I think the only thing holding Woodward back from appointing Mourinho is that he'd fear the likes of Fergie and Co going after him next at the first sign of trouble. If Giggs got appointed, they would leave Woodward alone. Go with Mourinho and he's taking a risk on his own, which doesn't seem like his style. For now, he has the Glazers support but they'd back off if the likes of Scholes, Rio, Yorke etc call him out.

I'm quite disgusted tbh

Search through the forum, I said years ago that Klopp was made for Liverpool, and I mean't it as an insult. I don't like the man but, Christ can you see his influence and mindset installed into a very limited set of players....You can see what he is building...

LvG....Goes on and on about a process but no one has a fecking clue what he is trying to build. To this day, I know people who will refuse to blame him and demand he see out his contract because he is "building something special." Unless it's a cesspool of shit, I ain't got a clue what he's building and I've been following football 23 years  And make no mistake about it, he will be here next year. Same old shite, same old boring mess....And then Giggs comes along and he's running back to Fergie, every few minutes, asking "How do I do this?" As we face Stoke in a battle of the mid table titans

The contrast is staggering. Liverpool 4 or 5 years ago couldn't touch us and now look. It's eye watering.

A good example being, a few years ago, people on this forum whinged about going to Wembley and they don't like it. Now, some people are reaching for the champagne because we're at Wembley. Standards are dropping. Big time. I don't mean to offend anyone with my post but, I worry for us unless this clown is lifted and someone like Mourinho comes in

LVG was always meant to be a steady the ship type of hiring, Klopp is a permanent solution. In some respects he has done good but in most he's almost sunk the ship. Our next appointment will have to be a good one, or Liverpool will have the better future.

This x10000000

How the hell can't the board see this ffs...Why are we still hearing "Ah SAF and SBC don't like that" Why?! What has Mourinho done that is worse than what Fergie, Eric, Martin Edwards, Keano, Sharpe, Kanchelskis, Giggs, Rooney etc have done? I cannot wrap my head around it

What the hell is going on here??!

That tonight by Liverpool, and it sickens me to say this but, that was Manchester United. That's how we operated. Now, we're happy for a trip to Wembley?!

Beggers fecking believe and how Woodward has gotten through this, without even the smallest bit of abuse, is beyond me....Again, I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm just disgusted with it all

I understand every club needs a rebuilding now and again but this, this ain't a rebuild....This is regression

This constant repeating of 'if X player is having a decent season then the standards have dropped' line is is both tedious and mind-boggling.

First of all, it's been said 1922299292928399 times already, and many a time by the same posters. We get it, they have dropped. What does it have to do with let's say Daley Blind who IS having a decent/good season? That we had better players in his position in the past? Yes we had. You have to work with what you've got, though, and the truth is those scapegoat-like players like Blind, or Fellaini (for a brief period) and Young towards the end of last season, were/are doing their utmost best to enhance our performances. It's actually marquee players like Di Maria or even Schweini who have been the problem because they were believed to be at the level required and still let us down or aren't weren't even good enough for our 'mediocre' level. Isn't that a bigger problem? Because, you know, they were/are perfectly good enough to fit in our previous, high standards.

You have to draw a line between ambition, aspiration and reality. At the moment, we have a team full of young players, seasoned internationals preparing to call it a day and squad players. Nobody's saying that's ideal but why do some people get so anal about evaluating on players' performances according to the general level of our team? Surely, if sb sticks out as having a good season, but in the eyes of some on here is not good enough as a player or not big a name, then it's sufficient to say: 'he's having a decent season, I'll give him that'. Why does every such review have to end with 'if............then the standards have dropped'. Feck me, we all know they have.

Completely agree. You can tell Klopp and Liverpool are going places and that hes making progress with his team. In a few months he's done the same or more than Lvg has done in 2 years. I think if we keep him or replace him with giggs we are going to end up going through a 5-6+ year transition from Ferguson leaving. We are already at the end of year 3.

And by that point I worry City and Liverpool will be looking formidable considering they have Guardiola and Klopp.

Its a bit of a mess as I think it would have all been avoided if Ferguson had just picked Mourinho instead of Moyes in 2013. Awful decision

Unfortunately at this moment in time and despite the itks on here (mourinho appointment)Liverpool have a far better looking future than we do and as Rossi said it's madness that we've let Liverpool catch up with us nevermind Spurs etc.

I feel guilty that 90% of my posts are in here but I love Utd and always have since I was old enough to know what it means to be a fan and a supporter and these clowns have and are destroying something that means so much to us all, we won't win anything or progress with old pan face other than some random flukey wins.

Sooner than later Kloppmeister will get it right at pool then that will be another team we will be behind despite having the possibility to build on what we had but screwing it up so badly it's a complete joke to everyone but the people that matter!

If we don't sort this out soon we will be behind the usual suspects plus Spurs and Liverpool, it's ridiculous that the powers that be have just basically sat on their hands Hoping something clicks just so they can save some face despite fecking up the club and team throughout!

Also, in a way, I understand Sir Bobby's stance......I for the absolute life of me can't understand why Fergie has a say in any of this and why his name keeps cropping up in "disputes" over managerial appointments.

He said, on numerous occasions, once he has retired that's him done. That he wanted to avoid the mistakes when the great Sir Matt Busby retired. I can't for the life of me understand why his name keeps coming up. It's insane.

I'm no David Moyes fan, as most of you know but, Fergie saying "Aye I chose him" to "Well, he wasn't my choice exactly" was disgraceful

It's not Jurgen Flopp any more, I see. All it took was a couple of good games from Liverpool for us to claim they have a 'far better looking future'. They may well have, if Klopp is really that good like most think but we're probably signing one of the best managers in the business this summer (who allegedly wants to stay for longer this time round) + we have 3/4 of the hottest prospects in European football right now and all of them seem to be tailor-made for big occasions. Jeez, why so much negativity.

Names?

Martial and who else? Please don't say Rashford. He's done brilliantly and has the ability so let's see first

Martial, Rashford and TFM (who is about to be called up for his NT). Then there is a question mark over Depay who was coming to us as THE hottest prospect. Then there's a pool of decent/good potential in Perreira, Januzaj (still), CBJ. The future here should be the least of our problems. It's what we'll do in the summer that counts.

Atilla also said that Klopp has done more/as much as LvG in just few months. Well, we played like a machine for a few games here and there last season with LvG being just a few months into his job. Just saying. I think Klopp will have done better than LvG but to say we are fecked is so negative (seeing he won't be here after the season ends). Perhaps it's just me, I hate pessimism and flagellation.

You forgot to mention Shaw too, who is still young enough to be mentioned in your list.

Shaw, Martial I'll give you....As much as I really like Rashford and Big Timmy, you can't call them the hottest prospects in Europe after a few games. That's a ridiculous expectancy to put on players at that age after 10 games collectively

'Timmy' has been well-known and acknowledged in footballing circles way beforehand. I started watching him a good couple of years ago. Rashford is a puzzle but you don't do what he can if you aren't a top talent. In big games, too.

EDIT: Also, I said 3/4 OF the hottest prospects in Europe, not that them 3/4 are THE best ones.

Not saying he isn't. Just saying it's not a good thing to be labelling them the biggest prospects in Europe after a handful of senior games.

Timbo, we've all heard about and known about. But, like Morrison, it can all go horribly pear shaped.

The two lads are the only things getting me excited about United lately so I'm not talking them down. I just think calling them the hottest prospects in Europe at this early stage is far too much

TFM is a deeply religious person with strong family bond. He's not a gangsta wannabe like Ravel and he has actually received a few chances in the first team. Got his start in an important game where he was our best player. He's making difference every time he plays (however few times he's played).

EDIT: perhaps you're right about waiting a little bit before we label them as the hottest prospects but surely all of us must see that the future, young players' wise, is far from worse than this of Liverpool or City. We actually have the top talents in the country. All we need is a top-notch manager and 3/4 estabilished, world-class players. That's doable.

I only said we would be in a bad position if we keep LVG or replace him with Giggs. If Mourinho comes in this summer like you suggested then yes I think we are fine and will be back quickly.

Interesting article from Simon Stone. The main lines:

- Van Gaal thinks he could be allowed to finish his contract.
- Mourinho has told friends and associates that he has a verbal agreement with United, but no contract has been signed yet.
- The club is likely to speak to Mourinho in the near future.
- Charlton and Ferguson want Giggs as manager and the players would prefer Giggs over Mourinho as well.
- Woodward knows his reputation would take a blow if he sacks Van Gaal as he's taken responsibility for his appointment and they have a good relationship as well.

The last point is a bit confusing for me. Will Woodie's reputation not take a hit by not making a change and keeping on a failing manager? And will his reputation not be enhanced by making a change and getting someone competent in-charge?

The second last point makes zero sense either. They were apparently happy to ignore Giggs' requests last weekend to applaud the fans but want him as manager?!

Conclusion, the press know feck all

That is most certainly true. Every paper has covered nearly all obvious possibilities out this situation and simply regurgitate shit based on our result the previous game day. If we win - LVG to continue + Giggs to follow. If we lose - Jose on the way.

We won't know what the club plans to do until we are mathematically out of the top 4 running. If we don't hear from them by then: VG will most likely continue next season. Unless of course, if we are in the FA cup final, in which case we'll know their decision after the final.

Counting Leicester, Spurs, Arsenal, City, West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool:

4 defeats in 16 games, 6 wins, 6 draws. It's better than most SAF seasons I think, especially considering how poor the team is.
The problem with comparing it to SAF is that he'd comfortably take 75% of the points on offer against the lower league dross. We've dropped a serious amount this season and last season as well. You don't win the league beating the top four, you win it by beating the bottom 15.

I find it hard to object to Giggs at the minute. Then again I'd find it hard to object to a turd wearing a tiny tie and glasses as long as LVG is gone.
Then they should have had the guts to get rid of LvG and give him the job. Then the board have to say that if we are not in the Top 3 at Christmas you are gone.

What would also be interesting is his relationship with the media. He was only in charge for 4 games last time, so the press were really nice to him. Let's see what happens if he had a bad run and looks out of his depth and if one of them starts insinuating that it is Fergie running things not him. They will have their darlings Pep at City and Klopp at Liverpool so it won't take long for the knives to be out. Of course we will also be stuck with Rooney and Carrick for ever more.

I'm not really sure I understand what your point is. I do get you being upset about not needing to repeat to the n-th degree about how our standards have dropped. I also agree that there has been unfair scapegoating going on (some lambasting Blind, Herrera and so on [but definitely not Fellani cause he does suck]). That said, performances/achievements cannot be viewed in isolation and there surely must be a reference point to compare the performance of the players against some standard/metric? So when you are looking at Blind's season this year, you would say ok he's not done that bad being stuck playing CB but are we going to happy to keep playing him there next year? Of course not, and accepting his relatively good season as acceptable going forward would not be acceptable by United standards. I can't see how this is wrong?

The bigger question is of course, why can't LVG coax better and more consistent performances out of the players. Isn't that his job?

My point was that it is ridiculous to make up hypotheticals in which you would hope United lose, almost as bad as actively hoping United lose. I haven't been offended at all and I definitely do not regret criticising your foolish hypothetical situation.
Nothing foolish in what I said. I explained it to others and they were happy enough. As I said, I stand by what I said. Lets leave it there now.

Never mind years ago, I said earlier this season - when Klopp was available and about to go to Liverpool - that we should pay off LVG and hire Klopp. No one on here agreed at the time though as I think we were doing "OK" at the time.

The Klopp thing is particularly relevant not just because of the manner in which Liverpool won, and also how he displays passion for the game, a very real bond with the fans and inspired those players to do what they did last night.

Whereas we have the most uninspiring manager of all time who takes pride in boring our fans to tears, has no idea how to win by playing exciting football, and actively wants his players to resemble robots.

The real problem is the ownership of the club who allow this to continue and I think we all have to put up with not being valued for the future. Unless the Glazers are removed they are happy for the fans expectations to be last priority.

It looked to me like (and Woodward hinted at that very early on in the piece) Van Gaal was doing a Ajax/Barca-like rebuild of the club from the ground up. With an option for Giggs to take over somewhere along the line. For me, we've transported ourselves back to 1997 and we were at that point in his rebuild where he started last year. The problem is we had a manager who set the benchmark playing the way which became the cornerstone of English football. His style and the foundations he built were about things that are the polar opposite of rigid discipline. Freedom, expression and knowing how to man manage your biggest ego's is the biggest thing that we lost after SAF.

A re-build in Van Gaal's name that essentially didn't need to happen at all. That is the most disappointing part. I get that people are quite furious personally with him, if I was here I'd have been the outsider telling everyone this was on the cards. The guy is an egomaniac who would have never not-let the success be an obvious beacon of his management. From the start he showed he didn't really understand English football and where we are now is almost a direct result of that. He's shown very little in the way of adapting to meet the climate and that itself gives more weigh that it was a Van Gaal personal touches football "rebuild".

How the hell can't the board see this ffs...Why are we still hearing "Ah SAF and SBC don't like that" Why?!
I am not hearing it? Why? Because I am not forcing myself to read it. If you don't want to keep hearing a big round and round circlejerk in the media then don't read it. It is what they do to get your attention.

If we didn't have that blip in December where we lost against all the bottom teams back to back pretty much we would have been in the running. I think we took about 3 points from a possible 18 and went on a shocking run. Apart from that, we have not been too bad and the youngsters that are coming through have really made an impact.

Big injuries to key players has not helped and with as thin as the squad has been he has done well at the back end of the season.

Player management is an area of concern. I don't mind giving the youngster a slap around the ear if he is not doing well and giving them a good telling off. He is an old school manager and believes that young men have to work hard until they have made it. Personally, i think its a good thing. Footballers and fans might disagree today but thats the game changing. We will give players like Januzaj 40-60 grand a week for doing fek all and watch him sulk on the bench.

Does he need to go? Yes and no. The fact is, the club at the moment can't say no to Mourinho. LvG has one season left and we need to look past that.

I don't think he has done a bad job. I think in 5-6 years time, fans might appreciate what LvG did for this club a little more.

We've been so uninspiring do we even have key players outside of De Gea? Martial has done well but he's often one kid having to do it on his own and being crowded out. Smalling is our best defender, but that's kind of relative to everyone else. I find it hard to call any outfield player for us as he has gotten so little out of most of them with his weird tactics and dropping habits.

The problem is most fans want Maureen. A man that looked like death, was unable to inspire a dog to eat his food and almost overseen the worst slump from a championship winning team since god knows when! Zero passion from the guy apart from blaming everyone from medics to ...have I missed anything..

We purposely don't set out to manhandle and bully the smaller teams. That is what wins you league titles, that run included losses to promoted teams and teams finishing in the lower half of the table.
