With GD the way it is now, Spain will have to beat Chile and hope for a favor from the Dutch.

Very poor performance, lots of nerves. Need to be much better against Spain/Holland. I don't know why Vidal started, hope he can make it for the next match.

Result doesn't matter for us - it is a very young and inexperienced squad.

The performance, especially early in the 2nd half, was outstanding. Very impressive.

Mathew Leckie is a gun.

Great game! :)

Chile looked great at times, their a joy to watch. They'll make it through the group....Its going to go down to the wire in this group. Aussies put up a bit of a fight in the 2nd half, Leckie done well...looks alright. Cahill is unreal in the air... seems to be their only plan though.

Cracking day of football!!

Strachan echoing what I said earlier.... they lost their nerve when Australia scored. A terrible sign for a team who thinks they can go far in this competition. Look like bottlers to me.

I agree. I would say round of 16 at best.

Seems like Cahill should've been sent of. That's what Urs Meier, former WC referee, just said on live German tv.

Chile's defence is pretty poor tbh. That might be their downfall
Chile don't play with a defense. :p They just leave 2 or 3 players back when the rest are attacking and trying to score. Tonight they had a defensive midfielder and a fullback as the 2 main defenders. They don't have the traditional 4 CBs in the squad, they don't have any.

Keep Rodgers at Pool.

Noticed that too, they didn't have a single defender who was playing in his natural position

Spain will put at least 4 past Australia if they snap out of whatever they're feeling right now.
Spain will score more than 5 goals. Australia has nothing to lose and will keep going forward.

If Chile loses against Spain it will have to be like by 1 goal. Chile would then need to hope Holland loses on purpose to them. I still reckon Chile must defeat Spain. Getting back to back draws is a tough thing to do.

Australia might score against the Netherlands but if RVP and Robben continue on from tonight, it could get ugly.

That's the whole thing though.... you really think Holland will lose on purpose when that would mean that they would face Brazil in the next round? Forget about the result between Spain and Chile.... Holland will still want to beat Chile.

Well the quality of the football has been fantastic so far but tomorrow is the biggest chance of it taking a downturn; Columbia v Greece and then England v Italy ;) We live and hope though.

There is no way Chile will beat Holland on goal difference. Holland will probably be +9 or more by the time they are done playing Australia. They could lose to Chile 1 or 2-0 and still avoid Brazil.

I want to see Spain-Brazil in the round of 16... Would be a cracker of a game so early too while also being a knockout game.

It's obvious Australia's only way to score is from crosses into the box. Cahill was bound to have an easy time in the air against a defensive midfielder and a full back, both of whom aren't that great in the air. With Chile's gung-ho approach, Australia were always going to have a few chances on the break.

On the 2nd half, though, Chile's team tired out quite a bit, and their attacking players were quickly closed down and faced lots of aggression. A fully fit Vidal would have made Chile better than they were in the 2nd half. Too bad he seemed to suffer an injury as he limped off to the bench frustrated.

This was Australia's best chance of scoring goals (which they did) and get at least a point. They didn't get that point. Now, they'll have to play miraculously to get something against Spain and the Netherlands, even a goal.

Chile, on the other hand, with so few defenders in their team, will have to score lots of goals to stand a chance of qualifying. Their gung-ho approach has to produce results and maintain pressure on the opposition. With their approach, if del Bosque doesn't make many changes in his side, Chile can stand a chance of getting at least a point.

Brazil will beat them again like they did in the Confed Cup. Spain is a one trick pony,

Not if Chile beat Spain. And anyway, based on tonights performance I think that Spain could wallop Chile. Last two games are played at the same time so yeah, Holland won't be taking their eyes off the prize. Nor will Chile, even if they lose to Spain.

The End?
I'm really proud of my boys today (Aussie right here), but I think we could have got so much more from that. Markie's chance with the volley should have gone in except for some wonderful keeping from Chile, Timmy score the offside goal....and I think we should have had a penalty and a free kick or two near the box. But at the end of the day, it's just our what 6th game under Postecoglou, and against a great team in Chile, we played very well. Well done, Socceroos.

What happened to Vidal in this game? He looked a bit out of his depth and was substituted early.

They didn't know what to do with Cahill. What a legend. 34 and still throwing himself about like a young lad. You should be proud of the teams commitment, especially after such a dreadful start.

Don't discount them, honestly. Holland were class.... gameplan played out to perfection. Was there a gameplan involved in Chile's match? Didn't see one.

Spain are too good a team to just lie down now. We're not talking about France 10 here. And are we going to compare Australia to Holland?

Nobody is discounting Spain but its pretty moronic to suggest that Spain are going to wallop anybody based on the games played today.

So you think Chile will beat Holland or Spain based on their performance tonight? It's all relative baby.

Good performance from the roo's in the second half. You could still tell they were a class below, but at least they made a match of it. Though tactics seemed to involve push it wide, run and cross in to cahill.

Chile win their match 3 -1.
Spain get obliterated 5 -1.

You: "And anyway, based on tonights performance I think that Spain could wallop Chile"

Based on their performance tonight Chile would murder Spain who have looked like the worst team in the tournament. Of course anyone judging any of these teams on ONE GAME is a moron.

Wow, just wow. What deep understanding of the sport you have revealed to me in that riveting and insightful analysis of tonight's games as well as the squads. I'm sorry, I bow to your superior knowledge.

Did you even watch the games? You understand who was who and what colours they were wearing and where they're positioned in terms of ranking and ability in the game? Ah forget it...

Chile's midfield seemed more solid once Vidal went off. Clearly not ready yet, hopefully he'll do better against Spain, they'll need him.

Very proud of the boys, apart from the first 15 minutes or so, we were the better team. A young inexperienced squad, but did their country proud.
We were very unlucky, had a few calls go against us and despite creating many opportunities could not find that final pass.

Probably a good idea.
I think so. Chile were crap against a limited but resilient and courageous team. Spain were destroyed by great tactics and world class players who put the fear of God in them. Huge difference, and we're talking about the World Champions here. Teams like that don't go crap over night. No need for the kneejerk reaction you gave me.
