Jose Mourinho is expected to be approached over extending his Manchester United contract in November, the mid-point of his existing deal, which ends in 2019.

Any new agreement will depend on the team’s performance this season and although the end of May will be the telling point, negotiations about the future are expected to start before Christmas to enable a smooth conclusion to any potential deal next summer.

Neither of Mourinho’s two predecessors in the job, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes, have lasted beyond two years at Old Trafford.

Fantastic news if true. But didn't something exactly the same come out around January last season?

Doesn't his contract his an option for an additional 4th year ? Then it's still somewhat early for contract renewal negotiation.

Hope he stays here for at least 5 or 6 years.

He has said that he will get the team that he wants in the 3rd summer. Contract renewal only makes sense then. So much for his 3 yrs cycles -- which is why I dont think we will win this season based on the Jose 2nd Year Championship wins. He is building a foundation for the future and not in a rush.

At the this very moment, doubt there are many if any that want him gone tomorrow. There are people who were against him getting a job before he became United manager, i was among those. Didnt want him here but now when he is here, i dont want him sacked, not because i changed my stance, have mine own positive and negative views about him but because even if things get south, i would be sick and tired of pressing that soft reset button every 2-3 years.

If JM is smart enough he wont do something stupid at some point which will lead for him to be under fire. I would be fuming if he gets a sack and after few years i see bullshit like "JM 2nd stint at United". I know majority saying how after Wenger there wont be any long term managers at clubs, 3 year at most. I believe that there must be a moment when you look around and you realize "damn we sacked so many in a short time that there is no one new worthy enough left".

Its easy now, looking for those who were against his appointment or are against now but lets see if/when things get a bit south, who will be the one shouting loudest for his head.

Yeah, uhm, the season is still fresh, why not wait until the end?
Why not, not wait until the end?

Best manager in the world. He took us from the gutters and complete disarray to competing, having an actual identity again, a new backbone/core, no more revolving doors in numerous positions in just 1 year. Imagine what he'll do over the next few years and where United will be then.

No brainer lol...and nothing to do with 'season is fresh'. José is our guy and sometimes it's nice to award a manager stability sooner rather than later showing him he knows he's backed with the clubs confidence in him.

I'm not really satisfied

why on Earth isn't Phil Jones taking corners and letting Rooney go was a big mistake

Give him a 5 year deal, let him lay some roots here and see how it goes. Worst case would be he self destructs and we pay out £30m or whatever his contract would be... WHO CARES. We're Man United.

3 year extension. Long term contracts just don't work out (the fact that Pardew and Moyes would still be working their initial contract for Newcastle and United is a scary thought) keep them hungry to prove themselves for their next extension.

I'd be happy for him to sign an extension. It would be interesting to see how Mourinho does at a club where he can plan for the long-term.

Not yet he hasn't. We finished 6th last year and won a couple of minor cups. We had finished higher in the league under LVG and won a cup too. Hardly the 'from gutters to the top' story you're almost describing there.

He achieved his target of getting us to the CL, which is very good. But this season he has to make a challenge for the league and reach the CL quarter finals before I say we're a genuinely competitive team.

When he does that I'd gladly hand him an extension but he hasn't done yet so let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I think the support he had for the Rooney situation compared to the support he had for the Terry situation will have given him a lot of confidence and satisfaction.

Everyone calm down please! We also won our first three league games last year and had an awful league campaign, awful home record etc... I do believe he is the best choice for us but what is the desperation to do this now? If a manager is happy, he will renew his contract anyway and there's plenty of time for this at a point later this season when we are proven challengers.

There is no-one better in world football at the moment. Give him a 10yr contract. Let the players know in no uncertain terms that Jose is our man, has the full and unwavering support of the Board and that it's his way or the highway out of OT!
