Why on earth would wolves do that? His price will skyrocket once they are in the PL and he is still performing.Didn't we see Ruben reves as a replacement for Herrera? We need to get him and loan him for another season in EPL with Wolve.
Jorge Mendes is his name, imo he'll spend one season in the PL showcasing his talent and then will be moved on for big money. How is this guy playing for Wolves. Looks a very classy player indeed. All season long as well.
Almost anyone not too defensive would fit Matic and Pogba in a midfield 3. The more leaning to the creative side of football the better.Mendes, do your thing. What midfield position does he play? Would he fit alongside Matic and Pogba in a 3 man midfield?
Cheers for the intel. My wife is a Wolves fan, so I’ve watched him a lot.
Firstly, believe the hype. Watch a reel of his goals this season - all outside the box, and his goal tonight is as good as anything you’ll see in ages.
He’s got a great engine and really fantastic passing range, but the most impressive thing is how much he’s applied himself - it would be easy for him to play with an ego given his pedigree, but he’s installed himself as *the* heartbeat of the side.
Pleasingly, he’s a snide little fecker at times as well - he’s not going to ever be bullied out of games. At just 21, though, he’s occasionally showed an petulent streak that has / could have cost his team dear.
He’s obviously still developing but would be a terrific complement to Matic and Pogba. I like him and he has the feel of a United player.
Let’s see what happens with him.
Top player who should have stayed at Porto, unbelievable how Nuno barely played him last season, I love William from my club and have great respect for Danilo, but for me Neves after Paulo Sousa (before knee injuries) is the best midfielder Portugal produced in the last years. He has an excellent right foot and can spray pin point accurate passes across the field. Not the toughest guy physically but not weak, similar to Herrera in that regard. Smart player, would fit in nicely and give more freedom to Pogba.
Am I right in thinking that Neves is unlikely to start for the NT at WC?Top player who should have stayed at Porto, unbelievable how Nuno barely played him last season, I love William from my club and have great respect for Danilo, but for me Neves after Paulo Sousa (before knee injuries) is the best midfielder Portugal produced in the last years.
1 month ago I would say he probably wouldn't go to Russia. Now with Danilo injured for a long time, William with some problems at Sporting I wouldn't say its impossible, only if William doesn't recover well for the WC Neves will start against Spain, but lets see.Am I right in thinking that Neves is unlikely to start for the NT at WC?
Kind of a central and holding midfielder hybrid, I reckon - dunno if he should be pigeonholed in either role at this stage of his career. Has a long way to go yet, but as a central midfielder he could develop into a less robust version of Schweinsteiger circa 2010 - good passer, scores some vital goals from outside of the box and has good workrate for the position — very complete and has an edge to his game, but not as influential of a box-to-box dynamo as Bastian. Alternatively, as a holding midfielder - he could improve his defensive/tactical game along the way considering he already has good positional sense and is quite neat-and-tidy, and become a comparable player to Xabi Alonso towards his mid to late 20s, in functional terms at least, if not qualitative — albeit with a less consistently expansive passing range, as things stand. Definitely someone United should be looking at not only because of his youth - which gives you great scope for improvement over the years, but also because he could play on the right of Pogba + Matić in a midfield trio and be a seamless fit because of how well he theoretically complements both, and has the potential to move into Matić's spot in the future - leaving the third spot open for a tireless box-to-box player - a bit like Marchisio for Juventus - who took over some of Pirlo's playmaking duties from deep-set midfield positions as more of a holder:Looks class. Is he more DM or CM?
Would you see him as a starter straight away for United? Or indeed United when we used Carrick + Pogba + Ander for a bit - with Neves reprising Carrick's holding role.
Even at Porto, he came across as a potentially brilliant talent after making his debut at 17 (and arguably the best central midfielder Portugal has produced in the last decade — if not more), but then he kinda lost his way and the coach didn't seem to fancy him too much. Glad he's starting to deliver on his potential in earnest.
Hard to say, considering a lot of these prognostications end up being waaay off the mark. While he's performing at an exceptional level, it's still only the Championship week-in and week-out, and starting for United (and performing well) would be quite challenging because he'll be stepping up a level in terms of the league, and several levels in terms of the profile of the club, and working with a manager who's isn't always the most patient with developing players. He might benefit more from a season or two on loan to further polish his game at a club like say Villarreal — where he can play across the diamond with Trigueros and Castillejo, or possibly at Monaco under Jardim, but if he starts at United, I'd reserve judgement for at least the first season as he comes to grips with all the changes, and look at it as more of a medium term project because he certainly has the potential to make a midfield spot his own for the long haul.Would you see him as a starter straight away for United? On the plus side we'd essentially be covering 2 positions with 1 purchase and possibly free up some money for other pressing needs, mainly 2 full backs and a potential RW.
Seems much like my own thoughts. It's impossible to tell how well he will step up and if he does then he'd probably need a season or 2 adjusting. Something Mourinho won't want to risk next season with everyone demanding we get closer to City. Also, have to consider how highly he rates McTominay. Would he want 2 young CMs in his 5 or 6 it's looking like we'll have.Hard to say, considering a lot of these prognostications end up being waaay off the mark. Neves is on a different planet to Scott. There is no comparison.Seems much like my own thoughts. A team like Everton would feel like the next logical step for him if he wanted to play in the prem. Also expect Wolves to do quite well next year so he could maybe have another season there before moving on.
But does Mourinho see it that way? Mourinho is all about trust and workmanship. He fully trusts McTominay to do a job. Also my point was that he wouldn't want 2 young cms in his 5/6.Neves is on a different planet to Scott. There is no comparison.
Aye, he's rapidly becoming my muppet dream for the summer. Seems perfect for us in terms of position, skill set and attainability. If we aren't atleast interested in him considering our positional needs, then there's something wrong with our scouting.
Was just reading a Wolves forum, and some of them are saying that he's their best player in the last three decades or so. Can we have a Wolves fan on the Caf? Would be nice to have perspective.
One of my mates is a all out Wolves fan. He has been on about him since the start of the season and cant stop talking about him. So I have watched Wolves quite a bit this season. I agree with everything you say but what I find most impressive is the way he dictates tempo, he is actually quite brilliant at it. At 21 years of age he really looks like a player who could become a midfield Maestro.. Hope we are interested , if we are I guess Mourinho could use his connection with Mendes to get him here.My wife is a Wolves fan, so I’ve watched him a lot.
