Jordy Clasie starts in the first 11 tonight! You'll see why he is such a great talent. Fantastic overview and a great long passes as well.

Thought he looked very good in the bit of him I saw against Argentina. Whether it's because he was playing against tired defenders or not I don't know, but the Netherlands looked better with him on the pitch.

Should have started Veltman, Kongolo, Depay. Maybe even Huntelaar.

Who cares about this really.

You're right pal. LvG had to start with him in place of Wijnaldum who played really weak. Clasie brought a bit of more strenght in the team!

I don't really understand the idea that this game is all that pointless. It's far less pointless, for example, than the 3rd place playoff for the Confederations Cup or the 3rd and 5th placed playoff for the Club World Cup. It's also, arguably, more meaningful than a 9th vs 10th placed premier league game towards the end of the season. It's arguably more meaningful than a 3rd vs 4th Champions League group game when both clubs cannot qualify.

Basically, football is filled with completely pointless games being pointlessly played for no reason, other than them being scheduled to take place. That's not to mention that 22 men kicking a football around a park for 2 hours isn't all that meaningful to begin with.

The winner gets the title of 3rd placed. The loser gets the title of "semi-finalist" (see England Italia 90). It's one more chance to see two teams we may have grown to love, it's one more chance to entertain.

I don't really care who wins, just let it be entertaining!

The difference is that we did not know that this game would be pointless ... when they scheduled it.

We do know that the 2018 World Cup 3rd-4th place game will be pointless.

I hoped Terence Kongolo would started but Van Gaal choose for the slow snail Blind instead.. So hope he'll come on for the last 30 minutes. He's going to be much better than Martins Indi for sure.

So you don't think it makes a difference to be 3rd or 4th?

Blind has been a good performer thus far. I agree about Kongolo>Indi, though. Not been impressed with Indi at all.

I dunno I think they are fun. No one has to watch it.

Its a nice prelude to the final (unlike the europa league which is stupidly after the champions league games) its on a day when we would otherwise not get any football (well today or tomorrow), etc.

I mean let's be honest.. It is pointless. But fun. Hopefully.

Edit: meant to reply, but can't be bothered to fix it.

It's more a olympics thing when Bronze medal is at stake.

Doesn't really suit a WC after going out in Semi's.
And who cares about some 3rd place medal? :smirk:
Imo it shows a bad attitude not to value the 3rd place and actually showing that you are better than the other team but that might be the german in me speaking. :D
Besides that I'm of the opinion that more football can never be a bad thing and the reason why this discussion emerges might be due to the fact that Brazil is part of this game but previous teams didn't have too much of a problem with the game and they were actually kinda entertaining.

There we go.. Guzman is really bad. Against Spain and Australia he played twice as bad as Cleverly normally plays..
Yeah, but what other option is there unless you change formations and bring in Depay which i was hoping for.

Where does Martin O'Neill's bitterness towards Van Gaal come from? To my knowledge they've never even crossed paths as players or managers. Every single time O'Neill opens his mouth to discuss Van Gaal some snide comment soon follows. Love someone to explain what about Van Gaal gets O'Neill's knickers in a twist.

O'Neill comes across as being very bitter for some reason.
