It's possible he is the best goalkeeper we have ever had. The other two were unreal during much more successful periods. There is also obviously Alex Stepney from way back. But I can't think of any goalkeeper who has carried a team like this. He is easily the best keeper in the world.

Is he our best ever keeper? Discuss.

No idea but Schmeichel and VDS usually had a solid defence in front of them with good organisation.

Not saying our defenders have been shite under Dave but it's a night and day comparison to me. Dave definitely gives Schmeichel a challenge for equal, if not better, reflexes/shot stopping.

Where the goals come from.
I think he will be. The only things Pete has over him at the moment are longevity and silverware. If he stays (big if, obs) and gives us another couple of seasons of this it'll be beyond doubt... esp if he picks up a couple of trophies.

De Gea. The amount of chances we leak in astonishing. I know we've been poor for three seasons, however, that shouldn't be used as an excuse to play down De Gea. Incredible goal keeper.

I genuinely think he's better than big Pete. Best in the world. He is now commanding his area and baring down on strikers.

He's comfortably better than VDS. Less sure about Peter.

P4P he's better. Only legacy issue for Dave is the length of time he's with us.

Was too young to see Schmeichel to judge but I can't imagine how he could be better than Dave.

De Gea is the best for me. Still very young & he's never had the quality defenders in front of him. Pretty much guarantees a world-class save in every game he plays.

Voted the best city in the world
There are various facets of goalkeeping which would need to be considered. Reflexes and save wise, ddg is immense. Definitely the best. Organisation, leadership etc is between the other 2 - I'd probably give it to schmeichel.

But one things for sure - ddg will need to win the big accolades to be rated better than those guys. Unfortunately - no matter the talent we see week in and week out, the rest of the world will only recognize you for performing on the biggest of the biggest of stages. The UCL and WC's are where you cement your legendary status.

I think in terms of actual ability, he's the best. Where he falls behind big Pete for me is in presence and leadership. Schmeichel bullied defenders into being better players and scared the shit out of attackers. De Gea makes saves that I'm not sure even the great Dane would have managed but he's still very quiet and subdued behind the line.

On his day Schmeichel was untouchable, it's difficult to call though as DDG is playing in a relatively poor team, and Schmeichel played in a great team, so won a hell of a lot of trophies.

Better than VDS for sure. I haven't seen Peter for most of his career, and from the clips (and matches) he looks to have been amazing, full of charisma but also quite error-prone, something that De Gea isn't.

If De Gea continues like this, then by the end of his career he would be considered as one of the best keepers of all time. He just needs to stockpile some trophies in order to get the respect he deserves.

If De Gea wins the cup this year that will be the cup and the league. Not too bad. Probably about as much as you'd win playing for Real Madrid for 5 years.

This is his 5th year here, VDS stayed for 6 years while Schmeichel for 8. They hardly were Giggs/Scholes/Neville when it came to longevity.

Constantly at the STD clinic.
Consider De Gea's age. If something terrible like an injury or a Torres lack of form doesn't happen, De Gea will end up being a legendary goal keeper.

I never thought in my lifetime that Peter Schmeichel would be beaten but I actually think De Gea is at that level. Unbelievable Goalkeeper.

De Gea could go on to be the greatest keeper of all time if he played for Barcelona and was first choice for Spain. I hope for his sake he doesn't waste away his career at a side which isn't challenging for trophies. We owe it to him to sign a new manager and build a proper team which is worthy of his talents.

Schmeichel at his best was better for me, but that's looking at it in 2016. feck knows how much more De Gea will improve in the next few years.

Schmeichel made the defense in front of him solid. He organized it and kept it organized during the match.

DDG's reflexes are like Schmeichel and his error rate is like VDS. Perfection.

What Ive noticed about schmeichel from the clips I've seen is he saves half the goals scaring the shit out of the opposition (and sometimes our own) players who take the shot. His sheer presence seemed to terrify most people. Though I don't know if that was the case always as as I said I've only seen the clips. The first GK i had seen playing for United is Howard and since then de gea is comfortably the best.

He isn't as intimidating as Schmeichel, but De Gea is as good as a shot stopper as I've seen. VDS was brilliant too but I think De Gea will go on to be a better keeper than he was.

VDS was arguably better than Schmeichel at keeping his defences together. Schmeichel was more vocal, no doubt, but VDS was the organizer our strongest ever back five.

I've only experienced VDS but honestly think DDG is equal if not better. If we get the equivelant of Vidic/Ferdinand at their peak in front of Dave he might go to shite :)

Best of this generation for sure. Schmike's reflexes with VDS's kicking ability. He's even now starting to boss his area too. Far cry from the timid lad who came in from Spain in his first season.
