Had a shortlist of twenty, I think. Very easy to dig up players who are in the «solid» category at worst - players with undeniable records/CVs at that.

British keepers have been rather shite for a while now - but generally the opposite was true for this draft's era.

Aye, there's plenty of solid performers there. One problem, just in terms of selling them, is that many of them have little to no international career to call on, simply because the likes of Jennings/Southall/Shilton/Clemence effectively monopolised the GK position in their respective national teams for so much of the timeframe.

Oh yeah, when we were discussing the difficulties of building a 3-5-2 from this pool, Lee Sharpe was the one I had in mind who could feasibly be cast as an attacking wingback, given that he filled in at full back on occasion.

Part of that story, though, is that a couple of those clearly overstayed their welcome and lived on very little but experience (which can be very valuable, of course) and reputation (which is worth exactly nothing on the pitch) during their final years.

In general, caps (lack thereof, more precisely) aren't a reliable indication of quality in this time frame: There are some positively bizarre cases for both England and Scotland (not least), i.e. players who were barely capped while being - blatantly - better than those favoured by the manager (or the FA, for that matter).

True.. This period also coincides with some of the worst performances by the English National team.. Combination of poor tactics, injuries, bizarre team selections and of course other teams being much better

Absolutely true. There's some excellent players from this era with a derisory number of caps and, conversely, some lesser ones who racked up healthy appearance totals.
