I'd say van Gaal is just testing to see if Valencia is capable of playing in the position he is in today. I believe this formation is being used as an assessment of the players. I'm pretty sure van Gaal knows Rafa's quality, specifically from his CL performance against Bayern in 2010. Which was seen in a traditional back four.
