The thing is Kubrick was a photographer at heart and was far more interested in the technical aspects of filmmaking and shot composition than he was about telling a story and spoon feeding it to an audience.
True.

When I watched most of his movies, I was not aware that he was some highly rated director, I watched it on recommendations of a friend who was interested in such technically interesting movies, so was I, it was only after watching and enjoying most of his movies that I came to know that was generally rated so highly and to be honest I was a bit surprised as I thought his type of cinema would be limited to a particular type of audience and not to the pleasure of everyone.

The Dark Knight.
The movie overall is good, but it was Ledger's performance that has made people love it. I personally rate Batman Begins more. It is a nice trilogy that combined mainstream popcorn elements with some gripping sequences but as @Guy said, it has kickstarted a cringeworthy stream of superhero nonsense without Nolan's intelligence on when to let it become lame and OTT.

My view is the same as yours Heath Ledger was incredible in TDK but other than that its just a good movie not one of the greatest movies of all time as some people make it sound like. Also Rises was crap, like I dont think its a good movie at all.

I know a lot won't agree with me, while I can appreciate it being insightful, it's one of the most boring films I have sat through.

Ok this is just silly. Its a great film, I think its pretty rated pretty spot on generally.
Its 4th of imdb's top 250 movies ever and many people consider it among the best movies of all time. I disagree with this totally but still I think its a good movie just not an earth shattering one.

Rises was quite hyped before it's release, but it was one of those rare cares where the hype pushed up its perception rather than resulted in disappointment.

The script was far poorer and more convoluted than the Dark Knight, and the ending was pretty mixed up and rushed.

I wouldn't normally quote Honest Trailers as a review, but their line about it being the sort of movie that you thought was okay when you were actually watching it in the theatre, but made you get progressively more confused and angry about it when you thought about it after was a good way of phrasing it.

That's how I feel about all of Nolan's movies. I come out of each and every one thinking "hell yeah" but on closer inspection, realise that they're just elevated popcorn movies, a step or two above Independence Day. He's invariably talked about as a great director, but there's very little that's memorable about any of his movies (in terms of the director's hand). He does everything with confidence and aplomb and there is no denying his films are a good watch (considering they're all about 9 hours long) but whereas I can quite easily pinpoint great moments and scenes from my favourite movies and really admire the abilities of their directors ... I can't say that about Nolan.

Southpaw. Tiresome.
Good performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, but so unashamedly clichéd it actually annoyed me at times.

When Forest Whitaker showed up as his reluctant grizzled trainer with something to prove, I remember my eyes almost rolled into the back of my head.

I enjoyed Prisoners but the latter two were very tedious. Jessica Chastain was phenomenal, apparently...
Phenomenal my ass. I really don't even care that much for acting performances, I take it for granted with big moviestars but the movie itself was just not exciting at all.

Fight Club.

Absolutely bores the tits off me. I watched it expecting this awesome film that would blow my mind. Instead, I saw the 'twist' coming a mile off and ended up wasting a couple of hours of my life.

The first rule of Fight Club should be: don't watch Fight Club. It's shit.

Literally everything in the film had been done before, and to a higher standard. Don't forget 50 Cent's performance, almost every line of his would require subtitles to get the whole sentence.

I might spoil it for you by saying this but did you stick around till the twist?
Yeah

I turned it off when it was revealed she was alive and she was eating a burger and cutting her hair or something

You can't judge a film you haven't finished watching.

In this particular case, it was a bit stupid to turn it off. Not that it's an instant classic or anything, but it's a good film and you should've stuck with it til the end.

Not so much one movie but Tarantino's references in his movies take the piss at times.Kill Bill being the biggest culprit, there's almost nothing original about it.

The argument that it's paying homage to the movies it's referencing is a kop out, if that's case just make a youtube video of your favourite movies scenes.

Have to agree on this. It's a good movie but not God tier some people make it to be.

I just watched the aggressively stupid "The Shining". This is supposed to be a classic?

No there isn't and he's admitted it. The B movie method is derived straight from cheesy tamil action flicks - namely Aalavandhan.

That 'twist' was fresh 20 years ago. In movie it was also frequently alluded. It's certainly not the point of the movie.
