It's dark but it doesn't really feel dark most of the time. And there's the odd almost funny moment thrown in. Makes it easy going watching whilst being quite deep at the same time.
The reason I watch it is because its a fun TV show to watch. Never a dull moment, great storytelling and it's incredibly well made. It's the type of TV show I would happily spend an entire week inside a cinema watching. Who cares how seriously a TV show takes it self if it is a good show?
I fecking love BB, but even I realize it's no way near the GOAT debate. Mad Men is the only thing currently airing that can put itself in that, and even then, it's probably a bit off the top top dogs of TV really.
I don't think I'll ever in my lifetime see a show that matches The Wire, but Breaking Bad isn't exactly "far off", it'll certainly go down as one of the greatest if they manage to deliver a great final eight episodes.
In IMDB it is the third most rated TV Show (after The Wire and Game of Thrones). Also I think that is rated high everywhere so I don't think that is that far of.
You can only rate a TV show by how much you personally like, and for those who this it's the best, it is the best. There's not really much to it and people calling it the greatest of all time doesn't really mean much. There are people for whom things like eastenders is the best TV show of all time, which most of us will find laughable but so what? It's their GOAT. There's no such thing as a definitive GOAT in things as subjective as TV shows.

I can put Breaking Bad at any time but have to be in the right frame of mind to watch something like The Wire.

Yeah, I sort of discount Wire in all these best show of all time debates. Only Deadwood for me compares to Wire but given it was unfinished, it falls short as well.
Removing Wire, I don't think it is outlandish to talk about BB as one of the best dramas ever IF they successfully stick the landing in coming 8 episodes.. I am a big MM fan as well but I think BB is better. For the genre BB represents, it can not get any better.
So the second half of this series next year, is it the show finale?

Well it's the end of the series itself yeah but apparently they're making a film trilogy to finish it off, word is that Nic Cage will play the bad guy in it, and Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will be replaced by Gerard Butler and Shia le Bouef. Can't wait.

I don't get the Mad Men hype either, been watching quite a few episodes and it hasn't come anywhere close to drawing me in. Only reason I persisted was Christina Hendricks.
I've seen all of the Sopranos and to date, I've seen all of Breaking Bad.
I will reserve final judgement on the big three until I complete the Wire and Breaking bad.
As it stands depending on Breaking Bad's finale, it will at least match the Soprano's.

I'm feeling the same about The Wire.
Never seen it before but everyone on here raves about it like it's the best show ever. The first two episodes have been pretty decent but nothing so special I want to stay up till stupid o'clock marathoning it like I did with Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones.
You need to persevere with the wire, its takes a while to get going, especially since there are a wide array of characters. Once you get a bit familiar with them, you'll start getting into the show and soon enough you will love it, I can guarantee you that!! So stick with it

I don't find drama all that subjective(comedy, yeah sure, a bit more subjective)....YOUR favourite and the actual best are two different things. For instance, I don't consider some of my favourites the best in their field. I prefer BB to MM, but it's not a better show.

Echoing what Poisson said, I can't stress how persistent you need to be with it. Its a slow-burner and I'm usually very impatient when it comes to TV shows but it eventually got to a point where I blitzed an entire season in about a day and a half.
I got hooked on The Wire from S01E01, but I can understand people taking a while to get fully addicted, rest assured once it clicks you'll not look back.
I was addicted to the first series but didn't really get into the second one.

I think the problem was that in the first episode the only thing of note that really happened was the court case and they never established any reason why we should give a shit before it. The choice works out once you get to know the characters, but it made the first episode hard work IMO.
Man Men is the dullest program that has ever been recommended to me. It seems to have no point other than to say that men and society used to be more sexist.

I just accept some people will like a show more than others. Based partly on things written on this thread, I've been watching the Sopranos for the last three months. I'm into season six now and while I think it's good, at times very good, I don't feel it's as brilliant as some say, but I just accept that some people like the more consistent tone and pace the Sopranos had while others would happily take the sometimes fast and furious and sometimes slow pace of Breaking Bad. I've never been more tense watching TV than I was in the last two episodes of season four of BB.
Regarding The Sopranos you've hit the nail on the head for me. I'm 6 episodes from the end of The Sopranos. Half way through season 5 I took a month long break and watched the whole of The Wire. I've had a running debate with my sister over the relative merits of BB and The Sopranos, she has only seen a few episodes of BB. She maintains that The Sopranos is the finest TV show ever, and I just don't get it. It's very good, very very good but I just don't think it's as good as everyone makes out. The Wire is far better, but for me BB tops them both. It's the most gripping, best paced show I've seen in a very long time.

I tried again and I was still bored shitless. What is interesting about it? I'm genuinely interested because I can't see anything and it amazes me that people keep listing it up with shows like Breaking Bad.
The thing with mad men is, I get that the acting is damn good and I get that the setting is very good to look at and is interesting but then you realize that it has feck all story really and there is no real meat to it.
I'm currently on S04EP03 on Breaking Bad, Adzzz. Out of curiosity, have I already seen this particular scene or is it still to come?
