Second one is equally on McTominay and on him. The former heads it straight to the opposition even though Miki was right beside him completely free and the latter ... well what the heck was he doing not even running back?

For the first one it seems like he had some trouble speeding up, after the ball comes. Looks like he can't go full speed for a split second there and just kind of himps.

A few have said it’s McTominay or someone else to blame or equally to blame but naaah. Rojo let somebody wander past him and into the box to collect the ball and get a shot off.

The fella that scored even said in his interview that he had noticed nobody from United was picking up runners into the box.

It might not have been Rojo all night but it was him for the goal. Rank bad defending the likes of which would get you torn a new one at Sunday parks level from your team mates, let alone for United. Honestly, that’s school boy stuff.

Decent seeming lad but not a top tier defender in my book. Looks to be a liability to me. How does Tuanzebe not get a look in?

It's not about having this one player to blame for a goal but analysing the chain of causal events leading up to it. McTominay gives the ball away while not being pressured and having plenty of possibilities to keep possesion. It's equally conditio sine qua non as Rojo not going back and it's imo sufficiently close to the goal event as in if he doesn't lose the ball there the other guy doesn't get to lump it into the box and nothing happens.

Rojo not giving a feck is still inexcusable, I agree.

I hear you but the chain of events is immaterial to me. How far back do you go....a header from McTominay not going far enough, was it Shaw’s fault for not booting the ball a bit harder before the header, was it the midfielder on the half way line not pressing hard enough etc etc.

If you were playing and your teammate let someone wander past into the box without a bloody glance and then watched him smash in a winner, I bet you’d be raging and you wouldn’t be blaming an average header before that. The lad having a free shot was so easy to avoid if Rojo had matched the little dart into the box.

As you said, he did look like he didn’t give a feck although in fairness (?) to Rojo, I just think he had no clue that the player had drifted past him. Not bothered or clueless.....either way, it ain’t great for a United defender.....I’m still raging at how poor it was....

Had referees done their job last season Rojo would never have cemented a place because he'd have sat six games out. He'd have left in the summer.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Since it's Christmas, here's a poem I've made up about Rojo...

Glee in a 3
Poo in a 2
Cack at left-back

But seriously, how good was he looking in that 3? Very. And how dodgy has he been since we went back to the 2/started playing him at LB again? Very.

I think if we're playing a 2, Jones, Smalling or Bailly are the only 2 I wanna see there. Whereas with the 3, literally all our CBs seem suited to it and do really well in there.

Yes it was pretty bad. But hey, thats how goals are scored. Someone has to feck up. Otherwise football would be boring as feck.

McTominay was the one tracking him, not Rojo.
Mctominay might be the one tracking him, but Rojo saw the City player make the little run and did nothing. Mctominay was ahead of him (farther from the goal), so once he lost the City player, it is on Rojo to track that player. But no, he stood like a statue. And it's not even like he was tracking another opposition player.

McTominay was definitely at fault for letting his player run like that, but Rojo is a bloody defender and he is supposed to be the last line of defense before the keeper

It was a superb finish on 2nd goal. But you must be pretty blind to not see that was Rojo's man to mark.

Rojo did a great job last for a sustained period of time apart from a couple of flying challenges that refs ignored, for me however he comes across as a bit thick and playing as a CB you've got to have a good football brain - especially at United imo.

Hope, We Lose
Its strange that people seem to need to pick one player and blame them 100% for goals we concede instead of looking at the bigger picture and how several mistakes from different players cause different actions from the other players and lead to more mistakes. We have people saying no Rojo is to blame. No McTominay is to blame. Why just 1 person?

They both made mistakes and didnt do enough on the goal. McTominay's lack of tracking led to a problem for Rojo and Rojo was found wanting, unable to deal with it. Neither is ideal. One is a young player who will make mistakes, the other is in poor form having come back from an injury and may be prone to mistakes too. Its not the end of the world. But it does need to be talked about so we're aware.

It shouldn't be immaterial, since you're missing quite a key part of every bit of play you analyze without it. I agree that you need to assess the lenght of events you want to go back and that is exactly what I adressed when I wrote that the McTominay header was «sufficiently close» to the goal.

If you were playing and your teammate let someone wander past into the box without a bloody glance and then watched him smash in a winner, I bet you’d be raging and you wouldn’t be blaming an average header before that. Another question is the degree of culpability, which is something I wasn't able to recognize in my mental state last night and I would agree with you there if that is the point you are making. I'd say Rojo's fault is clearly more severe, just that it would be a bad assessment if McTominay giving the ball away wasn't contested also.

Edit: Just to be clear I'm talking about the second goal from Bristol.

Let’s be grateful players make mistakes otherwise every match would end 0-0

Rojo was immense last year. Him and Jones were the best two CBs in the league.

Remember the lad has been out for a long time and had no pre-season. It’s going to take time.

He’s been absolutely dreadful since returning from the injury. Let’s hope it’s just down to match fitness/sharpness and not his actual level post injury.

This.

Tracking or not, can you imagine a proper centreback like Rio or Vidic letting someone trot past them like Rojo did? I can’t. It irritates me more because there was no in and out clever movement from the Bristol player, he just trotted past him. Now we’re out of the cup.

It’s not acceptable from a top drawer defender in my book and I’m not trying to pick on Rojo as he is obviously a whole hearted lad. It was just a shocking bit of defending. My view is that Rojo, bless him, is not reliable enough for a championship winning side.

I’d have preferred Tuanzebe out there as there is more upside but Mourinho obviously sees it differently and is maybe trying to play Rojo into form. Perhaps he thought the Bristol game was worth the risk.

Not a knee-jerk reaction as I've been saying that for a while, he doesn't the required amount of brain cells to play as a CB for us. We have to offload him sharpish.

Couldn’t make it at spatak-feckin-Moscow yet somehow our scouts/management think he’s good enough for united.

He’s pretty shite. Always has been. Had a good patch and was wildly overrated. Brain farts too often.

Him and Smalling are not up to United standard. I can accept a defender who can’t pass 5 yards but he should be good on defending. Rojo and Smalling are shocking on both aspects. They can’t attack from the back and they cant defend as well. Get rid of them.

Isn't there someone on here who's convinced that he's all that
Feck me there are a few, he’s not as good as Otamendi at City and he’s average at best. I suggested we signed Luiz and got battered because I said he would improve us.

At least Luiz can pass around with the purpose.

Can't see why he's played ahead of Lindelof who's to be fair been excellent as CB the last weeks.

He's definitely a lot better than what he's showing this season, despite never being anywhere near one of the best defenders in the league. Shouldn't have been starting today when he's clearly out of form though.

He had a brief period is f good form last season, but apart from that he has been below par. Why not play Lindelof, who is in better form recently.

He had more than just a brief period of form last season, he was up there as being one of the best CB's in the PL last season by the time it had finished.

Lindelof has had a brief period of form alright, a handful of decent performances.

Ah that's the poster yeah. I mean I gave him credit last season when he was playing well but he's been a fecking mess since he came back this season.

No he was not, apart from a short period where him and Jones were a really solid partnership, he was pretty average.
