Was a good player before (sadly) declining.

I hope people won't start compare him with all-time greats like Sergio Busuqets as the time passes.

No, he wont be compare to master peek-a-boo like Busquets. Xabi Alonso is more apt. A proper gentleman on and off pitch.

Got a little bit emotional watching his press conferance when I realised that he's our only player left from that wonderful 2008 season. It's also very obvious how uncomfortible he is when talking about his upcoming retirement. I get a feeling that he would like to play a couple of seasons more had that heart condition not changed things for him.

Happy that he will stay on as a coach though, and hopefully he'll get to end his career by picking up a trophy!

Pretty odd for footballer to get to that stage where they are seen as finished and veterans but if they go back into normal life they are still looked upon as fairly young men.

Amazing start they have if they are smart with their money and don't have any incoming long term issues with their bodies. Those who have a degree of anonymity to go along with that are blessed, would be spending a year traveling and exploring the world before I even thought of going back into work.

Good player. Did a decent job over the years. The song does him no favours though. He's literally nothing like Scholes. Couldn't be less like Scholes if he tried. Now Scholes, there's a great player

Not quite so good. If I remember right there was a fair bit of drama due to us not winning the league in three years and the Glazer takeover.
True. Then we signed Carrick and started winning everything again!

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Hard to pick a favourite moment, but those two goals against Roma in that game are definitely up there.
Absolutely. It's kind of strange as it was a goal when we were already 5-0 up, but his second goal in that match is one of my favourite ever goals. One of the sweetest strikes of the ball you'll ever see, he barely seemed to hit it at all but it absolutely flew straight into the top corner. There have been plenty of more important or emotional goals, but that was one of the most beautiful I can remember.

Loved Carrick, and he's been one of my favourite players ever since we signed him. Definitely sad to see him go, but it's probably time.

Consummate professional on and off the pitch. When he was at the peak of his powers, what a player!

I've never seen a more underrated player than Carrick, criminal how few England appearances he got when compared to the likes of Gareth Barry and all those years England tried to shoehorn Lamar and Gerrerd into a midfield two

Even at United he's been stupidly underrated and without question one of the top 5 Central midfielders to ever play for us

It’s weird to think how underrated he was by our fans. Mufcmufcmufc this one goes out to you buddy. You know with his cowardly non tackling play and giving the ball away all the time.

Terrific player. He looked absolutely gutted that he had to announce his retirement. But, seems accepting of the fact that his body has had enough of being a pro footballer.

Will miss him on the pitch. His calmness and ability to find the right pass was incredible.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
Once the EPL ranking is settled, the final few EPL game(s) would most likely be his last game(s) captaining and playing for us, with few more new young academy players.

Even if no longer at his best, his play is still so impressively simple and efficient, the excitement is there.

Would be good game(s).

I honestly felt that Carrick would have been seen as one of the best midfielders in the world if we had a proper midfield partner for him at his prime.

He sacrificed his game early in his career because he needed to help Scholes cover more ground and never really got a chance to work out a partnership with Fletcher before that was killed off when Darren got sick.

The fact that Gareth Barry has more appearances for England than Carrick does just tells you why the English football team has been fecked over the past decade.

Why did I think this was already known? Have I just assumed it had already been announced because it was so obvious?

Regardless, what a legend. Model professional. Class act. Anything good that can be said about a professional footballer = Michael Carrick.

Good man, the right decision for all parties. Would love him to stick around, he'd make an intelligent and knowledgeable coach.

Me when Keane retired: "We can never replace Keane"

Me when we bought Carrick to replace Keane: "WTF?"

Some time later: "Carrick is quite some player. Well I told you when we signed him didn't I?"

Me when Carrick retires: "We can never replace Carrick"

One of the best players we have in recent times, he won everything worth winning for us and was a cornerstone of our success.

Thanks for the Memories.

Mourinho basically said it about a month ago in one of his press conferences I believe. Carrick's just making it official now.

Legend. Very easy to call him that without thinking a debate will happen.

A true professional. Hope he continues his marvellous career as a coach.

Great servant to the club and I am sure will make a great coach.
Those knocking Pogba and Sanchez should do well to remember the stick Carrick got in the early years. Patience reaps rewards!!!

Bellow, no way. The best holding I have ever seen.
Not really. I love Carrick, but would definitely rate Busquets and Alonso over him. Both of them have an edge offensively, but Carrick was a tad better in the defensive side of the game. Plus both Sergio and Xavi had the advantage of having operated in far more set midfields than Carrick who always had to operate in a mix-n-match.

I knew it was coming but it still makes me sad. One of my favourite players ever, hugely underrated by many and I hope he can play a game or 2 this season.

Loved him before he came to United and was sold on him after watching Spurs draw 1-1 against Arsenal at Highbury, it was a performance that would have made Pirlo or Busquets proud and he was just 23 at the time.

At United, he's been majestic. One of my favourite United players for sure, although I seem to say that about almost all our 2008 starting team

So many of SAFs players reinvent themselves. Scholes from a AM to a deep lying play maker. Giggs from a tricky winger to a CM. Valencia from a RM to a FB.

Carrick was another one. The fans criticised him for not continuously playing like he did against Roma in 07. What they didn't realise was his game was evolving. He was becoming the cog that keeps the clock moving. His positionin and interceptions were improving. You look at Kante and how he took the Premier league from Leicester to Chelsea, or look at Makelele, and Carrick begins to make sense.

His off the ball positioning was so good at times that, when it went wrong, we'd concede. In one memorable match in 2010 ish he kept Lampard is his pocket for the whole match barely giving him a touch.

Get the ball, keep united going forward. Get the ball, keep united going forward. Get the ball, keep united going forward
