and Darmian, Fellaini, Blind, Lingard?

Its a 2 leg tie in which celta can throw caution to the wind while we could not afford to concede cos of the pressure it would bring. It was more important not to concede than to score.

The only way we could have relieved the pressure was to score 2+ goals and even without the injuries, how many times have we done that at home?
Those are still all better players than what Celta have. I think any of the other top 6 clubs in the PL would've battered Celta.

The one thing that really bugs me about Mourinho is that he closes up shop too soon for my taste. We often invite pressure on us by becoming very defensive once we're a goal up.

Other than that, the quality of football is surely better than anything we've seen in the past few years.
Our football has been awful since the league cup final though.

But as long as we win the EL, it's all good. Hopefully next season, we see further improvements.

It is shite and humiliation. It is OT, we are not playing against Real Madrid! Unbearable!

The tactics worked. Its hard enough scoring a goal against a low block much less the 2 that celta needed. We lacked abit of height in defense with blind and should have dealt with the crosses better and mourinho should have sent rooney in earlier to help darmian who was being overrun on the left but low blocks work.

This is why mourinho is so successful and we are so hard to beat. It is really hard to score when there are 8 or more players in the box from both teams. I would estimate the average time required to score a goal vs an average low block (united currently) at 60 minutes or more. Against a high quality low block which we arnt probably 90 minutes or more. Thus with 45 mins remaining and celta needing 2 goals, the odds of success are excellent. It wasnt easy to watch and we will get better at it but its how the game is played now.
Oh pack it in. This is not how the game is played now. Just because we're in the final, the tactics worked? We conceded possession and territory completely in the second half and survived by the skin of our teeth against a mid-table Spanish side at home in a European semi. The tactics were an utter failure. A collective, craven refusal to take responsibility from half time on.

Spurs were knocked out by an inferior side. Yes they didn't have all their first eleven, neither did we.

As I said, we were shit, but in semi-finals against a team that has nothing else to play for, who's best players were rested and completely up for this occasion, it was never going to be a walk in the park, especially with all the chances we missed in the first leg.

There's a few who don't mind. Which is fine.

Some of us wouldn't mind this against Barcelona or Real Madrid. The fact we were so defensive against Celta Vigo is just an eyeopener and it almost cost us.
Fair point!

But again, the fact it almost cost us, but didn't, means I don't care and can just enjoy getting to the final :)

If Guidetti would've scored, whole different story.

Jose doesn't trust majority of the players in the squad. In the games he's allowed them to go gung-ho, we created 30 chances and scored 1 goal.

In most of those games, the opposition gets one chance and they equalise - at the end of the day, we get a draw instead of a comfortable win.

Let's face it. Our players don't know where the goal is. They are happy to just shoot on target and hope for the best even when the time to place the ball inti the net is available.

I cannot blame the gaffer for his approach tonight. We had chances to score, we made nothing out of those chances. The final would be a different approach - there's no away goal rule.

Let's take this victory and hope we beat Ajax.
Don't really blame him too much for tonight but removing your attacking outlets and replacing them with defenders or DM's to invite more pressure on you and your defense doesn't seem too smart to me tbh.

They're awful and these are easily amongst the worst Europa League semi finalists in recent years. A side like United should be brushing them aside.
Exactly. Our players earn as much if not more than the other 3 teams left in this competition combined. We are getting absolutely no value out of these players if that's how we have to play it

Mourinho was always going to play along, say the right things and then revert to type. He is what he is, a negative manager with limited tactical acumen beyond getting and keeping men behind the ball and relying on individual talents to figure out the attacking side of the game.

Same shit, different game. We were six yards and John Guidetti's brain away from a thoroughly miserable season. He missed, and we've winged our way to the final of a tournament in which we have by far the best players and the biggest budget. There is no justification for this approach to games.

The most important thing at the moment is getting over the line, our absolutely woeful finishing all season is why this is the only way into Europe for us. In all honesty, if we were to go gung-ho I don't think we would be going to the final, we'd be creating chance after chance and squandering them all, only for Celta to nick some easy goals.

I'll excuse this dire football as it's the results part of the season now, we just need to grind out the cup.

Those are players Jose has show blind faith to all season. Part of the problem. They lack quality we need.

This game was played over two legs, if we're counting fluffed chances then we qualify convincingly.
Semi finals is all about getting through, all I've read on here is how good and dangerous Celta are yet when it turns out to be a close game it all comes down to Jose and his tactics?

Dave Sextons teams were a joy to watch compared to this drivel. I congratulate everyone who thinks winning is more important than entertainment though. You got the right manager and the right fecking shite on the field. The only ones I'd keep is Rash Tuanzebe (our best player against Arse but not even on the bench stupid TWAT ) and Pogba (cause I think he'll come good in 2020). We are in the final but ffs get me Ron Atkinson anyday. Win feck all but the FAcup and play offensive entertaininng footie. Bailey Gidman Moran McGrath Albiston Coppell(Strachan, had to include Stevie as he was me hero) Robson Whiteside Olsen Hughes Stapleton. Those were the days not this fecking shite. Well a day out to drink supporting the lads though but if they entertain me in the final I'd be VERY SURPRISED.

How often have we conceded 2 goals in a match much less a half? Once you take away the matches where smalling started actually very few. Celta have fast wingers and full backs and are a counter attacking team. Their main threats are sisco and aspas both fast and tricky. By sitting back they cant counter and are forced to cross or shoot from outside the box.

Celta arnt very big other than guidetti and they arnt very good in the air. The risk wasnt very high. We should have dealt with the high balls better but even then we were quite unlucky to concede that goal. It was a perfect flick over a mass of players. But thats the whole point of the low block. The opponent needs fortune to score and we have to be really unfortunate to concede 2.

Playing in a low block is uncomplex and your players dont make many mistakes. If you read mourinhos writings this is a key benefit because it is usually a mistake that results in the opponent scoring. On the other hand because of the huge amount of space to counter into, any opponent mistake is amplified and on the balance of things, the team is actually tactically balanced while the opponent is unbalanced.

He has shown blind faith to the players that haven't played regullary up until all the injuries?
Lingard has started nearly every game recently and we have had Martial, Mata, Mkhitaryan and Rashford fit. No excuse when it comes to him. He isn't good enough yet Jose keeps picking him.

Fellaini also has started games over Carrick for parts of the season when he shouldn't have.

Darmian has been first choice fullback for months.

Blind, fair enough has only played recently because of injury.

If you're putting their selection down to the injuries and not Jose's choice then you are slightly deluded.

It works at shallow clubs like Chelsea but at United it just feels wrong. We should be going for more goals all the time.

Celta aren't up to much. They are the sort of side we should be disposing of at home. Last week's performance at their place was really good given the atmosphere and I said as much at the time. But at home, with the quality we've got in the squad, we should be battering their goal. We didn't do that because we're inherently negative and it nearly cost us the tie.

Considering it turned out to be a close game because of Jose's tactics, then yes. We were absolutely coasting when we scored, failed to capitalise on that impressive spell - that part is down to the players. But once that play fizzled out, we dropped deep with the intention clearly being to sit on the lead. The fullbacks didn't dare get forward at any point post 60 minutes in - a tactical decision.

You're clutching at straws really. Lingard has been in the squad recently as we only have 3 proper attackers in Martial, Rashford and himself left. So he's been rotated as the other two have. Fellaini only really started ahead of Carrick at the beginning of the season before Jose realised Carrick and Herrera were a better fit, he was then opted for in certain tactical match-ups and rotated. Darmian is only on the pitch because Young and Shaw (even though he would have probably preferred Young) are injured. Blind is only playing because no Rojo.

Playing them cause he doesn't have any better or cause of injuries isn't blind faith. Fellaini has been in and out of the team, so has Lingard. That isn't blind faith. Darmian hasn't been first choice for months at all. He has been in and out too.

I don't think we were that deep tbh. Saying that the first goal did come from a set play but there's no way we can't defend it like we did, that's just basic.
If we conceded from open play like that then fair enough but we were so comfortable until the 80th min, our keeper had very little to do with their shots from distance and crosses into small players bar Guiddeto (spelling)

Let's be fair. Half of this United side wouldn't get into my shitty Porto one. Maybe even only Pogba and Herrera right now.

See, I don't think I am.

Mata has been available the last few games as has Martial yet Lingard has started all of them and not delivered a thing. Been absolutely abysmal.

Fellaini started over Carrick TONIGHT so it's hardly just early in the season. It's been all season pretty much. If you sat and looked the games Fellaini has started over Carrick its been a regular pattern.

Darmian has started when Shaw, Young, TFM and Blind have been available on many occasions this season.

Well that's just not true. How many players do our managers need to buy and go through before the issue starts being acknowledged as deep-seated and not just dependent on alleged lack of quality?

Fellaini's season has been disrupted by suspension, injury etc but when he has been available he has played a hell of a lot, more than he should and often at the expense of Carrick.

Darmian has had injury problems and terrible form but has played as first choice the last few months when Shaw, Young and TFM have all been available. Again that's by choice.

Until you have the quality of players needed to play at the level you expect.

To give some perspective on the low level of quality - Herrera that is so beloved by United fans, at 27, has only 2 caps for the Spain NT. At clubs like Madrid or Barcelona, he would be fighting to make the bench.

Yes, Mata has just come off a fecking operation that put him out for a large portion of the season, with very little match fitness, let's throw him into a vital second leg of a semi-final when he only played a few days ago. :houllier: You use the words 'all of them' when in reality, it was, what, one game now that Lingard has been preferred to Mata? Today?

Carrick is fecking 36 and played against Arsenal a few days ago, Fellaini given his suspension is fit and raring to go and scored the vital goal. It hasn't been all season and you yourself even know that's bollocks, in fact a huge portion of our league campaign (apart from the beginning) was with a middle 3 of Herrera, Carrick and Pogba.

Only time I remember Darmian being preferred over those players is for either rotation or for certain tactical match-ups (like against Chelsea etc.) otherwise, Young was getting played heaps before his injury.

DOn't remember some injury which has kept Fellaini. In many games we played with just Ander and Pogba or them with Carrick.

Darmian hasn't been regular in all games. Not do I think he's first choice.

It didn't need to. If you seriously believe Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba are the only two players who would make Porto's team, the discussion ends there.

I don't know where people get this 'we are a better team so we should be forcing them to park the bus' nonsense from. Juventus are in the Champions League final using Mandzukic as a wingback and parking the bus to close games out. The difference is that they have Bonucci while we have daley blind, they have Pjanic and we have fellaini, they have Mandzukic we have lingard, they have Higuain we have Rashford.

Mata has been available for a few matches now, not just tonight. And if he is as injured as you make out, he wouldn't be on the bench. He is obviously match fit and even at 80% one could argue that's better than Lingard. Martial was available tonight and has been the last few matches. Mkhitaryan has been on the bench recently while Lingard started. If you don't think Lingard is being selected by choice then you may have the blinkers on.

Carrick is 36 correct, and still better than Fellaini. I understand Carrick can't play every game but he could of played a lot more than he has, and should of at the expense of Fellaini.

Come on, everyone can see Jose likes these two and continues to pick them out of preference. Been plenty of occasions the team sheet has came out and everyone has wondered how they are playing.
