Television How I Met Your Mother

She went from being one of the best to worst.

When was Robin the best or one of the best characters on TV? :wenger:

I was very bored by the two parter, ending was very predictable and not much funny about it. The first half with the pit and Silence of the Lambs references was very poor. Second part, I just didn't care as I feel no sympathy towards Ted and Robin and they were central in it.

Actually I meant just for this show. I have finally stopped watching now thankfully.

The second part of that double episode was really good. Other than the supremely annoying Lily and Marshal parts.

What are you on about that? That's whats wrong with this show, things like that aren't funny. It's no longer a good sitcom and it's never been a good drama.

Eh? No part of that was funny, none of it was meant to be. Parts of this show (and Scrubs) aren't funny. Sitcoms can have other dimensions as well you know. Scrubs was brilliant at turning humour into drama. Dr Cox losing his patients was about as sad as a sitcom gets. Marshall's dad dying was very similar. Sitcoms don't always have to be laugh-out-loud funny. They can be quite moving at times.
Actually didn't see the Barney twist coming which is ridiculously stupid of me. Enjoyable episode nonetheless. Hopefully they end the series this year. Reaching a point where you think Ted should just get a mail order bride.

I totally agree. However, I'm not moved one bit by How I met your mother, I wasn't by Marshall's dad's death episode and I haven't been by any of the recent situations. I think the acting is pretty atrocious for the most part, in the sense that Robin and Ted can't act (they're seriously awful at the drama parts), the guy playing Barney isn't that bad but the writing is all over the place with his character, and Marshall and Lily have just gotten boring and caricatural. I'm never engaged emotionally and just spend most of my time sighing and hoping for the final episode, cos I've watched too much to give up now, with the occasional laugh or smile in the middle.

Sitcoms should predominantly be about about comedy, this show hasn't been funny for quite a while now (bar one or two little moments per episode) and their attempts at drama are pretty awful. And the character development is incredibly incoherent. I wouldn't care if it went from being a decent comedy to being a decent drama but it's gone from being a decent comedy to be being one of the worst dramas on TV at the moment.

Scrubs at least tired to remain funny throughout it's run... it always attempted to make comedy just as bigger part of the show as the drama, to varying degrees of success of course (though the quality of Scrubs never dropped as heavily as HIMYM has in my opinion).

I think HIMYM has almost forgone the laugh-out-loud funny momenys completely in favour of telling a dramatic story... which is fine if thats what they want to do and if thats what people want to watch (the ratings don't lie afterall, its doing better then ever as far as I'm aware?)... I just personally find it sad to see one of my formly favourite shows go that way.

My girlfriend called it half way through the 40 minute episode which was really annoying because it was really obvious.

Yeah looking back, it was obvious and apparently it's been floating around online for ages, especially as the title of the episode was "The Last Page", but silly, hungover me still couldn't figure it out.

It's weird, there's been more hate for the show than ever before in this thread in the last week, even though it was a great episode in contrast to what we've seen in the last two and a half years. The show always had as much drama as comedy in it, so I don't get the complaints there, but the drama itself used to be clever, and the comedy basically came from Barney and sometimes Marshall, once they ruined both characters (Barney not been a man-whore anymore and Marshall having a kid) the funny factor disappeared.

I thought this episode was genuinely really funny in the first half and the drama was excellent in the second half, and was clever, like it used to be.

By the way, the next episode after Xmas is apparently called...

Band or DJ, which leads me to believe we'll meet Barney's sister who'll be in the band and then they'll tease us to thinking she's the mother for 12 episodes before it turns out to be a red herring and it was someone else.

It's not so much 'hate' as criticism Cina, and you thought it was a great episode because the first half was funny, and the second moving. As I explained, I hardly laughed at all during the first half (did you really find the theme of the pit 'funny'?), and I also clearly stated why the drama moments didn't move me at all. So as far as I'm concerned, it wasn't a good episode, not especially worse or better than the previous ones, just the same mediocrity. Though Barney was pretty class when he just came over and proposed without saying a word.

Not sure about that really. I loved both HIMYM and Scrubs when they were good, but I think the drop for Scrubs was as significant as it's been for HIMYM. It's true that Scrubs at least tried to be a comedy, but it failed so miserably in the last seasons (pretty much the whole "new interns"-stuff) that I'd honestly rather have if they stopped trying and made it more of a drama. All about personal opinion of course, but IMO late-Scrubs was as poor comedy-wise as HIMYM has been in the past seasons.

I don't count the interns stuff as actual Scrubs... Scrubs ended with the series 8 finale, and that wasn't a bad series on the whole. The notable dip for Scrubs came in series 7 (and it was heavily effected by the writers strike...), but that was only half a series anyway... series 6 before that, was still very good on the whole.

I agree with Wowi.. Scrubs had a considerable dip as well. I would say it was pretty much unwatchable as well in S6 and 7 just like HIMYM has been since last season. Recovered in the last season somewhat and had a good finale. Infact even S4 and 5 of scrubs were very average bar odd episodes. The first 3 seasons were uber though

I would actually say Season 4 is my favourite series... I'd say that was Scrubs at its height.

It also contains (probably) my favourite scene

I thought it was the best episode of the show in years, and reminded me of why I used to like it so much.

At least it went back to its heart - Ted's conquest for love. I actually teared up when he put Robin's happiness before his own. It showed how much he still loves her. I just don't get how Robin could accept the proposal of a douche whilst regularly rejecting a guy who's been in love with her for the past seven, eight years. I really don't get it, particularly because Barney played her once again.

As stupid and as over the top that aspect of the show has gotten it is still her prerogative, as a grown woman, to choose the man she wants over the one she doesn't.

So, I watched my first episode of this the other day. I don't know what one or where abouts in the series it was. The main incredibly dull guy was being coerced by the bigger incredibly dull guy and the smooth, only interesting guy to work for the smooth only interesting guy to make a building, which involved the only interesting guy pulling his "moves" on the smaller incredibly dull guy. Also a boring girl was trying to get over someone we never saw.

It was terrible. You're all awful, awful people.

Yehh, this show is dire.

edit - at mockney

It was pretty good when I was 15 and became emotionally attached to it. I think that's why most people watch it, being too young to know any better and then having put too much into the show not to find out who the fecking mother is.

Is this the last season?
Hopefully.

Regarding this, Carter Bays did an interview, he doesn't give much away, it's just a preview of what will happen, without throwing any spoilers in. Nevertheless, to err on the side of caution, I will.

It is Band or DJ, and I knew that for a while, yet still missed the Barney/Robin climax. So yeah, we can assume they're arranging the wedding.

The second thing was that Bays said Ted's going to throw himself into a relationship with someone who's bad for him (which I don't think will go down well, but it's a pretty relevant plot line). He also mentioned an actress who'd be starring in it, and could well be Ted's girlfriend. If so he's done bloody well for himself.

I didn't find the pit funny. I didn't realise it was meant to be. I did find the Jinxing funny though. How they went back a few years to how it started, then Barney jinxing everyone at the end. The second part I did find quite moving. Ted matching his remaining single friends up, while he's still looking out for someone.

Scrubs went from something of a peak (My Lunch), to an enormous dip with the introduction of Kim. Shocking character, really spoiled it for me. At least Friends kept the child within the 'family', Scrubs brought a whole new, shit character in, and when you think JD's free, she turns out to have lied about the miscarriage. Dreadful stuff. Although I still watched (and even enjoyed in spells) the interns stuff. You still had JD and Elliott, and Cox, Kelso and Turk, so it wasn't all bad.
I would actually say Season 4 is my favourite series... I'd say that was Scrubs at its height.

Completely agree, the only one I have on DVD. So many of the best episodes. Heather Graham's final one, her actual final one, the one with Colin Farrell, My Cake (with JD's dad dying) was one of the best episodes IMO.
No. They will make the final decision in January, but as it seems, there will be another season - the last one. Money talks - the actors were initially against it but a huge payrise might help.

Again, true. I don't know how they'll work it, but again, Carter Bays said they'd decide how the run the end of the season when they know where they stand. The sooner the better. I hate seeing things end (Friends and Scrubs I'd still be watching now), but HIMYM has had its run. Needs to end on a high now.

Liam start watching some good tv instead of dissecting this piece of crap. Really not worth it. Why watch this and new girl instead of it's always sunny, parks and rec etc.? They're all easy watches but this one has lazy, unoriginal writing, spectacularly dull acting and it's wasting the time and money of fans by flogging a dead horse. New Girl is halfway there already.

I've never got the "easy watch" thing. Anything that's good is an easy watch, and if you're as into this as Liam is, then you're not half watching it anyway. You're watching it as intently as something you have to pay attention to. That's most likely 10 times better than this half baked sub par Friends rip off.

Admittedly I've only seen one episode. But that episode was so bad it's clearly more than enough for me to judge it categorically.

My brain can switch off entirely watching It's Always Sunny but Curb or Louie has me paying that bit more attention. You're right though that once you're as invested into the series as Liam is then you're not half-watching.

It's a really bad show, yeah. It and TBBT are just as run-of-the-mill as you get but they're still slightly better than Two and a Half Men or that rubbish Irish transvestite "comedy".

Exactly. It's like with soaps. You watch them enough that you get right into the them. Although I do tend to get invested into everything I watch, no half measures here.

Another thing is that you like talking about it with people. It's an X Factor effect; people watch it because there's nothing else on, and it's something to talk about on Monday. Its problem is that it's got so shit people have turned off from that.

Don't get me wrong, there's other comedies out there like Arrested Development, which may be seen as 'better' and AD really was fantastic, but it's not as good when no one else watches them.

I cannot get into Louie at all. So many people who usually like the shows I like rate it, but I think it's a bit shite.

Did you give it a fair run? I turned it off after 15 minutes into the first episode and didn't watch it again for months but it's really grown on me since.

I'm sort of between you on Louie. I agree it's a tough watch at first, and it gets better when you watch it more, but I still don't think it's the work of genius many others do.

I know people who thought the USO episode was one of the greatest pieces of television ever, whereas I just thought it was quite sweet.

Off topic to the thread but I found this to be quite amusing. His off-timing replies coupled with the ever awkward aura that surrounds him might be something that a lot of people try to pull off but CK does it pretty well.

NSFW I guess

Same here. Quite hard to get into, but if you stick with it, it's quite rewarding. Very good writing, profound at times and hilarious at others. It's a mixed bag, so original, you never know what you're going to get, some episodes are almost depressing, others you'll laugh from beginning to end... Really worth watching, if only cos it's so original and unlike anything else on TV.
