If sir Jim is waiting to see if ucl is mathematically impossible before sacking ten hag then he is no better than the glazers, I was hoping he would be ruthless like Chelsea under ambramovic or like real madrid when it comes to tolerating mediocre performances.

3 at the back can be a very good system when done right.

Cont'e Juve, Chelsea (1st season) and Inter sides were all good to watch.

Inzaghi's Inter aren't defensive. They play some very good football. He often plays with a midfield three of Mkhirtaryan, Calhanoglu and Barella. No natural DM there. It somehow works.

Alonso has Leverkusen playing some very intrictate stuff with a three at the back system. Grimaldo and Frimpong are outstanding wing backs.

Amorim would be my #1 choice to replace ten Hag.
Yep, dont disagree with any of that....Hence the 'personal preference' part of the post, not saying i am right or wrong, i just dont like formations with 3 center backs

If he was relieved , Anchelloti would be my pick.

Experienced, worked at Everton so has worked in a dysfunctional club trying to build something.

Also , he’d get a bit more time with fans and players , particularly the 10 second attention twitter crowd who are absolutely certain on things they can’t be certain on.

I also think he’d get our XG against down , which we all know is now the single most important metric in judging a manager.

Ah but wait, if he doesn’t start well “he is passed it” will be used against him. Didn’t save Jose , so maybe forget it. Who is popular this week? De Zebra or that German lad managing Germany! I’m sure fans will have far more patience with them if we don’t hit the ground running and sort out this XG issue.

I have a soft spot for Potter, I think with the right people above him then he could become a great manager.

I know the wheels came off at Chelsea, but I thought at the time he got sacked Chelsea were actually playing some decent football but not putting their chances away.

This is where I hope Ratcliffe and Co improve United by getting the right structure in place and have people that will not tolerate player power and will be ruthless with players who think they are above the manager.

I can't warm up to Potter at all.

Especially because I thought one of our best performances last season came vs Potter's Chelsea. It was one of the few times we controlled the ball + field well(more possession and field tilt in our favor considerably especially in the 1st half).

I think he's probably on Ten Hag and Poch's level. And that's not good enough. We need better.

I would think he's waiting for the director of football to be brought in before deciding on anything with the manager. Which does make sense.

Sir Jim influences but does not make decisions on appointments, the DOF, CEO etc will.

There is some saving face here also by allowing ETH to sack himself.
Not only that, its probably cheaper to remove him from post once he enters his last 12 months in June.

He will be gone and we will likely have a replacement ready to go.

We also had our best performance under Ten Hag against Conte’s Spurs. Does that mean you can’t bring yourself to rate Conte’s quality as a manager?

In the current situation Potter would fail. We currently ask too much out of the manager and he's supported by incompetent people who bid 80m for a winger whose worth 30m and would leave the club for 40m. In the right setup then Potter might do the trick. For sure this is a long term project with loads of changes in the horizon. The manager needs to be on the same page with upper management and viceversa. The last thing United needs is a manager who discriminates against players he didn't want to bring at the club in the first place or run his team to the ground when he knows very well that half of the squad aren't physically capable of taking such 'Spartan' like training.

I think Conte was top quality, but I also think his best is behind him and wouldn't want him at United.

I dont know much about Potter and this might be unfair, but all I see is Alan Pardew 2.0. I actually dont know why I think that. Could be the way English media always over blow english players/managers..

Asides from anything, I would worry that fans would struggle to give him time.

For all the talk of "if we played nice football or had more possession we wouldnt care about results", I think thats bollox talk. I think we need to listen to INEOs. We have been groomed to think get top 4 is imperative, because thats all the Glazers cared about. Thats a low bar.

Its not that its impossible for United to be competitive at the top end of things and do a rebuild, but it is going to take time for INEOs to undo all the damage the dysfunctional Glazer tenure has caused. That includes trying to offload high paid players who have probably little resale value and not many suitors.

The addition 3 or 4 quality players in each of the next 2 or 3 seasons whilst gradually shipping out deadwood as well as fixing the wage bill? Sure.

But this notion that everyone is bad other than Mainoo/Hojlund/Garnacho is just very far from reality. We don't need to, and can't sign 10 players whilst selling 10 in the same window. Becoming like Chelsea would be one of the risks as well.
It isn't far from reality at all. I'd keep a combination of Onana, Shaw, Martinez, Dalot, Mainoo, Garnacho and Højlund as either depth options or starters. I suppose you have to give Mount another year too, unfortunately. Bayindir can stay as backup as long as he's happy to, which would go against recent reports.

Make no mistake though, other than them, everyone else must go either now or later. Sooner the better.

It's gone under the radar, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe told the Daily Telegraph in 2018, long before he bid for Chelsea or United, that the manager he loves is Diego Simeone.

It's generally accepted that Simeone would be unattainable given the control, pay and power he's been given by Atletico. But I wouldn't be surprised if United at least make the enquiry.

He also stresses the importance of Managers being motivators in that interview and criticises Mourinho's management of Luke Shaw. I don't think Ten Hag is a born motivator

Carlo Ancelotti walked out on Everton after 18 months to take an easier job, he's 65 now so I can't see him taking the Man United job at this point in his life.

Simeone doesn't speak English though?

I've always thought that Atletico Madrid is the perfect club for him. I'm not sure his style of football would go down well at most other top clubs.

Not only are there zero 'credible' links to Potter, there are zero 'credible' links to dismissing the rumour.

In fact, there are zero 'credible' links with anyone replacing ten Hag, or, indeed, his post being threatened.

It's all speculation.
Indeed, this is true.

I suppose I just think, depending on how INEOs are gonna do things, it could be a very odd couple of years transition and having a big name manager , even an older one, may actually suit and we can bring in our proper replacement when the club has had time to properly set things up.

The language barrier is easily worked around with a bilingual assistant manager until he gets comfortable with the language

The football he plays not transferring to other clubs is a fair point. Could be right. And I don't think it'll be him anyway. It's just interesting to note that it's who Ratcliffe likes as a manager. He's almost the polar opposite to Ten Hag.

Who the new manager is doesn’t worry me, it’s if the new manager gives the players some time to prove themselves is my issue.

There is a financial aspect to this. If we don't care to get an interim, then there's really no point in sacking him early, having to pay more and then fund an interim.

Let him see out the season, it is sad, but the best option at this point.

Agreed. Also remember Jim needs the Glazer sign off, the leaches are still there

I think I'm properly done with ETH now. The players cannot be dissolved of blame because a lot of them have shirked responsibility and put in too many bad performances. Injuries sure haven't helped either. But ETH's persistence in making us a counter-attacking team incapable of counter-attacking effectively, and telling us we're making progress this year, and preaching about how great our performances are... all of this is just BS and he's not cut out for the job.

Tuchel or Nagelsmann stick out. Don't know enough about Inzaghi or Amorim but they should be considered.

The 1-1 draw against Chelsea? He wasn't their manager when we beat them.

I don't think that's what they will be waiting for - even if they have already decided to sack him, it is unlikely that any of their candidates to replace him are available until the summer. Removing Ten Hag now would just mean appointing Steve McClaren as manager for the remainder of the season - it is difficult to see any upside in that scenario. Ten Hag will therefore see out the season (before being replaced in the summer).

The managers influence and responsibility should be reduced.

No manager is going to come into a club the size of United and excel, if they are dealing with off-field problems constantly, whilst also trying to get a free flowing possession team together with Maguire, Bruno, Rashy and McTom.

We need to see what the likes of Berrada and Ashworth do in the summer. If they have a clear plan and the transfers demonstrate that plan, then I will back any manager they wish to employ.

Simeone would be run out of town even with good results.

He'd win the league and half the caf would be miserable

After what we saw yesterday, people wanting Simeone are bizarre. Yes it would be a million times better delivered, but I don't want to watch sit back football anymore. I think he'd probably do very well here, but it's just not what I want to watch. Can beggars be choosers though?

We're getting closer to breaking point and the options are still massively underwhelming. Our timing is just always shite.
Ten Hag was a most exciting option 2 years ago, and he turned out as the worst manager of the past decade.

And I personally find the likes of Nagelsmann, Flick, Enrique, and Inzaghi to be pretty interesting.

Difficult to know, really. United, Liverpool, Bayern, Barcelona and Chelsea are all likely to be scrambling around this summer with nearly identical managerial shortlists. We need to get in there early and secure our preferred option (which, historically, United have been abysmal at, but hopefully things will change under new leadership from Ineos).

Genrally I am no longer sure ETH is the right one for United.

My problem is I do not see any good choices that I would feel confident would come in and do a great job.

- Tuchel, Mourinho and Conte are 1-2 season coaches that leaves the clubs in worse condition than when the came.
- Potter and De Zerbi have not shown anything that gives me confidence they can build a team. On the contrary they seem to get worse.
- Zidane, Klopp & Ancelotti are never coming to United.
- Nagelsmann might be interesting but wont be available until late in the transfer window meaning another year lost.
- Inzaghi and Amorim seems talented but I am afraid the United job is still way above their current ability
- Alonso is interesting but still new in the coaching game and would choose Liverpool or Bayern over United

And to top it off better teams are also looking for a new manager.

Simeone isn't what he used to be or at least judging based on his atletico this season, but if we're going to resort to parking the bus against the big guns I rather we do it in a manner that actually has us having a resemblance of control over the flow of the game, peak atletico while obviously sitting back never seemed desperate, merely biding their time and super organized the opposite of what we were yesterday.

In fairness to Potter he only ever improved Brighton from Relegation candidates to European hopefuls, certainly didn't take them backwards. They also played some of the best football in the league, creating chances for Fun, they lacked a top quality Goalscorer. There is only so much you can do as manager sometimes.

They were 4th when he left for Chelsea granted it was early season but they were looking very good. His time at Chelsea is pretty hard to judge really, wasn't there very long and it was a mess, and noone has done any better since either. He failed ultimately but it would judge on how he improved Brighton and the quality of football they were playing, then a doomed short spell at a turbulent Chelsea.
