As opposed to what?

Top scorer in 2002 WC beating the golden boot number for several WCs prior (and since) including the final goals.
To 1998, obviously. When he won the World Cup's Golden Ball?

His final performance (or rather the lack of it) makes this a choice.

He was more dangerous in 1998 imo. But still hell of a player in 02.

I did consider 1998 but felt 2002 gives more flexibility in terms of the draft and players I feel will be available.

Maybe (not for me). Less goals, didn't push team to a winners spot, didn't play final. 98 was a great season in Italy but would still say 2002 edges it given this is about WC. Sure if Indy had chosen 98, match comments would be "he didn't play final", "only got a few goals", etc? :)

Maybe choosing 2002 leaves 98 free for loads of other players too?

Its tricky because in the 1998 era he was that force of nature, but since we are judging on WC performances only, his weird 1998 final is possibly more of a negative whereas in 2002 he was at his best throughout the tournament.

This is going much slower than I expected. I need to go for a run — can I leave my pick with you, @Cal?

In terms of the drafting world, Ronaldo is amongst the few players that is universally backed to score a goal against any defense.

Second highest World Cup goal scorer of all time. 8 goals in 2002 World Cup.. Pretty easy pick really.. Plus I can put him in any formation and he’ll work unlike some others

Well... we'll see how that works out, I'd say that with 2002 being a notoriously poor WC, perhaps getting one of the top players in that tournament is a good idea.

Individually Ronaldo of 98' is a level above Ronaldo of 02' if you take into consideration his overall game. Apart from the final on the road to it he was still the same phenomenon who terrorized Italian defences that year.

Ronaldo of 02' was a great goalscorer but not the same at his peak. A bit like Cristiano now and couple of years ago.
Maybe. Guess it's whether people weigh their view of performance on play or end result/impact in key games. For me, great play has got to go somewhere.

98 was a great club season and he still looked the player in some of the WC games but in 2002, he scored in almost every game? Added a (regular) end product, maybe some maturity to his game?

(imo :))

I think we should probably left this for the match thread - especially since he's still free to choose the other version later

@crappycraperson can you clarify this rule? If for example I feel a good chance to get a 1994 Pick, can I swap Ronaldo 2002 to Ronaldo 1998 without it counting as break?

How much clearer it can be? You can't swap Ronaldo 2002 to Ronaldo 1998 but you can use Ronaldo's 1998 version in the game
- Even if one picks Player A for a particular year during picking round, the pick year can be changed subsequently at any time during the draft as long as the restriction rules around playing 11 are followed.

Edgar and harms already answered. For drafting you can't change it. But during any match up you can field Ronaldo 1998 instead of 2002 as long as other rules are followed.

Always going to be the way with everyone deciding where to start. Subsequent rounds should fly though with each manager only having 1 WC to choose from (barring breaks)

I’m glad he lasted as I haven’t had the chance to pick him before. He was insanely amazing at the 74 WC and as he didn’t win it I don’t lose one of my criteria restrictions.
It's incredible that he lasted to you. In my book his performance in 1974 is in an all-time World Cup top-3, excluding 1950 and earlier.

@crappycraperson it's good that you don't hear what I'm saying about you right now. Cheated to get him ahead of me as well, "Mr. Randomiser".
Feck. Wanted him from the very beginning and hoped to build a team around him, as I'm so often criticising teams with Garrincha in them.
