How the feck has that happened and if there is a pre-reason for that condition why the hell it has not been diagnosed by Ajax's medical team ?
I'm sure those questions will be asked in the days/weeks/months to come but it's obvious this is not an isolated incident with athletes in basically any sport at times just collapsing like this. I don't think we understand quite enough yet what the sometimes crazy training and nutrition regimens of people athletes have on their bodies for instance, so it ll be interesting to hear if this was pre existing or not.

Either way this is terribly sad news for someone as promising as him - not to mention his family and team.

Lack of oxygen and blood to the brain I presume?

Poor lad, thoughts and prayers with him and his family. Such a young age too.

I am wondering whether or not amateur clubs are obliged to have defibrillators? Anyone know?

This sucks. Doesn't sound like there's much hope for regaining brain function or living a normal life, much less playing football ever again. Best of luck to him and his family.

Life can be so cruel to people who have done nothing to deserve it. There's no inherent fairness in the universe.

TFM's "God is in control" comment is almost offensive to me, surely there's better ways to express well-wishing than to say that everything happens according to a god's will. Was it god's will that this innocent kid should get permanent brain damage? But okay, this isn't the time or place for that discussion.

I'm with you on that one though.

That's so cruel. Maybe medical progress could see him getting back to normal in years, but it doesn't sound promising at all. Makes it even worse that he was deemed stable and it looked like he was on his way to recovery the evening after it happened.

Come on man. I also completely disagree with tfm's comment but it's hardly offensive; goodwill motivated that message from him.

Anyway, tragic news. To see a loved one merely a shell of their former self must invoke a pain barely fathomable.

Such a shame. I had a bunch of tests to check me over for football but you can never be certain.

Actually I was referring to TFM, not you, but never mind.

I expressed my concern and compassion for him and his family, so yes, I consider myself a decent human being. If I can't go on to express my distaste for something I see in this thread, what should I do? Sit here quietly? If others can mention gods, I can comment on that. I respect other people, not ideas that don't stand up to scrutiny.
Yes, but what a time to pontificate. Arrogance and insensitivity of the highest order.

This is horrible...

I really pray he will be able to live something that resembles a normal life but I fear for it.

There were 2 teams from western Europe's top divisions with 2 sets of medical crews, Nouri collapse was filmed on a freakin phone and what within minute he was surrounded by the docs who, after short diagnosis, should have started first aid treatment with resuscitation. Wtf went wrong here, because it fecking shouldn't happen under such circumstances?! Heart stops beating thus oxygen distribution is halted, so it's up to assisting people to mechanically stimulate the process.

Puts things into perspective sadly. All too common these days, at least a very small consolation when it has happened previously is most have been well into there career and at least have some financial security for them or there families.

Hopefully this young lad and his family are looked after so that what he gave to be a footballer isn't in vain. If he makes it through which fingers crossed he will then hope the football community makes sure he never needs a penny and gets the best help available.

There was an incident recently where a young upcoming racing driver in the Uk lost both his legs. The sport really pulled together around him with lots of money being donated from drivers from all series. Would be nice if the footballing community could do something similar.

We don't know how long his heart was stopped for. CPR is mostly useless and is a last, desperate, resort. Cases like Fabrice Muamba are medical unicorns in terms of how successful they are.

Sad shit.

People question the medical staff and precautious actions when things go wrong. I feel they should be thanked and appreciated for giving him any chance at all, even a very, very small one. It's never a miracle and it's not your prayers, it's a hard job well done by people who accept the fact that things don't happen by wishing they happened.

Nouri falls at the start of the video, he's still seen breathing. After 40 seconds first medic reaches him, the rest of them at 1:12. They seem to start looking for some specific medical equipment at 1:52 (still without CPR), then we get 7'30 minutes cut out. There's an ambulance and they're still on the pitch. No sight of anyone doing CPR, though I know there is mechanical utensil that can replace human with it, however I've got no idea how popular it is around the world (they're in Austria, 10km from Wiener Neustadt).
Why do you say it's useless? Just last week in my country there was an elder tourist on a mountain that suffered cardiac arrest, few people helped him out also performing CPR for 30 minutes until medical helicopter came. The man was saved and he's fine thanks to those who did the CPR, otherwise he'd be dead.

Vashu, if it's the way you're describing (I can't bring myself to watch) I can't help feeling you're right.

Tragic nonetheless :(

When you've got 2 medical teams at the spot and yet you somehow end up with player being brain damaged related to the 3 minutes time span then it's only right to ask questions. We're not dealing here with an undisputed success, are we?

First of all, I would like to expres my feelings. I thought it would come good with this super kid. A helpful kid, who goes to youth-detention centres to make positive changes in their lifes, someone who's always there for other people and he was always smiling as if nothing could ever break him. Sadly, something did break him last Saturday and I feel.. Empty. I don't know how to say it differently.

Appie, whatever happens, you'll always stay in my head and my heart.

His brother, Abderrahim Nouri, says the following in the Algemeen Dagblad at 16:48 Dutch time (if anyone can translate it any better, please do so):

"The doctors are quite certain that it won't come good. When he wakes, he will not be able to think, eat, talk or even recognize people. Just not function anymore. We however won't give up, we believe God decides," says Abderrahim.
In the familyhouse friends and family come and go, praying inside in a circle. This morning his Ajax-teammate Donny van de Beek came by, followed by Hakim Ziyech in the afternoon.

"Faith also teaches us to accept and we pray for his recovery. We hold on to that now. We believe this life is temporarily and that the eternal life comes after this, but... Everyone would've loved to see him scoring first," concludes Abderrahim.

Broer Abderrahim

I'm fully open for debate on what could've been improved or what mistakes were made once we know details, rather than guess what happened. The difference I'm trying to point out is that some people hope and wish and pray and others really do stuff. Sometimes they make mistakes. But they take responsibility, take matters into their own hands and try to make a difference. Without them he wouldn't have had any chance.

But I'm not here having a crusade against their profession. This is a specific situation with a very upsetting result that looks bad from the outside. Questions don't harm anyone, while uncritical attitude can sometimes become harmful.

Far too pre-emptive for anyone to make assumptions regarding the quality of care he received on the field. As has been previously mentioned, the entire footage is not available, so it's impossible to ascertain whether any mistakes were made. With the publicity this case has received, I'm sure there will be an analysis or investigation performed to determine whether the physios and paramedics performed their duties adequately.

Also why are some people so upset if people decide to pray for the victim or the family. No-one is forcing you to pray with them, so I'm struggling to understand how anyone could possibly get upset by that. His own brother's statement expresses a religious sentiment, should he refrain from praying for his own brother so as not to upset you all? People need to get a grip and stop being offended by every little thing.

Didn't want to comment in this thread until the outcome of his collapse/recovery was clear. This news is horrendous. I hope Ajax will look after this kid and take care of all medical bills and requirements. I also hope the doctors have it wrong and he does go on to at least lead a normal life. It seems football is completely out of the question.

Some people do both every single day.
