Good performance with a crap result
Aye good summary. I can stomach a crap result if we put in a good performance. This is not like the performance at Swansea.

There are a few mental problems at the club, really Mata and Schweinsteiger should have stepped up a bit more. Carrick should have started as well.

Scholes just slated LVG, said our team his weaker than last year.
Well then he should have quit while he was ahead because I actually found myself agreeing with him for once until that point

All of those knobs on BT Sport desperate for a talking point banging on about Van Persie leaving and Hernandez leaving etc....in case they hadn't notice Van Persie, Hernandez and Falcao scored a grand total of about 12 goals between them for Utd last year in all comps so sure we won't miss them that much!

No attacking option from the bench.

Hoof it to Fellaini when we are losing.

Smalling and Fellaini were strikers in the last minutes.

Enough said.

Shaw injury is a huge letdown.

All in all less said tonight the better.
I think it's best we all fecked off today. Already depressed from the injury, and we put in a half-hearted performance.

The lack of quality and depth in our attack isn't doing us any favours. 7 goals in 6 games this season, and I'm not counting the shit against Brugge, tells the full story.

And we've conceded 5 in 6, to make matters better.

Some major overreaction in the matchday thread. Mata wasn’t terrible and we did go with a lightweight midfield. We didn’t have to. Then Louis makes a terrible sub in throwing on Fellaini for Herrera, further limiting our strength in midfield and people get all upset about Mata not being able to dominate a midfield with a clearly tired Bastian. And what does Fellaini do? What he was of course going to do unless he came on as a #10: slow us down and lose more possession.

Terrible about Shaw. Absolutely devastating.

But there are major positives in the game - this is where we saw Martial can become our main striker and we look threatening with him, he’s strong in holding up the ball and his link up play is top class for a 19 year old. Lining up with actual wingers makes us better. Maybe we’ll see youngsters get a chance on the right.

I think we were extremely unfortunate to lose the game. Bad mistakes for sure, but we looked much the better side IMV, until van Gaal made his subs.
That's why I said he should have taken off Bastian, as you say he was tiring, taken off Mata and put on both Michael and Morgan and moved Ander into the No.10 position. He made a right mess of the substitutions.

Thats right, I forgot Martial is a left back.
He's a 19 year old with 12 goals to his name. Even Van Gaal has said he's one for the future. As it is we've had to throw him in because we have nothing else. It's terrible management to leave yourself with so few options. And how many games has Martial actually played up front?

In comparison to what? I agree with the fact that we are not one of the top top European sides anymore, but Manchester United isn't what it used to be under SAF anymore. Post SAF this is a good as we've been. Which is still cookie cutter and gash, but it's better than Moyes.
Under Fergus we could score. Even in SAF last season we might let in 2 but we would score 3.

We have spent a fortune in transfers and yet have a weaker squad than last season.

We are playing poor football that is all about possession and not allowing the talent of the players to shine.

We need a manager who demands fast attacking football.

We lost a football match to a side that lost to Ludogorets 2-0 at home.

No 2 games are the same, I get that. But our side was clueless and vapid. Tell me that wasn't the case.
It wasn't the case, because we clearly should have won this game at a canter, as we were the better side, and would have done if our finishing had been a bit better.

And if you consider that what happened to Shaw might have had an affect on our players (Footballers in being human being shocker!) then I'm happy to write this night off.

Playing Blind left back instead of Rojo and suddenly playing Memphis on the right cost us the game. I'm surprised I haven't read anyone saying this. Their left back was on a yellow, can't believe LVG switched Memphis and Young.
I noticed the Memphis switch but was not overly bothered to remember it. Come to think of it, that switch made no tactical sense.

Stellar argument. You got me.
I don't need to make an argument. You just watched that game and said we got played off the park. There's no argument I can make that goes beyond "that is stupid and you're stupid for thinking it". It'd be like if someone said "LVG needs to wear a purple suit and we will win more". It's just stupid.

Are you saying he a.) Didn't play well or b.) Isn't a striker?

More bothered about Shaw than the result. If we win at least 4 of the remaining games it should put us through, and if we don't, we don't deserve to progress anyway.

Thought we played pretty well in general, played some lovely stuff at times, just could do with someone with a bit of killer instinct to finish off moves. At the moment we're trying to pass it in. I'd be tempted to brush it off as 'one of those games', but it's a bit concerning how common those have been in the past two years or so.

We played well enough to get a result. Mata wasn't great, never like seeing Fellaini coming on, it works so infrequently.

Need to be patient with these new young forwards.

One step forward, two backwards. Once the opposition takes the lead these days, I don't have the feeling we'll comeback. One of the matches we really should have put our foot down and come away with at least one point, we've gone and lost and played like massive idiots, Mata especially. I hope he's dropped now. Darmian was also very poor, and why did LVG think it was a good idea to break up a center-back partnership? I don't get this man at times, tries to be too clever. I'm so gutted for Luke Shaw, after all his hardwork over the summer, started really well and now, he's had a terrible injury.

So here comes all the negativity again, it's honestly laughable how fickle the fans are on here.

I'm bitterly disappointed to lose Shaw like that, the guy's got back to his best and been our best attacking threat thus season, and worst of all, it'll see Blind move to left back. This is going to really badly affect our defensive balance, I just don't rate Rojo's positional sense, and the lack of pace with Blind at full back is a major weakness.

Really disappointed that Mata finally got to play centrally and really didn't cut it. He has to show more than that in the role, hopefully Rooney can slot in there when he's fit.

At the end of the day, they've scored somewhat fortunately from a corner, and again from a poor error from Darmian, who was really poor tonight for the first time in a United shirt. We looked so much more dangerous going forward, and looked in complete control in possession. The link between Memphis and Martial looks really promising, and on another day both might have found the net.

When we create like that, you cannot complain about the performance considering what we have seen so far this season. We lack the defensive balance when Schneiderlin isn't playing though.

We lost for the same reason that we lost against Swansea. The team isn't creating chances. Goals were conceded from a corner and a Darmian mistake that couldn't be rectified.

Some people are overreacting. Thought we played well enough generally.

Tbh if you told me Shaw was going to break his leg that early I'd probably have guessed we'd go on to lose. Aside from the changes we had to make in defence, it was bound to have an impact on them mentally I'd have thought. I know my focus certainly went.

The most positive aspect of tonight's performance was the spark between Martial, and Memphis. It definitely has potential.

Annoyed at the result but gutted as Shaw will be a big loss for us over the course of the season. Believe we'll pick ourselves up and be fine in the group. PSV ain't winning another game imo.

Scholes, please stop slating LVG for once, just give it up mate and let us breathe for a day. We're not halfway through the season yet, judge him then. Man City spent far more than us and lost at home to Juve, so please have a go at them and give us a break.

But that's the point, last year we had Rooney and RVP and yet LVG still thought we need another world class striker and got in Falcao.

This year he thinks Rooney and some young 19 year old is good enough! Crazy stuff especially when Utd always had 4 top strikers in the team years gone by.

That performance was better than any of our premier league games. The finishing was horrible.

On another day we could have won 5 1 but very disappointed as I thought they were a very limited team .

I haven't read the comments here but tonight it showed our weaknesses! Despite being 2-1 down we couldn't create anything against PSV. That's just not good enough. We made everything so slow and complicated. It's clear that this is shown clear in such a game. We didn't play well at all imo and should have done so much better on all fronts

I can see how you got that title.

I guess in a way LVG is starting to establish his reign around here. So long as we have more possession and pass completion, even the fans will believe we played better than the opposition. Nevermind the fact that we barely gave the opposition keeper anything to do while 2-1 down. I mean that doesn't matter, right? Just look at this 70% possession. We're smashing them!

Don´t worry. Nobody is more clueless defensively than Wolfsburg. The way they conceded goals last season against Inter and Napoli in the EuropaLeague was pathetic and today I saw the same shitty wide open defense, when up 1-0 in the 85th minute. I say 5-2 United win. Lots of goals. If they can´t score against Wolfsburg LVG should be gone.
LOL dude,
Please don't jinx us.
If they plan to park the bus (and judging from what you are saying, they will need to), we may end up drawing or losing.
We do best against team who attempt to dominate us. Teams who accept that we are better than them, so they let us dominate the midfield, tend to park the bus and then beat us.

its plain for anyone to see we are better off this year. We lack a striking option, but otherwise we are way stronger. Overreactions. We will get out this group as leaders - I bet it. Odds anyone?

I think there is a lot of positivity to take away from the game. We completely dominated and our passing ability looks like it's up there with best in Europe. We are a very different team compared to how we were when we were last in the CL and I think we are much better for it...we just need to figure out how to score more goals.

Come to think of it, this game kind of has the same feel to it as that game a few years back when Vidic got injured early on, and you knew he would be out for a long time. If I'm not mistaken we lost that game 2-1 as well, and it was in the CL.

Match was defined by that cnut Moreno. Injures our player, escapes conceding a penalty and a red card then goes on to score.

I have no idea how we lost that.
That is what I am really upset about, we should have won tonight. We will thrash them at OT. I hope the atmosphere is really hostile and they give Moreno absolute hell.

Don't let facts get in the way. He said we were more unbalanced and left ourselves not enough forwards. He actually said he felt encouraged by how we played tonight.

Yeah, he didn't react to where we were falling behind, even though we still had good momentum. He chose to throw in the wildcard Fellaini at the cost of the whole team shape and was understandably not rewarded. I would like him to take that one on the chin, bad error.

But the game provided a glimpse into what we can do with pace, width and an actual striker.
