That was the golden era of drafts where big names were given the credit of being big names and no too many cooks shenanigans.
Well, not really, won the semi on the basis Cruyff-Diego-Mané would never work. Some things never change, sometimes rightly so.

Then we got bored with calling them great and started treating Maradona as glorified Deco while Gunter Netzer was handcrafted by footballing gods themselves in 24 carat gold who never lost possession in his entire career. God forbid if there is Valery Voronin (who I famously recall being mocked by you in the same draft that we won as 'imagine having a guy named Valery in your team  ' ) supporting him in midfield, who used to come in Rijkaard's dreams when he was a kid teaching him the art of tackling.

I'm just kidding of course.
Too right! Although my greatest claim to total kudos decimation was posting this picture of some Amancio chap who happened to be playing against me on the opposite wing to Paco Gento.

Interested to hear how people rate Sergio Ramos.

I think he’s really underrated personally, but the tide seems to be turning slightly (fairly imo). He’s a bit chaotic but he’s got to be one of the most decorated defenders to play the game.

His limits technically were show up a few years ago when he played the deep lying defensive midfielder role against barca. His touch, passing and awareness were shockingly bad, and in his favoured CB position you can see at times his distribution is not anywhere near top level. What he does have though is an excellent understanding of space and how to position himself, In his last 5/6 years he very rarely gets beaten. I think he learned a lot from What Ronaldinho did to him, and worked hard at not being so rash with his decision making.

I'd have him in a team which is attack minded and likes to dominate proceedings (not possession before people jump the gun). In a defense minded team, against the best oppositions, I think he will get caught often.
I know he played in Jose's counter attacking teams, but in an all time draft, I wouldn't even let him have a sniff.

I don't massively rate him as a defender but do as a leader, which is a big thing with me. It's not a coincidence it's always him scoring to snatch ET/victory from the jaws of defeat in absolutely massive games. Immense in that sense. Would I see him keeping the All-Time best attackers in his pocket? Not a chance. Decent job, not a liability, but the problem is what he really brings to the table is a very hard intangible to make count in a poll-based game.

He's playing for a big team and often his inefficiency are masked by other defenders. For me always has been a liability at the back, especially in all time sense. Doesn't have the discipline, nor the reading of the game or positional sense - something great defenders have. He's the typical modern day defender - great on the ball, can score load of goals, excellent in the air, but when it comes to pure defensive ability he falls short..Very short.

He's much better as a CB tho, as a RB he was found out almost every time he got against a quality winger, not to mention Dinho making a mockery out of him far too often...

Against the very elite strikers in the game as Fenomeno, Muller, van Basten, Eusebio, etc IMO he'd get annihilated..

For me if you're picking someone like Ramos it has to be in a back three, if you're going to take a punt on him against GOAT attackers. That way you've got two GOAT CB's covering his ass and hopefully a GOAT RB.

That way he can be aggressive, go in for tackles etc and his undeniable goal threat comes in handy as well.

In a back 4, he's a liability against anyone half decent IMO.

I think very few modern defenders would not struggle against those strikers
Some more than others tho. I'd say he'll get sent off around the hour mark after already been skinned couple of times and anyone of those being on the way of a hattrick.

Any modern defender would struggle true, but I trust someone like Godin to hold his own much better for example.

As @Raees said you have to have a GOAT backline to cover for him in case he gets skinned.

Agree with that.. I don’t rate Ramos as a great defender but his personal record is phenomenal..

We can fix that.

@2mufc0 I have Krol who would fit into your team like a dream. I'm willing to offer him for Burgnich and 60m cash.
Yes he's perfect for my project but I'm not Ed Woodward mate, more Harry Redknapp so a much better offer required.

As a leader he's top notch. The amount of silverware won is beyond doubt as well. Maybe 30-40 years from now he'd be lauded as one of the generation greats and would cost 140m+ in auction drafts like Baresi :)

I think he deserves to be remembered a great of the game, but as long as it is with a caveat and people sell him the right way.. no point lying and pointing to the trophy haul and saying he must de facto be a great 'defender'. He's a great player - a legendary player but that doesn't necessarily translate into great defender.. so its up to the guy who buys him to bear that in mind and find a way of selling him in a particular set up designed to minimise his deficiencies but maximise his strengths (leadership, charisma, warrior like fighting ability, GOAT goal threat from set pieces in big games).

Interested to hear how people rate Sergio Ramos.

I think he’s really underrated personally, but the tide seems to be turning slightly (fairly imo). He’s a bit chaotic but he’s got to be one of the most decorated defenders to play the game.
Personally, I feel Godin has been the best CB in Madrid for the last 7-8 years... The way he organizes that Atletico D is second to none.
