I don't really see whats to dislike about Ed Sheeran, he comes across humbly and his music, even if you don't like it, is inoffensive enough not to be annoying.

He's also really talented.
I think he comes across as a bit of a dick, in a harmless way, and I didn't think his first album suggested he was particularly talented. It was like listening to a bunch of songs written by a lovesick 10 year old who's overly desperate to get girls to like him. If anything it's slightly infuriating that more talented musicians get overlooked for this sort of thing.

His hair also looks like what mine used to look like when I was a f*cking moron.

I haven't listened to the new album yet, but if it's suddenly significantly improved, I would suspect foul play. He also contributed to that unnecessary butchering of Watchtower, which can not be forgiven under any circumstance.

Though he is a ginger and a musician so despite all that, I kind of have to accept him as a martyr for the cause.

Ok, I've given the new album a listen.

That's two entire albums now where he's basicaly just written the same song over and over again about his fantasy of being some uber sensitive womaniser who smokes weed whilst sitting on a couch a lot.

If he actually started writing songs about things he could be good, but as it is, sorry but he's just fecking boring. Soul music with no soul.

I did like that Hobbit song he did though. I'd forgotten about that.

That hooker song he wrote was so cringey. He annoys me. His stilted personalities range from doe-eyed good boy who loves every girl with a broken heart to cool stoner who "is not you, no, that would be disastrous".

Also his hair is purposely tousled in a way that looks like it took hours and he looks like a cnut. And I just heard that Watchtower thing and oh my God, poor Bob.

Yeah that's a bit of a disappointment. I think his new album is certainly more mature, but I thought that it'd be a lot more lyrically evolved. Especially considering that 'I see fire' is pretty solid lyrically. I still think that there's a few good songs on the album regardless though.

It all just sounds so forced. He can't sing about anything other than the person he likes to think he is inside his own head. No one cares...doubly so when you're some mega rich pop star. It just makes it apparent that you must have been even more boring before you became one.

And trust me from past experience...when you're ginger, fat, and look like you've never had a wash, no amount of singing and showing off with a guitar can make every girl you meet want you to bone them. So stop fecking singing about it.

"I See Fire" is excellent to be fair. Imagine if he actually did an album where there were no songs about himself. It could be really good.

That one where he's on about a women's body is one of the worst songs I've ever heard, seems like a decent guy but his music is bollocks.

He's a cnut...in one of his songs, he's going on about all his old school friends and how much he misses them, etc...

then he goes "One's barely getting by"...you're a fecking multi millionaire, help your mate out you cnut...

So he ended up getting all his 16 album songs in the top 19 singles. The UK charts are an absolutely farse. Which buffoon decided that 150 streams equals 1 sale?

From what I've heard he just seems monumentally average. And average really fecking sells.

His early stuff was great. No. 5 Collaborations was really good and fresh at the time.

This new album is as generic as it gets, and feels like his crack at America. It will probably work as well, so fair play to him. He's doing what he has to to be financially secure.

The guy gets an entire album in the top 20 and is called average. C'mon people, you can not like him but it's pretty obvious he's a talented musician

The music is totally average. Selling average music to people who like average music in massive quantities isn't though.

It's this "he's a nice guy" stuff that annoys me. How can you KNOW that?

This is a guy who's worryingly obsessed with writing songs about himself...and not songs about stuff that's happened or his experiences, just songs, about himself, and why you should love him. When he performs, he comes out with a guitar, and he plays on is own, and he sings on his own. He doesn't allow anyone else on stage like other solo artists do. He'd rather sit there looping his own guitar, and then looping himself banging on his own guitar to make a drum sound, than have backing performers or artists. He isn't amazingly good at guitar, so it's not part of the act. It's just that he doesn't want anyone on stage performing with him. He stops mid set to point out that "this is all me" to make sure everyone knows no one else is on stage with him.

What does this tell you about whether he's a nice guy or not? He might be...he might be a nice guy who's just horribly insecure about himself despite being a world famous musician, but you don't know him, so you don't know.

I read something on Facebook once called "the 10 most interesting facts about Ed Sheeran"...it was written by someone annoyed at people calling him boring. One of the facts was that his father was an art historian...literally the most boring fact I've ever read about anyone. Another was that he once stole a bottle of peri peri sauce from Nandos. If I did that I wouldn't tell anyone, because it's so pointless and uninteresting. You can get it in any shop for like a pound. He clearly isn't a very interesting person, which is probably partly why he can't write songs about interesting things.

He writes catchy tunes (apparently) and has made a huge success out of it. Fair play, no one can argue that, but stop this nonsense. Stop role modelling people as human beings just because they wrote a song you like. Jackk White wrote some songs I like...he's still a fecking mental bellend

Not a fan of his but I must admit he did come across as a nice bloke in an interview on TV last week.

They don't know it. Most people say "seems" or "comes across as". You're the one with the oddly strong opinion on the matter. It seems.

I think he's talented and his stuff sounds nice, unengaging and easy to consume. Most people like that, these days. His songs are forgettable and unimpressive but perfect for the radio or background music.

How does he "seem" like a nice guy though? I mean as compared to other artists or musicians who you could also say "seem" like nice guys? Which is bout 99% of them.

People are always pointing it out with Ed Sheeran, as if it's some massively important trait of his. It's almost like because he's ginger they feel some need to still pity him in some way.

It's because he doesn't look like a traditional pop star and, like you said, is incredibly boring. These people are usually defined by their looks and personality. He has neither, so all that's left to say is he's a nice guy.

I'm not a massive fan of his but it seems the majority of the UK would deem your music choice average. You're in the minority pal.

That's fine. The majority of the UK also loves Gary Barlow and voted Brexit. I'll gladly take the minority.

Then you accept he's not average, you just don't like his brand of music.:)

His achievements aren't average. His music is totally average. Maybe I'm missing something and he isn't just a dead-eyed, bland troubadour. If so, what is his stand out quality? What should I be listening for?

Mada me chuckle.

Music exists to be enjoyed, as he's able to entertain the masses he must be pretty good at it, right?

People like him because they see him as relateable. He's not your typical looking pop star or some weirdo, he just comes across like a normal person IMO.

I'm not doubting his ability to entertain the masses, I'm doubting his ability to make anything other than average music.

One of the things people seem to always champion about him is his normality. He's just one of us plebs, only with much worse hair, a sinister smile and a guitar. Isn't normal just a synonym for average?

Anyway, I should cork it now, before I go fully music-Nazi. I do get what you're saying though. This generation needed its David Gray, now he's here.
