Rashford is as good as Mbappé...

In your opinion is Rashford presently as good as Mbappé?

Strange comparison to make. Owen and Andy Cole were basically classic number 9 goalscorers - not really much like Rashford at all. If anything, in terms of running from deep with pace and power he looks more similar to Henry than Owen or Cole, and yes, he's got a long way to go to reach Henry's level, but he's playing at a higher level than Henry was at the same age.
I am comparing them in terms of their skillset. I don't think Rashford has the necessary poise and ball control abilities to reach the level of someone like Henry. Henry might have been inferior in a lot of other areas to Rashford at his age but he always had that ability to run with pace and not lose control which is what I am referring to and what I think Mbappe has.

Yeah, I just don't see any comparison - in terms of skillset - between Rashford and Cole/Owen.

Agreed. Harsh to say Mbappe has done it in CL against the likes of Dortmund and City when Rashford has done against equally good City & Chelsea teams in the Premier League. There's absolutely no reason to think he won't take that form into the CL with that considered.

This season will tell us a lot more about the two of them, both have started superbly.
2 different competitions and the stakes are far higher in the CL due to the lack of games. you eff up in the premier league and you have another game every week, so a loss isn't all that devastating. The the CL it could decide the tie.

Rashford doesn't seem the type to let that affect him though. Shown massive confidence to score in pretty much every debut he has made as a young kid playing for massive sides.

Yeah, confidence is one thing he does not lack. He has a superb mentality.

Well yeah @Stacks, but it's generally agreed that Marcus Rashford did more in about 5 minutes vs. Iceland with the stakes at there highest than any other England player, and in the EL semi finals last season, with his teams entire season hanging in the balance, he once again in both legs proved the talent and mental strength he has.

I see nothing to think that Rashford wouldn't handle it if he was playing in the Champions League vs. Chelsea or City rather than the Premier League.

The hype over Mbappe is insane, looks a cracking player, special for sure.

Rashford and Martial also look special imho, but too many people will pour scourn on any for mentioning the similarities.

Rashford especially is a great example, scored in huge games against top clubs, been fantastic since his debut, great record of assists and goalscoring, great internationallly too. But hey, playing for shitty club Paris Saint Germain now is apparently the yardstick.
It is far greater than of any young player, perhaps ever imo.

Martial and Mbappe are kind of on the same level. Martial just needs a few games and a decent left back behind him. Also Jose needs to stop being a pussy and let the guy play freely.

Rashford is alright, but he's not on the same level, finishing is too poor, loses the ball a lot, but hey, he's just 19.

But yeah, Mbappe is a level up on our youngsters.

Rashford lacks ability in the following ways:
  • dribbling
  • close control
  • keeping the ball close to him when he's running
  • moving at pace with the ball at his feet
  • dribbling
Those are the only qualities a player should ever be judged on, ever. Oh, and he's too English.

We haven't seen an 18 year old like this since Messi.
As mentioned earlier, he’d be extremely fortunate to be three quarters the player Henry was. Don’t be surprised if he fails to live up to his ridiculously inflated hype.

He’s very good at all the things you listed. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be able to routinely embarrass seasoned professionals in the world’s best and most competitive league. And unlike Mbappe, he has demonstrated an ability to score from headers, free kicks, and from outside the box. And that’s not taking into consideration his positive attitude and work ethic. He will be a complete player.

Surely he was on a wind up as the 5 things he's mentioned are all the same thing really.

I think this might be more or less accurate actually. Neymar was great at a young age though and I think Mmboppe will be on a similar level.

Talking about Rashford here aren't you?

What a ridicoulus thread. Nobody knows where those two will end up, but atm, there's absolutely nothing to support the OP's statement.

What is this based on? What do you think are his weaknesses or where will he fall short?

We simply don't know at this stage since he's at the very beginning of his pro career. That's why its completely ridiculous to invoke the likes of Messi as all it does it heighten expectations to astronomical levels. Let's just watch his development over the next couple of years and see where he winds up.

I really wonder how many people on here have actually seen Mbappe play outside of maybe 3-4 Champions league games last season or the occasional highlight film. Of course everyone will be able to pick out more flaws with Rashford since most on here watch every United game, so we get to see him on an off night. Mbappe is an unreal talent but the hype surrounding him is crazy and let's not forget more often than not the competition is probably not even as good as a mid-table PL team.

not even. can see Mbappe shutting Martial out of the national team but never the other way around, because Martial appears more flaky and less diverse as a player. Mbappe offers what Martial offers and more. He literally doesn't appear like a youngster. He is wise beyond his years. Martial still needs to add soo many elements to his game

Please change the name of this thread. All but the very special few would not confuse Rashfords potential very high standards, with that of Mbappe's already superstar qualities. And shame on phil and the likes for even putting the pressure of such statements on Rashfords shoulders. Marcus can already over do things, i don't want him trying to over exert himself to make a point

I can’t imagine he’s likely to read this thread or care if people compare him to Mbappe. It’s a compliment if anything.

Mbappe is not a superstar. He's an 18 year old kid with one good year on his CV. There are no guarantees that he will be able to continuously replicate the way he played last year, so let's see how it goes.

No i dont think he will be on the caf. Compliments are one thing, but Claiming a player of less ability is as good as someone who just looks head and shoulders above any one else at his age bracket is another. And simply not needed.

I sort of agree and disagree. Yes he has to produce this form for many more years to be named a superstar. Surely though you can recognize that Mbappe's past year(internationals included} have been of superstar quality. Just think this comparison as of now is a little absurd considering the gulf in current abiltiy

There is no gulf in current ability. They have both performed comparably over the past year. Mbappe has more goals because he played in a more prominent role on a team in a lesser league. If he played last year in the Prem in an identical situation to Rashford, he would've put up similar numbers. We can argue about who is more fluid/technical/better decision maker/more complete etc, but at the end of the day there's very little between them.

Haha in all seriousness Mbappe is a lot more clinical than Rashford. And as both forwards who have blistering pace and good dribbling it is a big factor. if Martial could nail down his consistency, i see him being our closest competitor to mbappe

We can agree to disagree on this one. I just don't see that extra level of clinical in Mbappe's finishing. If you look at Rashford's goals, there is little between them in terms of finishing. In fact Rashford has demonstrated he can do it from outside the box, from headers, as well as from free kicks - something I have yet to see from Mbappe.

BTW...I wouldn't call myself a Rashford fan, I just don't buy the irrationally exuberant Mbappe hype yet. If he replicates last year's performances this year and upstages Neymar and Cavani in the process and has a great WC, then I will be a believer.

I think Rashford misses a lot of chance to compare his finishing to Mbappe (who's also prone to missing some chances, but nowhere close to Rashford thus far).

Also, there have been games already where Mbappe has outshone Neymar/Cavani, despite being 7 years younger than Neymar. This is also despite the fact that he is clearly playing for them more than for himself right now. Especially with the ego of Neymar, he is not being as aggressive in looking for his own goals as he may have been in the middle of last season. I think he'll have better numbers than last season since he only really started playing for half of it, but he won't get as many goals as he would have in Monaco simply because he is looking to pass much more than finish right now, and he's smart to approach it that way for the long-term. I expect to see the real Mbappe either mid-season or next season.

I am not saying he will be as good as messi, or even henry (who became way better than I would have expected).

Just that he's the biggest teenage talent to emerge since messi - hence the biggest hype since messi, who was talked about as a future GOAT from the outset.

Yeah but its a bit loaded to invoke names like Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo (either of them) to compare a new player to them. Its a bit like attempting to compare a modern politician with authoritarian leanings to Hitler. The argument is generally lost once that happens.

I personally think Rashford isn't as good nor talented as Mbappe, but my God Mbappe is ridiculously overrated.

I've seen players getting overrated before but Mbappe has pushed that bit further. He's being talked in the same breath talent wise as freak like Messi when he hasn't shown anything freakish to warrant such comparison.

Unless he was showing freakish and otherworldly feats such as completely decimating the French league with extremely ridiculous numbers then the mere thought alone of comparing his talent to Messi is insane.

Mbappe has talent to become a world class player and that's where I'll stop for now. These talks of generation defining talent like Messi are absolute absurdities.

I have no idea whether Mbappe is anywhere near Messi's level of talent but it's worth noting that Messi himself did not put up ridiculous numbers early on in his career. He scored a total of 41 goals in his first three full seasons (05/06, 06/07, 07/08). He started posting freakish stats only after he turned 21.

Why? they were all once 'the next big thing'. The sport will move on and more and more players will end up being revered.

If you cast your minds back to 1998, especially after the WC there was another player touted who was going to be the best in the world ever, being compared to every great goalscorer who played the game....Michael Owen. As you can see what you can do at 18 doesnt neccessarily mean you are going to end up the worlds greatest player. In 5 -10 years time Mbappe or Rashford could of done the rounds and be playing for Barca or Burnley, you never know
