What a bunch of cry babies.

Those who are trying to twist Mckenzie's comments to be a racial slur are beyond pathetic. Ross Barkley is white and his tiny bit of Nigerian heritage is news to most, it seems. This was just a case of a tabloid journalist comparing a footballer to a gorilla....and for good reason. If you don't want to be compared to gorilla, don't drag your knuckles and walk around with your mouth open like a gormless ape.
There are some things you can always count on on the Caf.

Despicable article. Is it racist? We'll probably never know the intention behind likening Barkley to a gorilla - whether he knew this before writing the article or whether he had no idea like many of us. Assuming he did know this, then of course it's racist.

Liverpool used be known as a city where a sense of humour and self depreciating parody thrived. Now it is just a depressing hellhole full of bleeding heart, melodramatic victims who are offended by everything. I can't believe the mayor has actually made a complaint to the police...maybe he should be focusing on his city's awful crime and social problems instead of exploiting non-existent racism for publicity.

So does my bro-in-law, but he's half-African. His 'looks' are irrelevant.
If exterior appearance is irrelevant to racial identity, then what exactly does that imply? It implies that racial labels (such as black, mixed race, white etc) carry deeper meaning than appearance alone....which is what actual racialism is all about. Those claiming that Barkley (a visibly white man) has been the victim of a racial slur are suggesting that the consideration of an individual's genetic background is socially important beyond any prejudices he may experience as a result of his outward appearance.

I highly doubt it was intended that way.

Even if he knew of his Nigerian lineage, I bet 95% of the readers of his column didn't. Plus it's completely not obvious due to the fact that he's white, plays for England and has an English name. If the point of him being apparently racist was as some kind of joke, then it's totally pointless since it's going to go over everyone's head anyway.

I think it's a stretch to call it a racist article, but it's insulting and trite. Mckenzie is an absolute cnut, no doubt there. It's a shite article, from a shite excuse for a man, so I'd be quite happy if this is the last we hear of the cretin.

I'd say if a person had some heritage from another ethnic group, then you can insult them by making a disparaging remark about that heritage. We all know the monkey insults at football matches are not long in the past in England, and are still heard in other countries (to our shame). Now, I didn't know about this guy's mixed heritage, but other people on here did know. It must therefore be fairly common knowledge. Strange then that McKenzie chose that particular comparison when deciding how to insult Barkley, isn't it?

I said my brother-in-law is half-African, but is fair-skinned. His father was very dark-skinned from Morocco, his mother was English and blonde. He doesn't self-identify as white, but you and I might think he was if we saw him walking down the street. But he's not white, even if he looks white. Just like Barkley, he shares some DNA with a man from an ethnic group other than white British.

So of course race isn't just skin-deep - but saying that, it doesn't mean at all that people from this or that ethnic group have some stereotypical shared attributes because of their ethnicity. That's where the racism comes in.

I don't get the gorilla reference, whenever I see a monkey/ape in a zoo they always look like they'd do anything to be away from public view. I can't help but see their intelligence.

I think it's more to do with their status as primitive humans. He's implying that Barkley is a knuckle dragging idiot as opposed to having the features of a black man.

There's a certain irony in this that the 'gorilla who's a bit thick' has a £100k-per-week contract offer on the table just to play the game he loves. Funny old world

I think, a bit, if you say something like ''x person, who is a human being, resembles a gorilla'' there is some sort of inference that it's a black-white erm... what's the word... resonance maybe..

There is something there that resonates of racist-ness by implication - even if the object of the abuse is 'white'.

I might be saying, yes, that calling someone a gorilla is inherently racist. Not sure. It does head that way a bit & isn't good is it?

Certainly in the category of having to be very, very careful who you say it to & in what circumstance, preferably none at all, probably being best.

Well, he's got his just rewards now. Sometimes the end is all that counts. I hope his editor gets in trouble but I'm not holding my breath.

I think that if he knew about his lineage then such comparisons should be completely avoided, since they could be construed as being racist. Whether the "joke" went over people's heads or not would be irrelevant here. Anyway, it's all too hypothetical for me and I will just have to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one as I don't know whether he deliberately meant to make a racist comparison.

At any rate, the whole article is just uncalled for, really and if it weren't for it being picked up here or on the BBC I would be blissfully unaware of the drivel he writes in that poor excuse of a newspaper.

The real issue here is the vile publication that allows this reactionary piece of shit to continue his baffling series of public insults directed at the people of Liverpool.

Nobody's stupid enough not to grasp how inappropriate this is, so it's obviously done on purpose - and it can't be simply a matter of stirring up controversy either. If that diabolical rag actually felt remotely bad about the Hillsborough fiasco, they wouldn't employ the bastard, much less let him publish this hateful drivel. They share his despicable outlook on the whole business - that's the inescapable conclusion.

Indeed, the chances of liverpudlians actually working is stretching it a bit
I`m not sure what joy one can get from others being unemployed, so really don`t understand this particular joke.

In any case, Manchester actually has higher unemployment than Liverpool.

I think it's quite blatant that Barkley is mixed race of some sort, just like the boxer Tony Bellew.

Internet is full of people waiting to take offense about something or other. You can't please keyboard warriors. They're a menace.
This is the kind of ignorant post I was talking about earlier, who are you to tell someone what they should and shouldn't be offended by?
It's extremely patronising.

It's called common sense. Get used to it.

It's a bullshit article and more obvious when you consider the source. And when did Gorilla become a racist insult? If you can't identify attention seeking click bait, then you being offended has no meaning.

Seems like patronising wasn't strong enough a word. Seems like you're missing the point so there's no point in carrying on this conversation. Keep living in that bubble.

Why a comparison to a gorilla? Thick, dim, magnificent physique... Isn't this most top level footballers?

So why is it Barkley that gets compared to a gorilla? Sounds all rather deliberate from MacKenzie.

Are you actually comparing wealth to intelligence? Or have I missed your point?
