I kind of see what your saying, but you've got 2 variables at play. You need to separate the two to draw a conclusion...

You've got the genetics, and you train.

You've not got the genetics, but you train.

You've got the genetics, but you don't train.

You've not got the genetics, and you don't train.
The other variable (the most important) is how quickly you lose it as you age.

Is there any other footballer at 31 who has gone from world class (or if not that close to it) to Rooneys current level?

All gone very quiet on the Rooney front, probably will start up again when new players are signed.

i wouldn't be surprised if he's waiting for a pay off from United.

Ronaldinho? He was far better than Rooney ever was and by 31 he was back in Brazil.

I can see him remaining at OT TBH. In a year time he would be in a better position to carve more money for himself as a free agent.

Yes I can see that to. Although, seeing the recent pictures of him, he wouldn't fit into the Fred The Red mascot costume at the moment. Perhaps he could help out with the youth teams from a strikers perspective. He does have a wealth of knowledge and I'm sure could really give great advice.

Wow, looks incredible.

Would that be natural? And if so, how much do you reckon he's lifting to put on so much bulk?
No idea, fergie called him fat inCarricks testimonial, don't think he looked like the pic then so god knows.

Rooney's a fat boy, Rooney was always a fat boy. It's his legs that seem to be gone. Those extra few pounds will be off before the season starts.

Rooney is a 'legend' now with plenty of influence on and off the pitch. It would be suicidal from Mourinho to humiliate him by cutting him off from the first team squad. Tbf I doubt he will, not after what happened to him at Chelsea.

Shevchenko? Although his decline seemingly happened overnight, not dragged out over four or five seasons like Rooney's.

That was really weird to see. Just had a quick wiki look at him and see he kept playing till he reached 35-36.

Wonder will Rooney even reach that age and still be playing.

Though if he did follow Shevchenko into politics I'd love it

Now that, and a lot of the early day stuff is how he should be remembered.

None of this "he was never the key player" bullsh!T people peddle.
Shame we were thoroughly outplayed in that game, eventually losing it 3-1. Your point stands all the same.

Rooney was a key member of some great squads over the years and his influence was key to United winning multiple titles during that period. It's easy to forget just how great he was. His poor form over recent years is beginning to affect peoples judgement on his career in general. His legacy is at risk I feel, as is his status as a club legend.

Where is the real Wayne? :(
I remember his amazing goal and the feeling that he (along with Fabio, maybe) was the only United player playing like they should be, but that compilation is much more impressive.

Gosh just tell rooney that he must find a new club now, 300 k on the bench without him proving his fitness or doing extra work on it is embarrasing. Mourinho must take harder decisions like fergie did with lots of players.

If you stick too long you see yourself become a villan when you dont deserve it any more.

I'm 42 years old and I look younger than him, in that pic.
His performance in the Carrick testimonial would suggest that he is on par with retired footballers in their 40s.
Are we 100% sure that he is genuinely 30 years of age?

His performance in the Carrick testimonial would suggest that he's not even on par with retired footballers in their 40s.

I like Rooney a lot, but I really hope he's not here next season so I can see his decline even further and just hate him more.

Him working out and getting in shape quicker before the season won't do much. His legs are shot. His mobility is completely gone.

Of course not. Match going fans aren't the same brand of cnut as you'll find on the internet.
I go to matches and I'd boo the mercenary cnut till I'm blue in the face, wake up ffs.

Some match-going fans lack loyalty to United, then. Apologies for not taking you into account.
What the feck does that mean, I lack loyalty because I KNOW Rooneys past it, yet I'm loyal to United not some fecking fat waste of space we all know is finished while you fanboys want to keep the twat here forever because he WAS great, what a load of nonsense, I'm loyal to united not Rooney or pogba or whoever :wenger:

Can see this getting real ugly if Rooney is still at United come the end of the transfer window. He has deteriated so much that I can't see him playing much at all, especially if we bring in a couple of attackers. He may not even be good enough to make the bench.

It is not the way to end his career here, not playing much and getting booed and criticized when he does. The money he is on is a lot to give up, maybe too much, but you would think he would take a wage hit and go to a team where he would play regularly, wherever that is.

Don't worry lads. He should be ready to play by 2018.

Rooney on holiday
Pictures of Rooney in Ibiza are causing a stir with United fans about his perceived lack of fitness.

United are due back on July 8 for medical tests.

Rooney has a busy few weeks ahead

Now I realized how master man management SAF was to deploy Ando to outeat Rooney. Ever since Ando was sent out on loan (under Moyes) then dismissed under LVG (first half of Moyes season was not that bad), our Rooney seemed to only get worse & worse.

I don't go to games often. Only went to 5 home games last season. However, every time I go there is always unanimous agreement that he needs to go. He's not going to get jeered but dont take that as people want him to stay.

I think the club want him out. At the end of the day, we're a business. I cannot believe the club is happy paying a free rider £300k a week.
What's worse, it appear the option to trigger an extension is on Rooney's side. Ed has improved his game but this has got to go down as the worse ever contract in football.
Rooney has every right to laugh at the club's £10m offer to leave if that is the case.
Neville's comments also suggest both camps are arguing over money behind the scenes. I think the club is trying to get rid and Rooney (quite rightly) is trying to get the maximum out of the club...again.
