the ill concealed glee of us conceding
Isn't it just standard? The giant concedes, of course the broadcaster is excited. It's better for them to have a contest than the bigger side stride to a 4-0 thumping.

All big teams have to contend with this type of hysteria.

I'm not convinced that is a live commentary from Hargreaves. There are so long pauses between his sentences, like they are selecting which quote to use from him.

Loved it after the game when Scholesey agreed they could win 3 cups and finish 4th, Knobhead Robble Savage said "or win no cups and finish 6th", Scholes came back with "Did you ever mange to finish 6th?"

Oh come on, stuff like this is so RAWKish.

Commentators have been getting excited about the underdog scoring against the big boys since football was televised.

Utd fans should know this better than anyone.

Agree with this. While I like NBC and Sky better all the commentators love a cup upset so do fans if they don't support the team being upset.

Totally fine with supporting English teams in Europe but the commentary is hideously biased.

They've retained Champions League and Europa League rights until the end of the 2020/21 season.

£1.2bn...! The feckers can afford to give me a pay rise!

Soon as bt started I cancelled my sky sports and use other means to watch what I want. BT were saying when it started how great it was for the regular fan now having the option of two platforms to watch footy but by having champions league on bt and the pick of the prem on sky it just means you need both. Unless you get bt sports free then it in no way benefits fans having coverage spread over two stations instead of one.

Of course sky has always had it faults but at least you knew you were paying for one package and getting all the available football in the Uk.

Yeah it's hilarious when it's argued it increases "competition".

The only way you increase competition is by banning exclusive rights packages, so multiple channels hold the rights to the same matches and then compete on price and quality of coverage

Cancelled my BT broadband subscription to move to Plusnet the other week. The rep on the phone reminded me that I'd lose access to BT Sport, I said that was all the more reason to transfer. :)

It's cheeky as feck to suggest that paying for two subscriptions is 'great for the fan'. To have both costs around £100 per month all in. To get BT Sport for free or discounted, you already need to be paying for BT's rather expensive broadband service. To add it to Sky, you need to be paying for a basic Sky package as a minimum. You literally can't just have Sky Sports and BT Sport and nothing else, via Freeview for instance. You have to have and pay for A Sky/BT platform beneath it. It's a lot of money.

And for that money, you still cannot watch every Premier League game. It's usually 3 or 4 games, out of 10. Is that great for the fan too?

Honestly, who enjoys Champions League nights anymore after BT got the rights to them?

I wish there was some way for NBC to get the rights to them.

Not me. I've actually gone off watching Champions League football ever since BT got the rights. I had BT sport for about a year but I got rid of it a while ago because it's over priced and the coverage is dog shit. Back when ITV had the CL rights I could just sit down and enjoy any CL game that was on. Now I have to watch on my PC via reddit soccer streams. It's just not the same without ITV. Even Sky covered Champions League better than BT and at least that was a shared thing with ITV.

English broadcasters are going to be biased towards the English clubs.

Have you ever watched a Spanish or Italian club play v an English one in their countries? It's exactly the same.

I am not saying it's right - but it's not exclusive to BT. Commentary was biased on ITV and Sky.

No one was complaining when Clyde Tyldesly was orgasming live on air when we scored the winner against Bayern in 99.

Precisely, CL nights were special at our house even if United weren't playing it just felt more prestigious watching it on ITV & Sky. Their coverage was much better.
BT has just cheapened the entire experience, I don't care to watch it now.

I know I'm probably looking back with rose tinted spectacles but staying up on a school night watching Utd (even cheering on Arsenal and other English clubs) in the champions league on itv in the 90s was so much better. Bob Wilson presenting. The music and spectacle of it all. A chance to see foreign player's and teams up close (on a 14 inch grundig tv). Don't get me started on football italia on channel 4!

The FA Cup and CL coverage/spectacle is dire now.

Either that or I am getting old and not as interested anymore.

I hate the modern footballer. But that's a discussion for another time and place.

It's crap on BT, I watch used to watch every game I possibly could but I rarely go out of my way to watch it now. It ruins the spectacle for everyone because BT viewership isn't anywhere near what it would be on ITV or Sky. People aren't talking about European football like they used to, because of BT. The subscription price will increase because of this too no doubt.

The spectacle is completely gone now, even when they show the final for free there's hardly any buzz or advertising. It doesn't help that for most away matches they sit in that empty warehouse of a studio when ITV usually made the effort to be there, even if it meant dodging a few sprinklers on the pitch during the build up chat.

Those were the days. I feel the same (although i never supported any other English team). Champions League doesn't even feel that special to me anymore in truth, probably because the amount of international games etc.

Couldn't agree more. Clive Tyldesley on commentary even made it special but now we're stuck with the likes of Fletch and pundits like Owen Hargreaves rather than the likes of Roy Keane. Sad times.

That's disappointing news. BT have sucked the life out of the CL. BT just make it feel like another PL game. Sure people will add the fact United haven't been main players in comp for 4 or 5 years but even when United got knocked out early when on ITV/Sky I'd still get excited for a game.

Guardian reporting that sub licensing games to likes of ITV , Channel 4 likely to be explored. But BT are pushing the exclusive line so who knows.

I don't hate Jake he was good on F1 but I can see why people don't like him.

Their coverage has completely sucked the life out of what made Champions League football special. I'd rather watch games on a shitty foreign stream than be forced to put up with their cheapened product.

The commentary, the presentation, the pundits, the analysis etc everything about that channel is complete & utter trash.

Used to watch all the ITV games and when freeview went HD that was fantastic. Was hoping for a return but this new deal is worse as ITV won't even show highlights now.

BT has killed CL for me. Even if I had the money I'd feel sad paying for the atrocious coverage.

So much for the talk of falling viewers. Money talks.

I always watched the Goals Show with James Richardson and Co during the group stages. Now that is enjoyable, but the people on it are actually educated.

Just like how F1 used to be exciting and enjoyable to watch back in the day on the BBC Listening to Murray Walker, watching Champions League games used to be an occasion you looked forward to. Now both of them are over analysed and too gimmicky to enjoy anymore, they've killed the experience for the average viewer which is probably why I don't bother watching them any longer.

Weren't Uefa talking about taking the rights away from them as the arse had fell out of the ratings compared to itv/sky and they had sponsors complaining?

Seeing the same matches every year is killing the competition. The FA cup has more variety in the latter rounds

Yeah. Its like theyve picked the two people who are literally the opposite of what a commentator/pundit should be. If theyre spending all this money on the rights i dont know why theu dont go all out on getting in the top pundits too (whoever they may be).
