He's without a doubt a United legend but he wouldn't make my all time Best 11... then again, neither would Rio, Giggs, Keane, Beckham, Robson, Law, Van Der Sar and plenty of other legends.

Fantastic achievement without a doubt, right up there with Giggs setting the all-time appearances record. Let's hope he gets the record outright tomorrow.

Heres the thing with Rooney certain views just won't be changed for some people. The City thing for example it doesn't matter that Rooney said he had no intention of going to City at the time or that Mancini had said there was nothing to it and that City had no contact with Rooney or even that Ferguson released a pretty revealing autobiography in 2013 when he and Rooney were not on the best of terms and there wasn't a so much as a peep about Rooney wanting to go to City or nearly joining them in 2010.

Some people will remain convinced Rooney nearly joined City.
This and the fact that Rooney came out IN PERSON and apologized multiple times to the club, to the fans, the players, and the manager. He didn't just release a press statement, he said it in video interviews. It's easy to engineer a move behind the scenes, hidden from limelight, through your agent or something. It's probably equally difficult to come out and admit you made a mistake and say you're sorry. I am not sure why this fact is lost on our own fans? What more do you expect? Him to cut off his arm and offer it to the club?

Also, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever he pushed for a move a second time. And his conduct post that accusation by Fergie has been great. Remember when the Caf was going mental with ridiculous statements like Rooney has a clause in his contract to start, he had the press in his pockets etc.? Didn't it turn out it was all LVG? Didn't the press stop backing him? His 300k-a-week was such a big thing used to beat him up here. We sign Pogba for 90m and all the talk about money is forgotten.

We'd have no hero's or legends if attempting to leave for more money was a critical benchmark of a players status. I think that is just a lazy dig for the sake of it, lots of our players used contracts at other clubs as bargaining chips for their wages. Even Keane says he was on the verge of accepting an off from Inter and Juventus before the club upped what was on the table and he signed it.
You cant see the difference between putting in a transfer request the day before a Champions League game and bargaining for more money? You're entitled to negotiate whatever you want. The way he went about it was terrible and actually quite typical of his character. The Roy Keane thing couldnt have been more different.

That wasn't the case though he put in his transfer request in August before the season even started according to Ferguson. It was made public by Ferguson the day before a champions league game. In Ferguson's latest book he says he doesn't think the transfer request and wanting to leave in 2010 was a ploy by Rooney to get more money. What it was about was Rooney wrongly trying to stick his nose into the clubs transfer policy and him being unimpressed with the clubs signings.

Suppose you and he fell out pretty sizable after that little incident then? Tell us more about his character, you seem to have an insight? What is he like away from the pitch? Seems a pretty humble down to earth guy the few times I've met him off the pitch. Like I said. So many of our players have done it - we'd have had no legends if that was enough to strike them from the record.

Sounds more feasible to be honest, well said.

Whatever people might think about Rooney, I've always respected him for the way he has handled his demotion from regular starter. No histrionics, tantrums or upsetting the apple cart. Yeah so his performances have dipped recently and he can be infuriating to watch at times now, but he will always be a legend. It's not like he doesn't put a shift in whenever he's on the pitch unlike Ozil or van Persie in his last season. He always tries his best, sometimes it just doesn't come off.

But what better way to cement his status in history with the winning (record-breaking) goal against the Dippers tomorrow. We're nailed on for a peno anyway.

This makes so little sense.
Coleen is still with him so has obviously forgiven him, it shouldn't bother you what he does off the field once he does it on the field. Wouldn't care he hes riding my neighbour score the winner tomorrow i might let him hop the wall :smirk:

Maybe, to those with the intellectual capacity of a 14 year old.
You're talking as if he actually cheated on you? That's what doesn't make any sense. You need to let it go, fella.
I answered a question. I dont hold it against him, thus dont have to forgive him. I was asked about his character and gave an example accordingly. Didnt expect so many peoples feelings to be hurt on this subject.

.

So when asked about his wider character the best thing you can come up with is something from 8 years ago, which those directly affected by have gotten over.

Seems to be reaching a bit to me.

Give it a rest, please. This is shitting the thread up more that than a usual Wayne Rooney thread, which takes some doing. Although the idea that "it happened 8 years ago and you cant have an opinion on ones character because those involved are over it" is quite laughable. Are standards that low in football that "it was something that happened 8 years ago" is a defense a critique on somebody?

Erm, yes, unless you believe that people should forever be judged for every questionable decision they ever make.
