I take it no one bothered to ask him about the Herrera situation? Rooney playing in midfield? Januzaj playing in midfield? Or the fact that we had 6 players playing out of position/in a formation that doesnt suit them against West Ham?

His behaviour is bizarre. Feeling the need to respond to this and hand out statistics to the press is not the behaviour if a man who is confident in what he's doing.

It's almost Benitez-esque. If Rodgers did this fans on here would be pissing themselves. If Moyes did it the knives would be straight out.

He can trot out all the stats he wants - he isn't going to convince people who watch football with any regularity that what we're seeing in an attacking sense is anything other than poor.

And as far as the long ball stuff goes that's exactly what he did - Fellaini on and the ball pumped towards him, just like he did at the World Cup with Leroy Fer on a couple of occasions. Why doesn't he just admit that's what he did, or even better not rise to a jibe from a bloke who loves long ball and maintain a dignified silence in the matter.
Well, the Knives are out and lot of the opposition fans are pissing themselves. Doesn't make it right though. We need to calm down a bit.

That looked like a typical stunt from political debate when arrogant and confident future president hands over his opponent bunch of statistics that won't matter in a longer run and doesn't necessarily explain the core problems of a country.

That's about the length of his current contract.

Seriously, you can't make this shit up.
I never expected him to stay beyond his contract to be fair. He was brought on to steady the ship and hopefully win a trophy or two if he can.

He shouldn't have responded to that and given it more credence than it deserved. Don't get the overreaction here though, it's not like he's breaking down, cracking etc. In fact it looks like he's in control and 'schooling' others which is exactly what one should expect, given his egoistical style.

“When a colleague of mine (Allardyce) is saying this kind of thing then, yeah, you have to see the data and you have to put the data in the right context,” Van Gaal said.

“I think the media is also coming to the match and you have a lot of opinion about me, or the game, or the players and now you say that you have no opinion.

“When you have 60% ball possession do you think that you can do that with long balls?

“Yeah, long balls, in the width, to switch the play. You have to look at the data and then you will see that we did play long balls, but long balls wide, rather than to the striker.

“A ball to the forward striker is mainly called long ball play. Because I expected this question, I have made an interpretation of the data for this game and then I have to say that it is not a good interpretation from Big Sam.

“It is not so difficult also to read that.”

With Fellaini playing a central role in United’s attacks on goal in the final stages, Van Gaal insisted his more direct approach in an attempt to salvage a point was justified.

“I am sorry, but we are playing ball possession play and after 70 minutes we did not succeed, in spite of many chances in the second half, then I changed my playing style,” Van Gaal said.

“Then, of course, with the quality of Fellaini we played more forward balls and we scored from that, so I think it was a very good decision of the manager.

“But, when you see overall the long ball, and what is the percentage of that, then West Ham have played 71% of the long balls to the forwards and we 49 per cent.

“So, I give you this (data) you can see that the blue ones (arrows) are the good ones because long balls are also very difficult, which is why I began with the explanation of ball possession.

“When you have 60% ball possession you cannot play long balls.

“So again, they did it 71 and we 49, and I give it you, you can copy it and then maybe you can go to Big Sam and he will get a good interpretation.

Unnecessary no doubt but I found it quite funny and condescending even, to a certain extent. Not exactly riled up or anything. Won't be surprised if this isn't his first time rebuking a comment and 'educating' the lesser masses in a press conference. Perhaps @Henrik Larsson or the Bayern fans could give a better insight on his press conference history.

Don't get what all the fuss is about. LVG is eccentric and does some unexpected stuff, surely we should all be aware of it by now. He hasn't done anything cringy here imo. Unnecessary, no doubt, but this is getting overblown by the fans here, who are in fear of being ridiculed by opp fans. So what? Even then it's hardly more cringeworthy than what Mourinho and Rodgers have been spouting. Pulling a Keegan? :wenger: Geez...

I get the impression that he didn't give them the chance. He went on his rant, if you can call it that. Stunned the press and took their attention away from the important stuff. Clever really.

Have you seen the presser?

Maintaining dignified silences just isnt Van Gaal. I'd rather see the fiery side of him than the calm one we have seen so far.

We all knew hes an egotistical stubborn fella so i'm not surprised if he went off at the presser and frankly I dont care as long as we get the results we need. This season a CL spot and next season challenge for the title. He'll almost definitely leave when his contract is up.

Van Gaal was never known for his wit or composure regarding the media, he made me laugh more than once with things like this while he was at Munich. I've said this before, van Bommel said it best; great coach, weird man. The comparison with the teaching is accurate, he really thinks he has to educate people and let's face it Jamie Jackson certainly needs it.

I get the impression that he didn't give them the chance. He went on his rant, if you can call it that. Stunned the press and took their attention away from the important stuff. Clever really.
I'm not sure whether it was intentional, but it protects the players and his team, I'm alright with that.

The reaction on here is certainly more cringeworthy than the whole thing, then again it's expected given for most it's already decided we aren't playing in Europe next season.

Just on the whole "people see what they want to see" thing, you'll note that not one person has come up with the standard line you'd expect if Fergie or Mourinho had done something like this. How clever the manager is being at deflecting the attention away from a poor performance from his team and making the media narrative all about him, personally instead. Not saying this was Van Gaal's intention (it probably wasn't on his mind) but it is funny the way people spin stuff depending on how successful the manager is at the time. One manager's "meltdown" is another manager's "mind games", evidently.

EDIT: damn you, @bucky, for making my first sentence a lie!

If I was in charge of the presser I'd have simply said:

"I've been learning of Sam"

Here's the full press conference.

Also, the lot of you that is whining about him and the stats. Go support another club please. He knew he was going to be asked the question because the press is well, the fecking press looking for some news. He has never been one to shy away and he put Big Sam in his place. Also he mentions that the media comes to the match and they have opinions about him so he knows most speak crap about him or twist things about what he says as does this story.

Look at this

Idiotic comments. Things like 'lack of changes from LvG during the game' yet LvG brought on Fellaini and Fellaini scored. Idiot. Sounds a lot like some here.

Even if it was, believe you me it wasn't by design.

Wasn't his honesty getting the praise in previous press conference threads?

When Big Sam gets in your head, you know you're in trouble!

Come On Louis, you're better than that
Nail on head, very Rafa.
If Liverpool served up that shite on Sunday and Rodgers came out with this in his presser, everyone here would be breaking their bollix laughing and winding @Barney up about it.

In fact, thats pretty much what did happen back in 2009
Instead he said they were outstanding getting a 0-0 against their local rivals. Not Fahcts, but still pretty crap comment.

Just got home to see Van Gaal's dossier (well, the news about it, I haven't read the actual thing). First thing I thought was "oh, that's all a bit Rafa, isn't it?" Bit...er...bit embarrassing. Well, when I point the finger at players for diving, I always say I don't want to see it from Nani, or Young, or any of our players, so if I'm going to mock Rafa's list of facts, then frankly I have to say that Van Gaal doing this is exactly the same sort of thing.

The stats may well back him up, I don't know, but surely just going "nope, Sam's wrong" would be better than going all "RIGHT, WHERE'S MY PHOTOCOPIER?"

This is Van Gaal we're talking about. He was never going to take a dig about playing style from Sam fecking Allardyce lying down.

To be fair though, Moyes would probably apologise for scoring a late equaliser and making all those press dicks re-write their match report at the last minute.

Rodgers would come out and say why it takes a wonderful human being to play long balls and that "There's an old saying about *gulp* long balls that if you play them up to the false 8 who is doing what I call a 'mexican run' you know, a little wee mexican run in there, that they aren't really long but are actually wonderful ways to express angles."

The single best thing to come out of this, is that the presser woman's name is Karen Shotbolt :lol: Such a sensual name

Can you imagine?!

"Give it to me shotbolters.."

"... Love hath bequeath me, My dearest Shotbolt"

I think the significance of this presser should not be underestimated. It's the manager of Manchester United standing up against accusations against the club, team and players. This will give a signal to other managers who fancy mind games with the dutch meistro. He actually went through the statistics whereby other managers whould probably shrug it off. This to me is a clear sign that LvG still has that fire which shaped him into one of the best managers. From the players point of perspective, i would appreciate a manager standing up for his club and team.

The long and short of it we've been mostly unconvincing entertainment wise.

For context. Here's Big Sam's interview.

Watch from about 0:50 - 1:20

He doesn't really say anything wrong. He's taking the piss a little bit but essentially all he's said is that we were launching the ball into the box in the end. Not that we were doing it all game.

I'm not sure if LVG even saw his interview or just heard 'long ball United'. He looks like a bit of an idiot really. Saying this, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

I'd say Keegan 'losing it on telly' was an indication as to his state of mind. Some of his decisions behind the scenes would, no doubt, have been as odd. Same goes for Benitez. Him ranting on set showed what he was feeling/acting like off set.

They may still have lost anyway, and the rant alone didn't turn wins into defeats and draws, but they symbolised the manager struggling to deal with it all. Obviously all that the rant does is increase the pressure.
Agree. Although I think Keeagan one will always be a stand out as it was clear to everyone that he was a man under extreme pressure(the ironic image of him slumped in the dug after the final whistle against Liverpool showed that) but with Rafa it didn't really do anything(Although I don't think Fergie was trying anything other than his usual tricks)We still need a last minute macheda winner(:drool::drool::drool:).

While managers letting off some steam(Like LVG today) is a bit out of the blue, it's hardly something to take notice off, especially when it comes from experience manager like LVG. Who also has a track record of saying crazy shite.
