran into Kambwala.

Im not saying it absolutely wasn’t a foul but they didn’t seem to consider it

Haha that was my take too. All the fuss about in or outside the box. Wasn't even a foul.

The handball is very bizarre, I can’t remember the last time I saw a ball rebound off another player into the arm of another.
It’s a very unlucky scenario for Bournemouth, but he does move his arm towards the ball so it is an infringement and thus a penalty, though somewhat soft.
We had an unlucky penalty against us last week so I’m kind of happy that we got one back.

You dropped this :

The only contentious call was United's penalty.I think it was very harsh but in the middle of the mental decisions that happened this season, it's understandable.

I think the ref in our game today recently saw the Seinfeld episode “The Opposite” and was inspired enough to apply that philosophy to all of his decisions today.

They usually go in stages. Maybe once they determined it was in the box, then they'd determine if it was actually a foul.

The ABU's having a meltdown I see. Oddly didn't have much to say last week...

Paddy Power admin is defintely a dipper. Had to stop following them a while back. Always quick with the childish digs when United get something but say sweet FA when Liverpool get anything

I thought the penalty decision was bonkers, fully expected VAR to get involved. Bizarre

The one yesterday was an obvious, if unfortunate, penalty. When it rebounds, he instinctively moves his arm towards the ball. Once he successfully connects with it, it has to be a penalty.

The cheek of articles like this after us being the victim of three dives leading to penalties in the two games beforehand.
The joy has been sucked out of the game thanks to refs and the media. They'd rather people were outraged every week to keep them engaged in the endless debate about VAR. The actual quality of the football on offer across the league is actually pretty poor, so they need to generate interest somehow.

Bournemouth yesterday were diving all over the place and were genuinely painful to watch, yet we're supposed to feel like they were hard done by. United were poor, but Bournemouth deserved nothing for their lack of sportsmanship. The moment their left back grabbed Dalot's shirt and threw himself to the floor was hilariously bad and the ref still fell for it. There are no gentlemen left in the game these days, which makes it hard to actually root for anyone.

Let's just all enjoy the correct decision we got yesterday because it'll be the last slightly fortuitous call we get all season now, after the narrative that's been built up since.

Just seen Lineker on MoTD saying the decision to overturn Bournemouth's late penalty was not "clear and obvious" for an intervention despite it being an objective decision for things such as ball position, offside, handball by goalscorer, etc. Therefore, clear and obvious error test does not apply.

The average football fan has no hope of understanding the rules when constant misinformation is pumped out by media outlets.

Aaaaand this is why it is easy to not give united pens

This is what I’ve been trying to say for a few seasons now, but it’s especially worse this season. I don’t believe in the conspiracy theories and think all refs have it in against us (some I think hate us, like Oliver).

Every decision that goes our way get scrutinized and criticized by the media. If they’re controversial, but against United, no one cares. It’ll take strong characters for the refs to ignore the noise, which I don’t think any of them are.

Genuinely hilarious seeing the meltdown from the ABU's over this. "tHe rEfS fAvOuR uNiTeD".

Despite the fact 3 penalites were given against United in the previous 2 matches one of which was well over the allotted injury time and drew Chelsea back level before they went on to win the game. :wenger:

(Could you imgaine the faux outrage in the media and Social Media if it had been the other way around)
