That sounds good and all but surely we'd be better off signing a realistic target in July and bed him in for the season rather than pursue someone who's never going to move here for a month and end up with holes in the squad? We should try to put in a bid for Messi while we are at it.

I doubt anyone would say the former if we signed a talented young midielder or two, hardly anyone expects us to get players at Fabregas level. Last time we signed a top quality world class player from a good club, apart from van Persie which surprised many, was probably 2002 and Veron.

I think we've made another mistake when it comes to addressing the issue of midfield deficiencies.

See the reaction in Fellaini and Cabaye threads.

It's all a bit Goldilocks and the three bears. Eventually we'll find some porridge that's just right.

Well, a lot of people have their doubts over both but most would probably take them at this point. I think signing Fellaini for £20m+ he's likely to cost or Cabaye anywhere near that price won't be a good piece of business but that's mainly because I reckon there are better midfielders outside PL available.

I think some people have been right moaning myrtles but had we put in the bid a month earlier then I think the reaction on here would have been more positive because it would have been more of a realistic target. Just my opinion.

We have been really unlucky as we signed Haegreaves (retired) Fletcher (ill) and if those two hadn't been struck down they would be the main stay of our midfield right now and along with Carrick would be one of the best in Europe! We have been unfortunate in that regard.

waiting for everyone else to catch up!!
Don't think there is anything wrong with trying to sign the best, but Fabregas was always a long shot, and we know now there wasn't really any real chance of getting him. We have wasted quite a bit of time on that transfer with not much happening since. I don't want to knock the new guys so early, it was always going to be difficult with SAF and Gill going at the same time. But i am a little disappointed that we haven't moved quickly for another player since the failed Fab bid, which suggests to me there wasn't much of a contingency plan in place should our main targets not come off.

whoever we buy now will have had little time to familiarize themselves with our set up before the season starts. We have a tough start too, so we will be under pressure right from the off. All in all, i would have liked things to be much further on by now, but we will just have to hope that we can still do the business.

Hopefully we could move on from Fabregas to someone else, the sooner the better as time is running out.

I think most people are in agreement that the move for Fabregas was a positive one. The publicity around it, however, was not a good one. Announcing the bid made it seem like it was likely to end successfully. Clearly it wasn't by the looks of things though once would suspect that there was at least some indication from either Barca or Cesc's camp that it was plausible.

This summer could end up extremely disappointing. The thing that is so frustrating is all of the rhetoric from the club about spending big as though we actually ever even do that.

Yeah but Fletcher has been ill for two years and Hargreaves got injured in September 2008, we really should have addressed the issue sooner. Besides I don't think those two were exactly at the same level as players that Barca, Bayern, Madrid or even Juventus have in midfield.

What people fail to understand is this- United should go for the best payers.if there is a chance.of.signing them See last summer when we brought Robin in. That was a difficult.but realistic target. Fabregas- from day one ws impossible.

See the difference now??

Yes ok mate whatever you say, when we were first interested in RVP, many people thought the deal wasn't possible.

Yes, i remeber that. More -many said we didnt need him  but he had a year left on his contract and said that he wanted to win the league (or something the suggested he was ready to leave). With Fabregas there was no such platform.

Exactly. He said from day one he'd like to join us and even told Wenger. Fabregas just never wanted to leave. Totally different scenario really.

People are crying in Gustavo thread cause United is not going after him, and he's hardly a world class. The moral of the story is that there are midfielders between the unrealistic signings like Cesc and uninspiring ones like Fellaini.

Yep Sarni but we still have Fletcher on the wage bill and not so long ago released Hargreaves.Plus Anderson who was a big investment has be mediocre at best. We have a limit to our budget unlike the teams with sugar daddies. I'm not saying we don't need new blood in midfield it's glaring we do! Just that with our budget SAF managed our resources brilliantly to compete with these teams. Imagine it would have been a different outcome last year had SAF bought a midfielder last season and RVP signed for city!

I don't buy that, sorry, our finances are fine and we could compete with the likes of Juve and Bayern for anyone, we just struggled to identify midfielders and spent our money elsewhere. We're not working on a tight budget so we have to sacrifice some areas, we could spend £15m on someone like Vidal or Gundogan when they were available and no one would notice.

We got forced to spend a year early on Jones and Fletchers illness was a bad one for us. We work to a budget Sarni buddy I'm not overly sure we had the funds as Fergie has never been shy on spending before, it's here say but that's my take on it.

The same year we spent £16m on Jones we got Young as a squad player for £17m when we already had Nani and Valencia in top form, we'd have been much better off with a proper midfield partner for Carrick instead. We received £80m up front for Ronaldo in 2009, we've had the money to spend since.

He picked up a knock yesterday by the way.

A proper one, not an 'impending transfer' one.

Kind of weird after we released that statement about understanding their position though.

But still.. We don't know what the club know...
