What will you do if LVG stays next season?

Even if he stays, it will only be 2/3 months until we are discussing his successor again anyway.

You'd think United will want a replacement lined up by January to succeed him after his retirement. Unless of course they really do just give it to Giggsy, which I doubt

If we end up 4th and win the FA cup and his end of season speech is this:

Then I'll survive one last season with him.

If he stays then I won't go out of my way to watch utd play. If it doesn't fit into my schedule then I wont shift things around to watch them as I would have. I'll certainly spend even less time here as the negativity to follow isn't worth my free time.

People are saying that we are now treated as customers rather than fans. Isn't the customer always right? Sack him.

what would be the attraction? Am genuinely interested. Im finding very few reasons at all to retain my interest.
I'm having a hard time trying to understand where you're coming from here mate.

I assume the attraction is to support your team. Being a football fan of any side means taking the good and the bad. And United fans have had it fecking brilliant for the best part of 25 years under Fergie so a few indifferent/average seasons in the grand scheme of things is nothing to cry too much about. Ffs we could still win a cup this year and maybe qualify for the CL, how many supporters wish their club could be in that position?

You support a football team not trophies or entertaining football. Yeah those things might attract us to a certain side and they are great to watch and experience, but neither are guaranteed for any club on the planet all the time.

If next season is the same as this with shite football etc., i'll continue to moan and criticize certain players and the manager just like the majority of us but i'll still watch. Because whats the alternative, start watching and/or supporting another team?

Not for me.

If he goes on another selling spree, I will quickly lose interest. Also if I keep seeing Rooney in the team, I will quickly lose interest.

I have been following United for 33 years and have never had any reason not to, until now.. I will follow United but going all in, watching every game, changing and chopping everything else to make United fit my life I won't .. I am sick and tired of LVG and his style, players struggle with it and we surely dont see much to like about it.

Other teams seem to do Ok with less than us as they seem to have a plan and a style to go with it. Spirit and fight is something that I feel is lacking and that for me is the key to me going all in. I could stand most of Moyes tries as he at least gave all he got, but LVG just seems to give us the finger. Booing didn't change anything as he felt it wasn't deserved as we were playing very well.

Just can't do this anymore I will follow United but not a chance that I will go all in as long as LVG is there, can't be bothered anymore. Watching United now is a terrible experience to say the least. No flair, heart or fight. Nothing new, nothing that wows you. But the saddest thing is this seems to have sank in by some as a period of rebuilding, Tottenham is rebuilding, Southampton too. They seem to do Ok and entertain their fans.
I won't go into details about what I don't like about LVG managerial style as it could take a while but what really bothers me is that he got praised for using youth but most of it was down to need nothing else.. Straight when the seniors got fit again the youth players got benched.. Rooney, Rojo ect ect..

With Mourinho available we would be crazy not going for him as LVG will be gone after one year but Mourinho will be too.

I will still follow United. As I don't have Sky Sports I can actually miss a lot of games. I am debating MUTV, but knowing me I will keep it. I watch BT on mute. I already watch other leagues anyway, so that wouldn't change. Would I support another team instead of United, never, ever. I like other teams along with United (more out of having someone to root for outside the PL) but could never dump United. They are the team I love beyond reason.

There is no great plan. He's been winging it since day one, that is obvious. He's stumbled upon some things that have worked and he's stuck with them for periods. Just enough to keep him safe.
You do realize Van Gaal is one of the most successful managers of the last 25 years. Sure he's most likely past his best and i am as outspoken as anyone on the many ways i think he's fecked the United job up.

But you speak about him as if he's some sort of clueless bluffer, he isn't he knows how to create successful sides and win major trophies. But it just hasn't worked out for him here, yes he's been unlucky with injuries but he's also made some major feck up mistakes especially with the squad that have us in our current position.

But none of that will change the fact he has been a great manager over the span of his entire career.

Yeah i watched a russian stream the other day instead of watching BT, jesus it's bad.

Look mate i didn't mean to suggest anyone who watches other teams is not a real fan or anything, i watch some spanish football myself always have.

But i couldn't stop watching United completely and watch other teams instead, that just seems wrong to me. One of my mates supports United but has stopped watching them, fair enough i thought because it's been hard to watch for large stretches. But he now watches Barca every week because he ''likes'' them and they play good football. So in my opinion he is now a Barca fan and the very definition of a glory hunter.

Maybe the club should rename Sir Matt Busby way to Ramsay Street to fall in line with the fans who seem to prefer reading the gossip rags and regurgitating everything from them as if it were gospel. I mean, the season has been atrocious football-wise so it could be a real earner for the club to profit on the drama addicted saddo's who read that garbage.
How is that pair of red tainted glasses working for you ?

Simply amazes me that people can still respect a guy like that and pretend that everything that he did just isnt true.

I will watch every match hoping and cheering for our victory.. I'll hope our performance becomes better along with our results..

I don't live in Manchester or UK, so can't say I won't go to the matches.. I have been watching and supporting United for 20 years now and I have probably missed about 10 games in 20 years watching them live on telly, so can't see that changing..

I still hope we have a change in manager and hopefully LvG goes out after us securing Top 4 and FA Cup.. If he does end up staying, I hope and pray he does better and we have better luck with some injuries..

No way in hell I'll hope we lose or not watch us if he stays as manager.. It's been tough to watch us this year, but I still sit down for every game hoping we win.. That's not gonna change just because I want the manager gone..

the ones that say I wont watch again , because they are not winning or not playing well or dont like the manager, well sorry I say GOOD.
Its OK wanting your team to win trophy's all the time and play well and hammered teams all the time , but United have been in this situation before and worse, I remember getting relegated and it was bad.
You follow your team thought good times and bad, if you want to jump ship then , United is not your team.

Not too sure why the sex addict part concerns people so much, but the only things anyone can do is either stop being a fan or continue being a fan. Unless you have a few billion quid lying about the buy the club of course.

I'll probably do the same as everyone else, watch matches when I can, not bother buying tickets until things are looking up and complain like hell on here when we're still playing this boring-ass football and under performing next season. The only way out is another squad re-build, because the one we have here (which has only just been built) doesn't work. Regardless of what manager we have, that's not a quick thing to do and is never a guarantee for success.

Yea ofcourse you support a football team, but why do you support them ?

That reason is different for every fan. Myself I am not from manchester, I got no links to united that my family has been united supporters for generations or anything of that kind. I started supporting united for SAF, who is a unique trainer, being at one club for such a long time, I loved the attitude his teams had, pure winning mentality that led to great success even if the football wasnt always the best or even if we didnt have the most exciting players. I loved the passion and DNA of the club.

For me that passion and DNA dont disappear because we are struggling and play bad football. It also doesnt disappear because SAF isnt the trainer anymore or because there arent many of his old players in the team anymore. I dont care too much about any of that. What I do care about is what standards the club gives itself, the ambition, the way it wants to operate as a club in the market and on the pitch for its fans.

SAF always held this club to the highest standards if we didnt achieve them he would move heaven and earth until we'd do. You compare that to LVG, not only does he have us play way below the standard. He is actually happy about it, he is content about his achievements and his rethoric is that fans have unrealistic expecations and that they should be lowered. That kind of reasoning for me is unacceptable, it couldnt be further away from the United DNA, the united soul that is the core reason I support this club.

If the club is content with such a clown as a manager, if they dont mind the standard is being consistently lowered, if they dont mind the United DNA and SAF legacy gets well and truely burried. Than I ask you wtf is there left to support for me ?

But perhaps the question was is it possible to support another team, because the club you loved lost its DNA or has lost its way completely and even if it seems there is no way back possible, in the sense that you start actively wishing another team to win against Utd.

Someone needs to explain to LVG, that if you don't have the players for your system then it's stupid to look to dominate and create one chance because we are not clinical enough currently. We spent half a season doing nothing. If he stays then he will need to turn water into wine and walk on water to change my opinion of him. I'm not anti Giggs taking over - but we would need to be signing game changers (if he knows that's what we need). Else his system is self defeating. No excuses. We cannot go through another season, worrying about opponents. It sends out completely the wrong message. The number of goals we've scored and the number of chances created - is quite frankly a joke. Leicester and the like, have no problems creating chances and it's not just by direct football - it's because they are POSITIVE

That is difficult to answer. It is like asking somebody if they could fall in love again after their lifelong partner died. It is not unthinkable and it depends on what happens at other clubs if you could dig that or not.

I for one could never support a club like PSG, City or Chelsea because they are complete plastic clubs. I could never support Real Madrid because they are a complete circus whose success is largely build on a history with the Franco regime. Bayern and Barca I respect but they are so mainstream and I just dont think I could ever really folow a different league than the PL which is the main problem Id have with supporting an Italian team. If there would ever be a team like Dortmund or Atletico in the PL than it could happen but obviously Liverpool is ruled out because that would just be against everything that I used to love about united.

Leicester is doing an amazing job. If united is stupid enough to hold on to LVG or give the crown to Giggs, I could swap my interest for a season to Leicester or Tottenham and see if it sticks. But Id always want United to do well, so supporting against them is something I could never do. But I really hope the club gets to its senses and fires that clown LVG so we can start a new (and without Giggs)

You can't 'lose' DNA. To continue your comparison - the DNA is intrinsic to the being and I feel it is with United too. I might not like Van Gaal but we're still United under all the issues and I'll support even more at times like this

Yes, if you could do such swapping, good for you. I mean there are no guarantees of everything becoming cozy and nice, if Jose or anyone else takes over. We could be as bad as now or even worse. Many people would find it difficult to pick another team because Utd have lost their levels.

I'll still be a United fan, I'll just have lost a bit of confidence/faith in the club itself.

Older United fans will know that they stayed loyal during Docherty, Sexton and Big Ron's reigns.

Not a lot in reality. Just avoid watching more games probably which tbf I've already been doing this season.

I was in Norwich on Saturday and still didn't watch the game. Spoke to a United fan in a pub later that day who'd been at the match and his description of our football was "insipid". Which i thought was a great word considering he was drunk.

I don't think people are moaning about the recent lack of trophies, they're moaning because all the good work done by Fergie is being undone by incompetent management, and people are assisting this incompetence by lowering their own standards.

I'd also suggest that, while you don't pick your side based on entertaining football, you're within your rights to reduce the amount of time and money you spend following your team if the football is terrible. If the team keeps churning out godawful games like the Norwich one, I'll find it hard to justify building my weekend around watching the games.

Could you elaborate on the difference between the two things I have highlighted?

You wouldnt stop supporting United because they are not playing well. But you would if it doesnt have sufficient ambition?

So this all hinges on doubts you have about whether the club actually wants to be at the top? If so, what evidence do you have that we lack that ambition? We have spent plenty of money in recent years. This cant all be because the club havent sacked Van Gaal fast enough? If this is what it hinges on, we could be weeks away from a resolution on that score. Doesnt this all feel a bit premature? I find it odd that people can be questioning our standards and ambitions at this stage. We are going through a bad spell at the moment but these things happen, it doesnt mean the club has given up.

I might have completely misinterpreted what you are saying but if I understood you it feels like you are being unbelievably impatient. A couple of bad years, despite spending a load of money, and 6 months of delay and not sacking an underperforming manager, and fans conclude that the team no longer has ambition. I mean, Im not immune to questions about the club's ambition myself - it has certainly occurred to me that our owners might find The Arsenal Model quite attractive, and if that proves to be the case I will be critical of that. But at this stage isnt the official explanation also the simpler and more obvious one? That we are going through a bit of a transitional phase (this is literally true if you look at our squad turnover which has been unprecedentedly high) and are rebuilding and we have to trust that things will improve?

I guess my question is, what is the evidence for this lack of ambition? What tells you the club is not setting high enough standards? There must be more than keeping Van Gaal in place. I mean, if it was next season and he was still there Id say you had the beginnings of a point - though even then Id say you were being impatient. But here, in May, with speculation rife that Mourinho is coming in, Van Gaal will leave, where is this concern coming from?

I think he would do well next year providing we get lucky with injuries (specifically Schweinsteiger and Shaw) and add a top attacker.

Im not so sure, but he certainly might. Which is why, as much as I hope we do let him go, if we dont it certainly isnt decisive evidence that the club lacks ambition (further to the point I am making in the post above yours.)

I tend to agree. Lvg has made his fair share of mistakes in terms of tactics/formations/handling players etc, but he has been further hurt by injuries and the lack of a bonafide goal scorer. Even if we just had the latter, we could've gained another 10-15 points and challenged for the league. He took a massive gamble on selling RvP, Nani, Rafa, and Chicharito without adequately replacing them, which hurt us immensely.

I think I would continue to support my team, focus on the positives of LVG (and there are a number of them) and carry on with my life without doing anything too drastic over who is managing a football club

This comes back to the old debate about modern fans being treated like consumers. If they are treated like consumers for long enough they'll start to act accordingly. I think we're seeing that here.
There would be some sort of poetic justice (a grim sort) to that: Treat them like customers, and have them abandon you en masse as the “product” becomes inferior.

I'm not sure to what extent this will actually happen, though. Most United fans I know personally won't ever abandon the club in the sense that they'll start endorsing another “product”. They may feel less enthusiastic about United, but that's as far as it goes.

In other words, as far as genuine fans (people who have an emotional tie to the club – let's put it like that) are concerned, I can't believe they will walk out on the club, customer style, simply because they're fed up with LVG and/or the current brand of football.

Looking over my shoulder.
There's a silver lining to LVG staying; I will get much more time on my hands. Moreover, considering what football has become, maybe that is truly a blessing in disguise. I love the game, but there is so much about football now that annoys me. When United play like a hung over pub team on top of that, I'm starting to lose interest. People may think that is about winning, but it's not. Some of the best games can be played with United drawing or even losing, but at least that makes your heart race a little faster. Watching this team under this management play, I always find something else to do whilst watching the game, and lately I don't bother going out of my way watching matches. Next year, I will cut my subscription for PL football - it is too expensive for too little entertainment. So, LVG is giving me more time and more money to spend. Not bad really.
