Longevity and trophies don't define how good a player is/was
Sorry but that’s completely wrong. Shearer is the all time top scorer in the Premier League. He rarely gets banded about as one of the best strikers ever. Had he played for a trophy winning club I think he would be.

He gets branded as one of the best PL strikers of all time, just not international strikers. This is because he wasn't .

I could name countless average players with a bigger trophy cabinet than Luiz Ronaldo yet none of them would come close to how good he was as a player and could even be mentioned in the same sentence as him

De Bruyne is at a level right now Rooney was not capable of reaching, different players and different positions but De Bruyne is having one of those seasons where he is unplayable

I never seen Rooney be that kind of player where he dominates a game for 90 minutes consistently
That's a silly argument, no one is taking about some clogger who played a bit part role in a good side for 15 years when they talk about longevity. I'm thinking more about someone like Giggs. Never the best in the world at any point but when your consider his level over such a long period, surely that's important in determining how good the player is/was.

I don't think you have a good idea of what happened in this case. Mourinho wasn't impatient with De Bruyne, it was the other way around. The latter was 20 years old at the time and Chelsea treated him as such. He was told to be patient and that he'd get more and more playing time but he wouldn't have it. Jose didn't think he was ready to play regularly yet, especially since KDB was reportedly shit in training, unmotivated, crying and complaining all the time. KDB felt he was not a normal young player and was experienced enough to play regularly. Apparently he needed to play every week, in order to be motivated in training.

I don't think Mou was doubting his talent, just his mentality and dedication. It's possible that he made a mistake in that regard but it's also possible that KDB was indeed a whining little brat, at the time.
Exactly this. Not sure how many times it needs to be explained.

A brief explanation:

1) KDB was dropped for a game
2) Got annoyed and asked to leave
3) Mourinho said he didn't want KDB to leave but wouldn't stop him; told him he was a really good player
4) KDB left
Thanks for the brief explanation for those who need less words to retain the explanation to what actually happened.

There's no way that Jose would have ever got the best out of KDB even if he had stayed and been patient.

Would a manager sell a young Messi cheaply just because he wants more first team football and the manager can’t guarantee that? I’d say if this happen it’s all the manager fault of not trusting the players potential.
What would you do in this case where KDB wanted to leave unless he played more minutes? It was also said he didn’t put in the effort in training. Not willing to work for it but wanted to start. Keep him there wrecking their team spirit? What would you do? Jose has always said he would like to keep the players he wants to keep would not stop players who have decided they wanted to move on.

He's a slightly more skillful Gerrard.
De Bruyne is twice the player Gerrard ever was, and without the silly anger and temperament Gerrard had working against him.

The scary thing is, even with de Bruyne in a two with Matic we would have struggled today. In a three with Pogba however, and we win 4-0.

Slighty? He is better than Gerrard in every aspect and is not a tactical liability like Captain Sliptastic. Gerrard was a long shot merchant.

Not really, he is more skilful but Gerrards movement penchant to get goals was a level above, and he would be a liability himself in a midfield two of him and Sissoko or even Alonso.

If he was twice he player he would be the greatest player of all time...

Fecking sucks watching him tear it up for City. Exactly the player we need now. As much as Jose was to blame for not playing him enough, the board should have stuck a buy back clause on him if they knew the talent was there. You don't expect him to go off to Wolfsburg and tear up the German league, then get bought by a rival a couple years later. Shit happens, but that was a terrible mistake on the club's part.

He was elected MOTM in his first game in the PL. Kevin - in belgium I follow Genk - wasn't the player to work under Mourinho. He takes initiative and makes things happen. He needs to know that the manager believes in him and makes him important, Mourinho didn't do that and so there he lost him. Mourinho is more the coach - or that is what I think - who puts players against each other and the strongest will survive. Mourinho believed more in Oscar then in Kevin. That is like a goalie who makes a crucial mistake or the attacker who misses a sitter. Wrong decision.

Fully agree with your sentiment, but I don't think anyone who watched him excel at Bremen could have been too surprised by what he did at Wolfsburg.

What movement? He used to just take ling shots even when he had better options. De Bruyne could score as much Gerard but he has a far higher IQ and actually does stuff to help the team not playing hero ball like Captain Sliptastic.

Nonsense argument he can score as much but because he has a 'better iq' he doesn't score as much, doesn't make sense, goals wins game.

If De Bruyne was as good as you say he is, he would win Belgium the World Cup this summer.:)

This need to be copied and pasted everytime someone criticizes Jose for letting go of KDB
Except it's just a too simplistic view.

Chelsea bought him in January 2012 after he won all kind of plaudits in Belgium at Genk.

He went to Bremen for the 2012-2013 season again impressing in a poor Bremen team. Was one of the main reasons they managed to avoid relegation.
He had such a good season that Klopp wanted him at Dortmund as the replacement of Götze in the summer of 2013 and Rudi Völler tried everything to get him signed for Leverkusen.

De Bruyne was very keen on a big money transfer to Dortmund, being offered a central role in an exciting team which just played the Champions League final.
Only after Mourinho called him after taking the job at Chelsea and telling him that he saw De Bruyne having an important role in his Chelsea team for the upcoming season, De Bruyne opted out of a transfer to Dortmund.

He was Chelsea's most impressive player that pre-season causing a panic when he did his knee in one of the last friendlies in Asia. Was fit just in time for the Hull City game where Sky gave him MOTM. Was dropped for the following game against Villa and had a poor game in the 0-0 at Old Trafford against Evra in the next.

After that he barely featured. He wouldn't start another EPL game, accumulating only 132 minutes for Chelsea and would only feature in the games in the League Cup in which he, devoid of any rhythm, would fail to make an impact. And unfortunately for De Bruyne, he's not really the type of impactplayer that can change a game coming off the bench.

At the end of november there were increasing questions of the press about the lack of playing time for De Bruyne after which Mourinho implied not being happy at what he saw in training. Think in the lines of all the Shaw statements. De Bruyne, who already had the reputation of speaking his mind in Belgium, gave a firm rebuttal of these claims, stating that he even lost a few pounds the past weeks and was training harder then ever. Mentioning that it was a shame that Chelsea didn't have open trainingsessions to prove his work ethic to the public. I'm inclined to believe him here, since KDB's work ethic has been questioned only once and praised in Genk, Bremen, Wolfsburg and City.

Mourinho and De Bruyne smoothed things over in the beginning of December with Mourinho pointing to the busy calender in December and stating that De Bruyne would certainly receive more chances. Except they didn't and De Bruyne made his mind up and asked for a transfer out of Chelsea.

In hindsight you can understand Mourinho's reasoning at the time. De Bruyne was a relative low-key signing of Chelsea for a cheap amount and the noises he made at Bremen didn't really filter through to the English media at the time. He was competing against Schürrle, a seasoned German international, Oscar and Willian, 2 big money signings, Hazard and Lampard. He was the political safe bet to sacrifice in terms of playing time. I still feel that he by no means was less then Schürrle, Willian or Oscar but he was given way less chances and was just much more easy to justify dropping towards the press and fans. Even in november most of the questions regarding KDB's lack of minutes came of the continental press.

De Bruyne, 5 months earlier courted by the German topteams, felt betrayed by Mourinho and whined and begged to get out with Mourinho eventually relenting and receiving a nice fee from Wolfsburg. After a handfull of games he found his rhythm and immediatly starting impressing in the Bundesliga again.

Gerard was a long shot merchant that chose to shoot when he could pass to teamates open so statistically he picked worse options. As football players they are not comparable. Gerard has not had a season in his life that KDb is having. He got put as an AM where his tactical naivety wouldnt disrupt the team.

De Bruynes season is almost on par with Xavi hernandez who Gerardf will never be in the same league as. Except you want to sit there and tell em Gerard was a better footballer than Xavi..

And rightly so IMHO considering the context at the time. In the end, it worked out for him.
Don't think anyone at Chelsea sees it that way. Certainly not now.
So playing Oscar instead of De Bruyne turned out better for Chelsea? I mean, just look at where both players are currently.

I'm also pretty sure Chelsea fans would love to have KDB in their current team and maybe then Hazard wouldn't be pushing for a move to Real Madrid.
I'm not 100% on this but was it not Lampard who was in his position at the time?
At the time we were playing a 4-2-3-1 and Oscar was the 10 with Schurrle and Ramires playing on the right. It was really bad bc they were not right wingers and were playing for their defensive work just like Oscar was. I believe we played a 4-3-3 at OT and KdB was played on the right, was our MoTM and then dropped forever. Salah looked shite, can’t really blame the club for selling him at all. KdB was capable of doing things our other “attackers” couldn’t.

@Thetouch Which is why I still do not entirely believe all the stories floating around about Luke Shaw. Since it was customary for all the talented players who left Chelsea at that time (Lukaku, Mata, Schurrle, Salah, Etc). All those players suddenly were players with "attitude" or "mentality" issues when they fell out of favour at Chelsea.

I don’t think that’s true at all. No one else was said to have had attitude problems than Lukaku. Mata, Salah were deemed not good enough and wanted to play and I think the board just cashed in on Schurrle.

Some really odd posts in this thread.

De Bruyne is excellent but going by this thread you'd think we are seeing another Messi.

There's always a point on the caf where posts get ahead of the player. It's happened with Kane and it's now happening with De Bruyne. Anointing them best in the world, or in that class, off the back of domestic football.... football that is not the pinnacle of club league football ala early 90's Serie A, early 00's La Liga or mid 00's Premiership.

De Bruyne's true tests of where he stands in the world game are going to be revealed in the Champions League and World Cup, as they will for Kane.

All we can say for now is that they're tearing up a decent league until proven otherwise by how far the collective of clubs get in the CL.

De Bruyne has been World Class since 2014. The only thing that has really changed is his role.

World class is defined by what you do on the world stage. De Bruyne has been an excellent player for a long time, but world class means you're outshining anyone on any stage. Has he done that?

In terms relative to those who are the longstanding elite, De Bruyne, like Kane (and Hazard), has yet to prove himself.
