Pulp fiction, good movie but massively overrated. Not even Tarantino's best movie.

Donnie Darko, total garbage

Taxi driver - boring, maybe i watched it too late, was probably good when it came out.
Disagree with the first two, but ay, I watched Taxi Driver on a flight and it bored me to tears. It's just De Niro behaving strangely and somewhat aimlessly for a couple of hours.

Arrival - pretty stylish and atmospheric, then suddenly, language=time travel? Wtf?

Loved Pulp Fiction but agreed that it isn't Tarantino's best.

Donnie Darko is an odd one. The original (which is now hard to find) is much better than the Director's cut, as less is more. Explain too much and it allows you to say "bullshit".

I loved Taxi Driver when it came out but I haven't seen it since the 80's.

Not time travel exactly. The alien's perception of time is different but humans continue to travel linearly through time even if the main character gets glimpses of the potential future. I thought they did a very good job TBH. Probably the best sci fi film since Blade Runner.

That's true. The DC kills all the magic of the original version.

It was very difficult for me to even finish Taxi Driver. Maybe it speaks to a different generation or type of people. I found it very boring.

Could be. I loved The Deer Hunter the first time I saw it, when it came out at the cinema, but I find it a huge bore now.

Films were much slower then.

2001 being (one of) the greatest movies of all time seems to be a popular opinion among pretentious people. What makes it great?
Have you done a survey of pretentious people or are you just talking bollox??

I like the film but...what layers?
The guy said it was clichéd, which I took as him meaning either a "guy in jail for what he didn't do" "guy makes the best of time in prison" type stuff.

It's not actually clear if he did the crime or not.
The twists of stitching the Governor up, and the escape are quite unlike other movies too.

Maybe layers was the wrong word.

I haven't done a survey, but I don't think I'm talking (too much) bollocks. It just seems like one of those movies that people think they're "supposed" to like and admire and lavish with praise. My unfounded suspicion is that half the people who call it great couldn't really explain what is so great about it.

What the hell

I love that film to bits, have watched it more times than most other movies. Maybe I should record my brain activity when I'm watching it and send you the results or something.

Herbie Rides Again. Not enough dialogue.

No need for that, but I'm still wondering why you love it to so much? I was around 13 years old when I watched it so perhaps it all went over my head, but please do enlighten me.

My answer to these type of threads is always Blade Runner.

I also usually get pilloried for having this opinion.

Cliched? I don't think I ever saw anything with the layers of Shawshank!
i could give you a list of prison movies running along the same basic storyline 2ft long.

innocent man goes to prison *check*
corrupt warden, sadistic guards *check*
becomes friend with some sort of father figure *check*
finds his place in prison society for something he can do well *check*

etc etc...

it is by far the most conventional and uninteresting story of those 4 King stories, as well. All just my personal thoughts :)

All of the Oscar baiting movies ever made and that will be made in the future.

Someone had a dozen or so ideas for fun scenes which were totally unrelated. Gave them to a drunk screenwriter and said: I challenge you to make one movie out of these! Out came Pulp Fiction (It's fun to watch, though)

Last 10 minutes of 2001 is just dreadful. Enjoyed it before that but the ending is shit.

Guardians of the Galaxy is the most overrated I can think of in the last 20 years. Awful films.

What's your lot take on American Beauty? Absolutely loved it but ages ago. Afraid of ruining it by re-watching it.

Still good. I've seen it a few times in the last couple of years and I enjoy it every time. Even though some of the dialogue comes off as a bit weird, it's well acted and well made.

'Get Out' got rave reviews but I didn't really think it was all that. I mean, it's decent and the tension throughout is good but the actual storyline is fecking ridiculous. The premise is good but they could have found a much better way to incorporate a better storyline.
