Willian - worth a punt?

It's not a simple at "Chelsea don't want him". It's club policy at Chelsea not to offer players over a certain age more than a 1 year contract. Willian wants a longer contract than that.
This. Chelsea have been - admirably - consistent in offering contracts to players 30+ even when they have more than a playing year left in them. Be it Terry or Lampard.

It is not that Willian has lost his talent so significantly that he won't be useful to the team. I am pretty sure from his own experience Lampard would value experienced players (that too PL experienced) around the team when rebuilding a new team.

RW has been an issue for some time. If the obsession with Sancho [someone we all want] has seen us not look for other RW options, meaning we end up with William then it’s a huge backwards step.

If we’re not certain on Sancho we should be advancing with other options surely, the Sancho Alternative thread talks up better options - surely our scouts can do better.

He was allowed to leave midway through the season for little fee so clearly we weren't exactly bothered by his departure, we could have easily refused the sell him if Ole wasn't sure about Williams and Shaw.

We could have, it would have been a dick move for a squad player who has given us a decade of loyal service though. Fact remains Young left earlier than Solksjear would have ideally liked him to go.

Only way I would take Willian is as a squad player who can come on when Sancho needs a rest, definitely not as opposed to him in a million years

I’d be happy if Willian was brought in as back up to Sancho and we signed both whilst loaning Chong out and moving Lingard or/and Pereira on but I wouldn’t be happy at all if we only brought Willian in as he isn’t good enough to get us to where we’re trying to get too nor does he fit the profile of player we go for under Ole.

He's a seasoned player and a title winner, his professionalism is highly rated by all the manager's he's worked for. His effort on the pitch is there for all to see and you can extrapolate from there that he's more likely to be a positive influence on the team than a negative/idle one.

No he didn't - Young wanted out when Inter came calling and left midway through the season. Why do you keep ignoring this?

Yeah, Ole signed off on that one.

So being a good pro and playing well as a squad player does matter. Make up your mind.

You literally are. Your initial point came out from Wilian being old and therefore useless. It's as binary as it gets.

Hilarious - I literally pointed to professionalism, work ethic, title winning experience and you go back to your binary mode to try and suggest my sole point is "old = leadership". And then you have the cheek to talk to me about logical thinking. Your entire argument is based on black or white garbage.

"Chelsea don't want him, why should we take him" - It wouldn't be the first mistake Chelsea made with letting go of a player, so not impossible to think Wilian can be a good free transfer for any club to be honest.
"Ole got rid of Young" - I mean soon enough he would have but its obvious Young asked to leave at a time Ole didn't want him to go so your argument collapses there.
"Look at the players Ole wants to bring in" - *see's the Jones example " - "That's a calamity" (!?)
"Matic played himself into form and is a good pro". And you think Wilian isn't a potential good squad option or a good pro? What's this based on?

Curious to know how many Chelsea games you watch to be honest -whilst Wilian is not a player for week in week out, he's consistently a dependable player for a decent performance. And all big clubs need those squad options. Chelsea can let go of him, that doesn't mean he won't be missed if unreplaced, or that he wont go on to add value at another club in a bit/part role.

Just a small thing here - he and Conte hated each other, to the point where Willian childishly hid Conte with trophy emojis in an instagram post celebrating the FA Cup in 17-18. Word is that he, Diego Costa, & David Luiz had formed an intransigent Brazilian clique that stood in open defiance of Conte and part of Conte's issues with Chelsea's board was that the club was unwilling to cut ties with all three after the title season.

Obviously Conte isn't the easiest manager to get on with but I just wanted to point out that it's not as if Willian has gotten on with everyone.

Yeah good point, but Conte is a cnut as you've eluded to in your own words.

Sancho needs a rest? He's not our player or hadn't you heard?

To some extent I agree but also I would side with Antonio in the matter of him vs. the Brazilian players. Willian was salty about losing his place to Pedro and Costa & Luiz were openly rebellious.

Think its more behind the scenes than that. Conte had some favourites which may have baffled the players. He's not foreign to alienating players who otherwise had no problems, a bit like Jose.

No point in giving him a 3-year contract right now. He might become another Sanchez who's happy to earn the cash while he can. Just don't see him as the super-motivated lift the team spirits type of guy.

If we were to sign him just to add depth then I might be ok with it AFTER we signed a starting left winger. But do we really need more players who aren't good enough for the starting 11?
Do you mean right?

If I'm taking a punt on someone it'd be a very talented young player. Ole's done a great job of reshaping the squad, long may it continue

Which is why I would trust him if we signed Willian. But Sancho please!

Was Willians professionalism praised when he photoshopped Conte out of the title winning picture? Or When he and the whole of the Chelsea squad, downed tools under Mourinho's last reign?

I simply dont think Willian is worth considering as an option.

Whether you agree or not, thats your issue. Nitpicking at my posts isn't going to convince me otherwise.

Willian isnt good enough. Simple as that

Yes, i'm aware of that. I've got drawn into a stupid and rather pointless debate.

My overall point is - Willian isn't good enough for us and not the profile of signing Ole is after.

So Willian is a no from me. Chelsea are upgrading, so we shouldnt settle for what they have no use for. We're a better club than them and should aim higher. Simple really

And yet Matic was massively professional when he would speak against Ole when he was dropped. "downed tools under Mourinho's reign" - what sort of rubbish is that? Jose loved him and tried to bring him to United while he was with us. You're just changing history now.

Sure - you're entitled to your opinion.

This is the best player on a free that can improve our squad depth. Why are we letting him go to Arsenal when he is a natural right winger that we have been screaming for? We are always so slow in regards to squad building.

Wonder what his wage demands are?

Very high and he won't accept less than a 3 year deal. Turns 32 next week. There's a reason we're letting him go.

He'd be a decent option off the bench but definitely isn't the type of player that we should be looking at improving us because he wouldn't. He could add something though if we were looking at rotating/resting key players. He is better than some of the options we currently have in that role.

Always thought he was a bit underrated but still it's a strange one, esp since Arsenal are going to use him as a starter. Their fans are not exactly over the moon either, they prefer Zaha for their front three.

I doubt he’d want to move north anyway.

Been very good this season but you have to question whether that form is in relation to trying to earn a new contract or not? Feels like it would be a blow to Chelsea to loose him but maybe not to the extent where they're committing to paying him until he's 35
