James Milner is top 4 material.

I still don't think he's near Top 4 material mind, but there you go.

Very good game yesterday though, and could have had more goals/assists.

Decent player. never top 4 material though. would have been my MOTM yesterday tbh. fantastic performance. He was at his best, sadly, it was against us and suddenly he's good enough to start week in week out for teams with title ambitions. :nono:

If he played like that every week he'd be good enough to start for England/top sides week in week out. It was just a great one off performance, he's usually not very good for City or for England. But you can give him credit for one game where he was the real danger man without thinking he's amazing

I thought he was good for City last week against Villa as well. Scored a goal with a great strike to finish off an attack he started himself with a Scholes-esque pass.

I never rated him when he passed through our graveyard of young players and was delighted to get £12 million for him. Infact, I still don't think he's that good despite apparently doubling that value since then.

Had a very good game yesterday and infact has had a number of good games recently but I just don't think he's anything special. Hard worker, solid passer, average technique...compliments the flair of the other City players well but looks rubbish in an England shirt.

Will probably take Barry's place in the middle in time. Well, that is unless they replace them both.

Well he had a bad game today. Against one of the so called "top four" teams. I'm guessing if Mourinho joins, Milner will be getting the axe.

I'm so glad United never went for him, at least with any larger bids. He reminds me of a slightly better version of Alan Smith, but with fewer goals (logically, since he isn't a striker).

He's a decent player who can play a variety of positions and always put in a good shift. He's nothing out of the ordinary though and was certainly overpriced.

He was good for them in the first half of the season. Still can be a useful player for them. And in all honesty his contribution to City is similar to that of Young's to us so far. Both need to make a step up and possibly another after that.

He's a good utility player at best.

Exactly.

Ability wise Young is a level above Milner.

His only good game this season was against us, right?

He is a quite a good squad player and occasionally he puts in very good shifts.

I thought he started the season well

No, I think he is a worthy squad player for a top 4 side.

Not disimilar to Fletcher but has yet to reach his heights when he was at his best.

Difficult to make any decent contribution with not having a regular place. He's a valuable squad player.

He's their version of Park. Technical ability wise, there's nothing good about to write home about, but he compensates it with a good footballing brain and great work-rate. He ran us ragged in the first game when our shape was all over the place and we couldn't deal with him and Silva's intelligent runs. Once his team goes under couch and they need someone to take charge, his ability as a footballer will exposed.

I've always liked Milner and would have him at United. I just don't think you see the best of him when you restrict him to a position in a midfield 2 or on the wing. To see his full potential I think he has to play in an attacking role with a bit more licence to roam. Then he can show his creativity and get into goalscoring positions more frequently.

True, but the problem is that he'll never be top quality in that role and would never be given it, on a regular basis at a top team. I like him as well as he is a good player and has an excellent attitude. I'd take him too, but not for the money they paid as for me he's not good enough to be part of the first 11 for a top 4 team. Super squad player though.

I cannot fecking believe they give him playing time when you have Johnson (who despite being really inconsistent is twice the player) or even Pizzaro in midfield.
Milner was another overrated and overpriced english signing.

That's fair. I guess for players of his ilk it's a decision between being the fulcrum of a side at a middle range club and showing your full ability or settling for a lesser role at a top club where you have greater chance of success.

Another example being Charlie Adam. He had the team built around him at Blackpool and shone but he was never going to be good enough to be afforded that luxury at Liverpool with any great success.

That's one game in fairness.....
So is the one Guy Incognito pointed out....

He's out of his depth unless of course we mean to see him as a squad player and I suppose he could do a role then.
He isn't out of his depth at all. He has had a good season for City and up until recently they were doing very well in the league. He is there version of Park. An excellent squad player to have.

He's a decent squad player who can slot in for City when needed. Shouldn't really be starting for them when everyone is fit though.

James Milner is not top 4 material... James Milner is an awful awful footballer, who is not good at any one thing bar working hard... plus he doesn't even have the saving grace of having decent hair.

Discuss.

He's developed into a very good footballer who is the best option England have.

He was a regular for a club winning the Premier League - and for his country reaching the quarter finals in the Euros

clearly...he IS top-4 material

If you are gonna have Balotelli, Aguero and Silva - you also need some Milners, Barry's and Toure's to balance it out

Well, I'd say Toure is the sort of player that can carry the water for an attacker like Aguero and still contribute heavily to attack, thus the great value of such a box to box midfielder.

But you do need one of your front 6 to be defensive minded, imo, though I don't think Milner is a very good defensive midfielder. He's Hargreaves lite.

He started 17 games... I'd hardly call that regular.

Apart from the fact he hasnt and that isnt including the two better options on the bench? AND the fact that both Rooney and Welbeck, and even Sturridge can play the wide position better than he can.

England's weak link at the moment
