Our players wilted under Burnley's pressure from the start of the match. The first half was a real slog for us as our players couldn't settle into the game. Burnley were aggressive and physical, and Mike Dean was a bit friendly to them in the first half. I'm surprised that our players didn't take the physicality on board and responded. Spurs and Man. City experienced the exact same thing, and both responded to it well (Spurs with their own brand of aggression and Man. City with their quick passing tempo). We, however, responded to it by falling back and hoping to not concede a goal.
The second half was continuing in a similar fashion, but thank God for Martial's goal. That came off a great counterattack with Lukaku showing the right attitude (he did so throughout the match) and responding to the physicality positively. With that goal, the whole team became more confident and assured, and it was Burnley's turn to be on the wrong end of the ref's calls whilst we played with more assurance. It was too bad that Pogba, Martial, Mata, and Rashford were wasteful (Lingard was surprisingly not too involved in the match), else we could have seen the game off sooner.
You can tell that our midfield was quite disjointed in that match. Pogba and Lingard wanted to press up, but Matic and the defenders wanted to drop deep. The second half showed signs of improvement in that sense as our midfield played with more unity. That gave us the platform to forge better counterattacks and that Martial goal. Matic was really struggling in the first half as a result (we all know that he's slow at covering the ground and struggles at putting in tackles), but he was more effective in the second half.
Mourinho was surprisingly quite slow with his subs, I feel. I think he sensed that we were starting to grow into the game and becoming more dangerous on the counter, but honestly, I expected Mata to have been subbed off much sooner. Martial was struggling to be effective on the counter as well, preferring to drop back and look to receive the at his feet, but Mourinho's faith and belief in him rewarded us with a goal and more of a counterattacking threat later on.
Defensively, Jones basically carried us. His immaculate positioning and excellent anticipation kept Burnley at bay. Smalling was dropping deep way too early as usual, and Young was positionally very poor himself. We really missed Shaw's defensive and attacking assurance on the left side, but in the end, we still saw the game off. Oh well, I'll happily take the 3 points particularly when we were mentally beaten by Burnley for much of the match.
