Players on top of my head with contracts running out next summer and who will be up for grabs for free (pre-contracts) from Jan 1st:

Alexis Sanchez
Mesut Özil
Emre Can

Edit:
Messi

Messi incredibly. Can you imagine the meltdown if Barcelona lose him on a free?

This would be easy mode on FM. Sign them on a free!

Reina
Rafinha - Miranda - Gimenez - Ghoulam
Llorente - Goretzka
Robben - Messi - Isco
Sanchez

We can't sign pre-contracts with players from English clubs in January, so Messi it is!

Surprised about Isco and Mata.
Isco is about to sign a new contract according to Marca. I'm not sure what our plans are with Mata. I can't see him being our first choice winger next season. But it will be silly to release a player like Mata for free.

Reina
Juanfran Gimenez Chiellini Shaw
Herrera Iniesta
Robben Isco Sanchez
Messi

Can't believe that Messi is out of contract. Seems like we've heard about him signing a new deal for the past 3 years. Guess he's not signed it or the new deals are only a year long.

I think we'll start to see this more often. The more money there is in the game, the less importance clubs will give to transfer fees.

I think they refinanced the deal to pay him more money but didn't extend the term the last 2 times or something.

they really do snap up a lot of the young german talent dont they... sule this summer and i imagine its a matter of time before brandt goes there -
We'd be stupid if we didn't go for those guys. They are basically playing right in our backyard. We just have to get them.
And they tend to be quite cheap. Which is a nice add on. Brandt for example has a release clause next year. It's rumored to be at about 12,5 million euros.

Goretzka appears to be going to Bayern. Don't think you'd have a shot there.

Shock of the century. Bayern get a player to run his contract down and sign him for free.

Max Meyer will be available, too. Hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire lately, but I still think he could become a great player for a team relying on a true number 10.

imagine the meltdown in here if he goes to city

I think we all expect it in fairness, (he certainly wont be joining any other team in the Premier League) so probably wont be as big a meltdown as it would have been 2/3 years ago. Still it will absolutely suck City getting a player like him.

Why would he not join any other team in the league? That's silly.

On a free transfer, we'd match anyone. Easily. There's no competition between Old Trafford and that sponsored stadium when finances are on par.

I actually think clubs will end up being priced out of transfers and players signing on shorter term contracts and leaving on frees will become the norm.

I don't think finances will ever be on par if City can artificially inflate their accounts.

There is also the fact of Pep and his buddies at the Etihad (and probably have been courting him for a while) and I don't think we would even bother contemplating the stupid amount of money required to sign Messi even on a free once insane signing on bonuses and weekly wages are taken in to account. You are right, we could afford it much like Neymar but much like Neymar I don't think the money men would seriously consider it.

Would be pretty cool to see Messi play for United though, imagine the fun the Ronaldo/Messi debate would be then.

There's no signing fee, we'd give him whatever he wants. They're still subject to financial restrictions. Neymar was 220+ 250. Messi could be 200-250 on a 4 year contract. That's affordable.

No signing fee for Barcelona I mean.

Messi leaving Barca for nothing sounds like some fantastical Football Manager challenge scenario. Sounds impossible, and hard to envisage him leaving the club that made him for no fee, when in reality he quite easily command a record breaking fee (which would be quite something, considering Neymar has recently gone for £200m or whatever).

If he goes for nothing, you can see PSG and City having a wage-bidding war, and his salary will be utterly insane. I'm sure we could flex our financial muscle in that battle too, but surely he'd want to play for Pep?

Not Paris. They're not gonna bring in the guy who made Neymar leave in the first place.

Apparently, before Rosell was ousted, the plan was to cash-in on Messi at some point and to make Neymar the spearhead. Then things became complicated.
