I remember he got injured in pre season against Madrid, he never looked quite right after that. Then he started the season quite poorly, then got injured and had a long lay off. Then came back against Sevilla then got injured again. It's been a frustrating season for him.
That could explain his early-mid season form. A healthy Herrera is one of the best glue guys for the squad. fitys in well, does his job with no fuss and lots of bite. Not superstar material, but effective nonetheless. One of my favourite players. And to think LVG tried to stifle this guy. Mental.

Viva Ander!

Fantastic performance by Ander yesterday. Not only defensively, but its nice to see him getting forward too. Well deserved goal. Super finish!

He is one of the players that just gets United. From the first day you can see that he completely understands the club and mentally he is United through and through. He is one of my favourite players, plays with his heart on his sleeve and just takes no b***s**t from any opposition player.

He should be made captain when Carrick leaves, the other candidate for this in my opinion is De Gea. But De Gea is less vocal I think. He does however play every game and is undoubtedly the best in the world which commands respect. Might tempt him to stay at United too.

Its the theatrics.
I don't see that. He isn't much of a diver and doesn't roll around the ground more than most?
It just seems to have picked up steam that he's a cnut player and I can only equate it with being very good at nullifying better players than himself.
He must be a practitioner of the dark arts to upset Eden Hazard...

He has quality, he loves United.

He is a niggly little player but that’s his game. It’s not all he is, he’s a great footballer but has a nasty streak when push comes to shove. And I think that’s more of a quality than a hindrance for us.

I love that he has found some form now. Hopefully he can stay fit all season next season. We should keep, and play, him and spend our budget on fullbacks. If he can keep his game up I’m not sure centre mid is as big a problem as other areas of our squad.

That definitely adds to it, but what I'm talking about is sometimes, Herrera makes a big deal out of nothing challenges, especially when the opposition is trailing. Its hilarious when he's on our side, but I understand if it rubs oppo fans the wrong way.

He had a better game Saturday but this guy is fantastically overrated on here. Wouldn't get on the bench for one of our proper teams. We need a player of his type in the MF, so he is a 'good fit' from that point of view. And yes he competes & winds up the opposition, there's even the occasional decent pass but that is very much the exception rather than the norm.

He has plenty of heart but that's about it for me. Just isn't good enough overall & the opposition supporters are not wrong in thinking that he is a potential liability discipline wise.

I'm not a fan - but it is just my opinion. Also, I might be wrong, but I don't think that I am.

If you could combine him with Pogba though - and then split that into a player or into 2 players as it would be, we might be on to something.

What proper teams?

2006-07 we had Carrick and Scholes as midfielders with Fletcher as back up. Alan Smith even played few games in midfield.
2007-08: Same midfield and added Anderson
1998-99: We had Keane, Scholes, Butt and then jordi cruyff.

Herrera is better than Smith, Anderson, Jordi.

We bought Hargreaves in 07/08 as well.

No reason to let him go in the summer with Carrick and Fellaini going. Always have been Herrera fanboy and will continue to be!

You have to ask the question as where has he been all season?

I know he was injured during the Seville game but before that?

It hasn't been a great season for Ander, but he is a quality player on his day, and one of my favourite players at the club.

He has a lot to offer and his energy is great.

Hopefully next season we will see the best of him again.

I had no doubt that he'd return to form as he is a very good player. With him, Lingard and Sanchez in the team we look so much more tenacious in terms of our pressing in the middle third, which is so important for a Mourinho team. In the absence of this type of pressure we drop deeper and deeper and invite pressure onto ourselves, which culminates in some of the poorest performances we've witnessed this year.

I think a lot of United fans on here seem to believe that every player should be a solid 7+ out of 10 every single game irrespective of form and injuries, which is completely unrealistic. In reality he's had a very disrupted season and hasn't managed to get any real level of match fitness... According to Physioroom for example he's had 4 injuries from July to February.

I can't recall any previous scenario where our player of the season; a player who has shown nothing but passion for United, gets so little goodwill when it comes to his performances and the context around them. The amount of posts calling for him to be sold for having the audacity to be injured and not return to his absolute best within 5 minutes of gametime is bizarre.

If he were playing for Liverpool we'd be using him as an example of a fantastic player who was available for a decent fee who we should have been all over.

Big fan of Ander. Works best in a 3. He's kind of like a more cunning, dirtier, sneakier version of Ji Sung Park. Scores important goals now and again as well.

You are demonstrably wrong, on at least one count. Herrera has played over 150 games in the last 5 seasons and has been sent off once in that time. That liability you perceive him to be simply isn't real. Worth bearing in mind that over that time he hasn't even reached double figures for yellow cards in a season. Granit Xhaka is a potential liability discipline wise. Herrera is much more disciplined. If your perceptions of Herrera lead you to misinterpret that clear-cut fact then it seems likely your overall opinion is decidedly more negative than it should be.

Cmon Cyber, the guy dives all the time and falls over whenever he gets the slightest touch  He just plays the game though, others are just as bad, it's the spanish snideness from La Liga.

Playing in Pogbas position. This continually gets forgotten about. It's no surprise we didn't see him at his best when he was asked to play that role.

There's been a lot of hype since Saturday. I even clocked one guy saying he should play instead of Matic, ignoring that the whole reason we bought Matic was Herrera couldn't play that role.

That said, I think you're a little too far the other way.

I think we could upgrade him for a third starting central mid, but if we prioritise elsewhere I'd be happy for him to stay starting.

Exactly. I made this point so many times. He played when Pogba was injured and there is no way he can play Pogba's role because of different skillset. When he plays with Pogba they play well as a team as both compliments each other. Pogba is better at passing range, dribbling and attacking in general, Herrera is very good defensively and covers lot of distance.

Again, but why? Is it the way he looks?
It’s the way he plays. Breaking up play with cynical fouls, play acts occasionally and somehow gets away with it. When he was sent off v Chelsea it had been coming since day one at the club. How he didn’t get booked till last 10 mins on sat I don’t know.?If he played for someone else we’d hate him, no doubt.

I'm quite happy about Herrera. He struggled in 2/3 of the season but is finishing it on song. I'm not sure that he is good enough to start regularly for a title winning team but he is good enough to be a great squad player for such a team.

I don't understand how Herrera can be considered overrated here while he was getting slaughtered most of the season when his form was poor. He's getting what he deserves currently.

He’s also better than Gibson and Cleverley but nowhere near as good as Fletcher Scholes Keane or Hargreaves (top drawer players). Think Butt edges him also but arguable although I suspect if he was here the same time as Anderson, I think most United fans would have chosen Anderson over Herrera as he was a potential superstar when he came. So being better than a converted centre forward (who’s injury blighted his career) who played a big part of his career in the lower league after leaving us and a winger who was very average is not a great marker imo. We need better than Herrera who has had the last 4 years to break into the side with 3 different managers and still can’t cement a place in the 11 or manage to look convincing for me.
By the way I gave him pelters on here last week and I’ll stand by that but Saturday for all his faults I had stated he went onto be excellent after the first 15-20 minutes but this like too many of our players I suspect won’t save him from being replaced come next season with Jose. Yes he’s definitely not our biggest problem far from it, but I doubt he’ll be anywhere near the regular starting 11 next season and wouldn’t be surprised to see him move on if we get a decent offer and I don’t think that would be a big loss as Mctominay could step in to cover our new signing.

I haven't even read what you posted, my reply was to the poster saying he wouldn't have made the squad in our previous proper teams. We had inferior players playing, we didn't have 2 Keanes and 2 Scholes as options.
