The complete dead silence after. He knew he fecked up royally
Nah, he said "to borrow a phrase from American sports, Iceland beat Argentina 1 - 1". He knew exactly what he was saying. It's similar to an excerpt from a Roddy Doyle book (the van?). The narrator says something like "we got beat 0-0 by the Faroe Islands, drew 1-1 with Belgium and beat the English 2-2."

Never change America.
Man, that edit deliberately removes the context in order to get in a cheap and undeserved laugh. Iceland were massive underdogs to take a point, the fact they got one is a kind of victory for them.

Exactly.

The “history” he’s taking about is...

The draw won us the group.

It's a cheap cliche that is so machoistic of an American sport image. It's a draw, it's all about point accumulation not always about the pure result when it's a group stage. Say it's a great draw and it feels like a win because of historical World Cup context and expectation. No need to be cute around it or spin it.

We finished level on points with England and both had a +1 goal ratio. The USMNT won the group because it scored more goals in total than England.

The draw won us the group. So... yeah. The draw was a win.

What’s so cliche about all of this are people automatically assuming that he didn’t know what he was talking about because he was American.

What’s funny is how many “knowledgeable” people don’t know that he’s referencing a past event.
Ehhh, the fact that the USA isn't even in this WC Final makes it even more weak because we can't actually reference the team. I despise Fox sports programming already to a large degree (nevermind Fox News!). But oh well. Really good for Iceland and well deserved.

What’s that got to do with anything?

As I said in my edit above, the most cliche thing about all of this are the people assuming he didn’t know what he was talking about because he’s American.

Agree with you. He knows what he said and why, but too much too soon. With the US getting the 2026 WC this past week, it's another one of those things that we'll get dinged with for a little bit and it'll be spun against the "country that calls it soccer".

That will just go to show other people’s ignorance on multiple levels.

From Roddy Doyle's 'The Van':

"Bertie summed up the campaign so far.
-We beat England one-all, we lost to Egypt nil-all and we drew with the Dutch. That's not bad is it?"
The commentator, just like Bertie, is quite obviously comparing the Iceland result to expectations.

This World Cup has been pretty great as of now hasn't it? Some wonderful, evenly matched, games. Besides the Russia match all others have been tight contests, even those that would look one sided on paper.

I have loved every minute of it so far! Even Iran and Morocco was a good watch!

Add in Australia Ireland this morning and a bit of golf later in the evenings and this weekend is an absolute festival of sport!
