Stay, as a midfielder, which Jose says he isn't. If he was to be put up for sale, apart from China, I don't think there would be a queue to buy him, unless he was willing to take a huge drop in wages.
Last season? Yeah he was as i've already said woeful in the first half of the season. Did the Stoke game give him the kick up the arse he needed and help him regain form yeah maybe. How about under LVG? He was the worst player on the pitch almost every game when he thought he was undroppable, but as soon as he gets dropped he finds some acceptable form?
Because our love for United trumps meaningless sentimentality .Why would anyone want a legend to go?
Theres a reason for that. Our highest paid player hasnt been convincing since his mid twenties. Its frustrating because everyone recognises that he's almost certainly going to finish as our record goalscorer but its impossible to ignore the fact that we pay him messi, ronaldo, neymar money but even at his peak he wasnt at that level.I swear this thread has happened every year since about 2010
That's what really hurts the most, the wacking fortune he's on versus performances on the pitch. Still willing to wait and see if Jose can get him singing again, but this must now be last chance saloon.Theres a reason for that. Yeah, and the thing is we wouldnt need to have this conversation if he was on the kind of money scholes was on which was reasonable but he's not, he's on five times as much and you cant ignore that. You cant have someone coasting when he gets paid the gross domestic product of a small country. That's what really hurts the most, the wacking fortune he's on versus performances on the pitch. We should also get rid of him for that alone.Sorry but to me this feels like yet another, let's get rid of Rooney thread. Enough of those surely, mods?
No not performance wise but from a marketing point of view he's probably as or at least close to as valuable as any of those (although I've no idea why...something about his weird shaped head seems to work).Theres a reason for that. At the same age (30-31) Scholes was on around £75-80k per week at United he was one of our highest earners along with the likes of Giggs and Keane both of whom were also in their 30's.Yeah, and the thing is we wouldnt need to have this conversation if he was on the kind of money scholes was on which was reasonable but he's not, he's on five times as much and you cant ignore that. This site has bold character. We go again.I swear this thread has happened every year since about 2010
Not really comparable for me. Those were rolling one year contracts for players who didn't have agents. Players who could still contribute. Players in a more limited role who did not demand to start every game. Players who took care of themselves and earned a fraction of what Rooney makes. At the same age (30-31) Scholes was on around £75-80k per week at United he was one of our highest earners along with the likes of Giggs and Keane both of whom were also in their 30's.
By demanding that wage Rooney forfeits the right to have the same excuse as players who earn four times less than that. The club's relationship with him is basically prostitutional - I'm sure those who hire whores won't stand for them to be on the period on the night in question. Rooney's performances since that contract was signed haven't been up to standard, surely you accept that its different from overpaying for a player who would definitely strengthen us!Love it how people have a problem with us paying a player 45m over next 3 years but bring the excuse up "It's not our money anyway" argument if we are to shell 100m on a player, which is directly strengthening your rivals financially.
And, yes he wasn't good, but even if he wasn't on our books any of the last 3 seasons, we were million miles away from winning the league. Also, if we don't win PL next season, I'm pretty sure, he won't be the sole/ main reason for it. There'd be mistakes made from each player which could be pointed just as easily
He's veen very poor this season and his occasional good patches of form dont warrant him a starting place at United, besides that, even if he got benched, paying one player far more than others who actually are performing is just weird, we dont have an umlited wage budget, his wage could be used for players who actually deserve it. The Scholes/Giggs comparisojn, I dont understand. They were 10x the players at that age, Rooney currently is. While Rooney weakens the team, theybwere still valuable starters and had their hand in our succes's.Uh, thats what the odd game means though mate. After Xmas and either side of his injury he was ok and at times good for us. Yes he was atrocious before Xmas but he's only been that bad twice in his career i doubt he will be that bad next year. He's not the player he was and probably never will be, but neither were Giggs, Keane, Neville, Ferdinand or Scholes once they got into their 30's didn't mean they weren't be valuable squad members. Rooney can follow suit, he also has vast experience which is always good to have around the squad.
His wages are irrelevant, he is paid what he was worth at the time his contract was signed both on and off the pitch. He is very valuable to the club commercially more so than most if not all of the squad so that off sets some of his salary.
Honestly i don't understand this obsession some have with how much Wayne Rooney is paid who gives a feck? United could pay him £1m per week and it wouldn't put a dent in their ability to sign other players, ffs we are prepared to pay £100m for one player and pay his agent €25m just to set it up. Money is not a problem for United at this time.
Why would it be any different with Mourinho, same was being said with van Gaal, who supposedly was ruthless, but yet my captain shall always play, not to mention the English media who pressure our manager once you touch the golden boy.If people want him to leave due to his performance, half of the team should go with him.
If it is because of his wage, it is irrelevant. His wage is more due to his longevity and marketability which in my opinion, he deserves it.
If you want him to leave because of him being untouchable, I truly think that it is not a case with Mourinho. If he plays Rooney, it is because he believes Rooney can play well.
All in all, I voted stay. I don't even see how he is actually weaken the team, as we are not better when he was not in the team. But if we do signed Pogba it would be interesting what Mourinho will do as Pogba is better as #10 IMO.
If that player is someone who actively strengthens the team and would bring United back to the top (I dont think Pogba is tbh, that is a Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar player fee), I'd much rather prefer that then a player who is more of a hindrance, just like Gerrard. Because of his past career heights, being guaranteed a place whilst he is far from good enough. Smalling, Blind, Mata, Lingard, Valencia when he recoved where easily better than Rooney over the course of the season. Rooney has been our worst player in so many matches.Bloody hell. So many want him gone and bang on about his wages yet will no doubt support spending 100 million pounds on a player.
Take out the fact his name is Wayne Rooney, take out his age, take out the fact he's not as good as he was 5 years ago. Just watch him in the United team as a blank canvass and then decide whether he is good enough.
In my opinion he along with Martial and De Gea was one of our most talented players in our line up.
Sadly too many people on here can't see past form, age and how much he earns, and can't see past media agendas.
I thought Rooney did well in the last couple of games where he was played in a deeper role? Especially in the last two FA cup games where he really played his heart out and did exceptionally well despite playing in his unnatural position and contributed greatly to our wins. He also had a run of good games in the beginning of 2016, scoring 7 goals and recording 3 assists from his 9 matches between January to February, before succumbing to a knee injury. He is also a seasoned captain and an experienced leader, something that we still lack in the dressing room (not yet counting on Ibra and Schweinsteiger who just recently joined).
I was honestly surprised to read many people here wanting to see him gone. Rooney is still a good player. He will be a first team player for City, Arsenal and Chelsea for sure. The only logical reason for us to sell him is if United is in a bad shape financially. Otherwise, I am of the opinion that we should keep him for at least another season and see how Mourinho would utilize him.
It's absolutely mental that our fans still believe those things.
I really need some of what @26andahalfyears is smoking
Roon is legend... he needs to end his career here at United...
None of those players were on rolling contracts at Rooney's age.Not really comparable for me. Those were rolling one year contracts for players who didn't have agents..
So does Rooney 15 goals last season and 6-7 assists.Players who could still contribute.
Where has Rooney said he demands to play every game? Its a myth.Players in a more limited role who did not demand to start every game.
They were some of the highest earners in the league just like Rooney, wages have inflated thats not the players fault.Players who took care of themselves and earned a fraction of what Rooney makes.
Sorry mate thats absolute horseshit. At 29-30 Giggs was having such a bad patch of form there were people Booing him at OT. Think about that one, have you heard anyone at OT booing Rooney? He's veen very poor this season and his occasional good patches of form dont warrant him a starting place at United, besides that, even if he got benched, paying one player far more than others who actually are performing is just weird, we dont have an umlited wage budget, his wage could be used for players who actually deserve it. Look at the standard back then and the standard right now, now fans are basically content with playing Fellaini, Schweinsteiger, Darmian, Carrick etc, enough fans have boo'ed Rooney tbh this season. And did Giggs earn roughly the same amount as world best players at that time? Likes of Ronaldinho, Zidane, Figo etc? Rooney does , but isn't even half the player.Sorry mate thats absolute horseshit. At 29-30 Giggs was having such a bad patch of form there were people Booing him at OT. Think about that one, have you heard anyone at OT booing Rooney?
Only later did Giggs rediscover some form and play well again. But he had a few ropey years around 30.
Again Rooney's wage will not affect potential signings United could comfortably pay him 4x times what they currently do and it would make no difference. Him being on the bench and earning more than most of the squad is nothing to worry about.
Giggs also earned more than most of the squad when he was a bit part player in his 30's. No one complained as far as i know.
He can play behind Aguero and in between Silva (L) and De Bruyne (R) at City.
