Zion Suzuki - Goalkeeper

See hundres of posts on this forum crticising our ability to sign promisin gyoung players the right age (not youth players) before much smaller clubs then paying a fortune for them a couple of years later.....so here we are linked with a player fits the profile and understandably nearly everyone (including me) has never heard of him.

So what do the vast majorty of people do.....moan about us being linked wth an unkknown player or relatively inexperienced one. Have seen it with Caicedo when he was lnked, Camavinga and a few others. Enzo Fernandez was about the only one saw positive posts flooding the thread and that was only after hs successful world cup.

Like I said, dont know Suzuki so cant really say if he has any good. I have just watched a youtube video of him, but I regard that as a taster and about as relevant and defining as people using stats to justify a players performance and ability, neither are defining and can just be used to show the best or worst of a player.

But he is very much the profle of player we should be going for this summer as a number two in my opnion. Lets not forget we will be signing a new number one, there is absolutely no guarantee they will succeed here, there have been a few periods between GK greats here where we have struggled to replace, DeGea was one of the lucky ones that came soon after VDS and he took a season or so to settle in. So an experienced decent keeper snt for me the right option. A promising second keeper signed long term is a good option as he could be someone to compete for the jersey if the likely Onanna deal doesnt go so well.

From the video, he certainly seemto have a good range of passing and also a hint of Chmeichel in hs ability throwing the ball out from his area long to start atacks. Saving wise hard to gain anythiing as most of the saves shown were decent but ones that should be made, only a couple of top saves.

But certainly all for this type of saving, a budget promising young keeper as a second choice wth possible great potential that looks to ft the modern philosophy and may ell have the opportunity quite early to comepete as a starter

Why do we need another unknown young goalkeeper when we are already stocked in those? Kovar, Vitek, Bishop to name a few - we need to at least sell those if a new young one is purchased

It looks like this guy has good ball playing skills and that is what Erik wants so he will deputise for Onana without affecting the playing style of the team.
That is the way I see it anyway.

Maybe they aren’t good with the ball at their feet? Old GK as we know it is dead. It’s all about the ability to play like a midfielder and GK these days if you want to make it at a big club.

Because he could be better than all of those listed, or he plays in a way which suits the manager better.

It’s like saying why sign Martinez when we have Lindelof and Maguire at centreback.

Ok, but why don’t we try to sell any other young goalkeepers we already have? Even if Henderson goes, after arrival of Onana and Suzuki we will have at least 6 GKs in total

Why would you sell them now? They are gaining good experience and getting better, they are still all young, they might become good enough for the first team or we could get a better fee further down the line.

Yeah, because obviously they are all the same, based on the fact they're all unknown.

Been a huge fan of his for about 10 years now.

Love that he has hands, and that he puts gloves on them.

How can you be a fan of a 10 year old? Daddy is that you?

EDIT: I replied before reading the sarcastic 2nd line haha

What's this guy like in terms of distribution, command and handling just out of interest

I can answer that based on one 30 second clip I saw on twitter.

He seems to be very good with his feet similar to Onana and can't say any more

Vitek is still too young.
Kovar - not sure if passing and distribution counts as a strength of his but he’s very two footed if I recall. Possibly can be worked on, still young.
Bishop - I’ve no idea what sort of a goalie he is.

Makes sense to bring someone like Suzuki in as back up.

Strangest player at the club. Guy barely plays. Be it first team or U21's.

I'm pretty sure he was brought in as a training partner. Like they have with the reserves team - Huddlestone and McShane were essentially the same.

But they were mid 30's. Finished as players. He's 23. 20 when we signed him. Odd age to be a training partner.

Surely he’s way too young to be our back-up goalie when he should be playing regularly and not sit on the bench for 90% of our games.

Bishop's been linked with a move to Sunderland.

Onana, Kovar, Zion and probably Heaton as the experienced training partner for the first team, taking the Grant role.

Not a bad setup to have.

Yeah, it's a funny one with understudy keepers. 3rd choice ones are often young kids or old ones at the end of their careers - both of which aren't expected to feature much so they're fine.

But understudy keepers might be called on for a lengthy run should the first choice pick up an injury. Yet if they're that good that they could get regular PL games elsewhere then it becomes an issue (Dean Henderson). And if they're talented youngsters, would they benefit more by being on loan as regulars rather than possibly (if all goes to plan) rarely featuring as the understudy?

If we are going for a talented but relatively inexperienced youngster as understudy, then Matej Kovar looks a good prospect as well and had a good loan last year with the Czech winners. I think Kovar would probably benefit more from another loan elsewhere as #1, but, as you say, you'd think the same would apply to the equally as young and inexperienced Suzuki.

One deal at a time FC
Embarassing carry on trying to sign 2/3 at a time while waiting to get players in before we remove some of the unwanted that have been told they’re been sold but to be patient .

How is a US/Japanese 20 year old who has just a handful of appearances in the J League, with no senior international appearances, qualifying for a work permit?

This would never fly on FM

Strange situation we’re in with the keepers this summer as all four at the club currently, Henderson, Heaton, Bishop and Kovar might well want to head off to play rather than act as reserve.

Certainly the first two do (Heaton apparently requested we let him join Luton) and the latter two are at the age where it seems likely.

Haven't the rules changed a little from this summer, so that PL and Championship clubs can have up to 4 players that don't actually qualify on the traditional work permit rulings?

I assume it's in response to the long term issue regarding UK clubs missing out on talented young players, especially from the likes of South America, now being added to with Brexit creating a similar issue even for European players.

Yeah it's a promlem with young promising keepers. If they are really promising they need to play regularly, and if they are not all that than they should'nt be counted on when your regular GK isn't available. Romero was actually really rare in that sense. Very good when called upon and yet he accepted his role as second choice for years. I'm surprised that GK loans with an immediate recall options aren't more common. I mean yeah it can turn out very problematic for teams but it's quite rare that keepers get injured and most often than not the loaning teams get a great keeper for the whole season.

Every time I see this guy mentioned I can't get the old Fall song "I am Damo Suzuki" out of my head. Now I am trying to figure out if it can be reworked into a chant.
Song I had never heard before, thank you!

I once got a shout to do a gig with Damo Suzuki in my city in Ireland. I’d never heard of him or Can at that point. I thought he was going to be at least half Irish with a name like Damo  The message was something like Damo Suzuki needs a pickup band for tonight would you play guitar? I was like sure what’s the Craic with it? It’s just a jam and see what happens. Free/noise/art thing? Sounded like something I’d never done and then I embarrassingly kept calling him Damo as in Damien all night until the gig was over  One of his fans pulled me aside horrified to tell me that I was pronouncing his name totally wrong. I’ve since gotten into Can and I grabbed a few signed solo albums off him that night. We got on well. Nice fella! That’s my Damo Suzuki story:)
