Ah yes I remember last Euro when Buffon didn t save a penalty. De Gea didnt have a good tournament because of Ronaldo's goal. However, his average tournament didnt affect the spanish team. They finished first and then decided to take a no risk approach against Russia. All the outfield players should be critisized more than De Gea.

The media and social media will jump on it though, he will be one of the scapegoats

Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
I never saw De gea as a great penalty stopper.

But in a match he makes so many amazing saves.

He is the best there is.

If he actually signs the new contract we have solved the goalkeeping problem for years.

Mind you I rate Romero very highly too.

I hope he gets to play a good number of games next season.

Red Card for Casemiro!
1 save from 7 shots on target. Forget the penalties, he should have done better by even average standard, forget his own high ones. It's fair to say he had a very underwhelming WC.

It is by no means the end of the Spanish road for him, though. He was terrible for us at the beginning, too. He needs people around him to trust him and he'll grow into the role.

Forget media, social media or opposition fans, some of the ManUtd fans are no better.

Why are people getting so defensive ffs? He should have done better, especially for a keeper of his quality. Those penalties were hardly unstoppable worldies and even a good keeper would be expected to save one of those and give his team a chance, let alone of the best in the world. I don't see why people must defend him at all costs regardless of the situation.

If anything, it solves our potential problem with Real coming in for him, that ain't happening anymore

I love De Gea to bits but just like Oblak who is also a world class keeper they both suck in penalty shootouts. Nothing to be ashamed of though.

It's weird though. He is a terrific shot stopper otherwise.

Surely with some work and continuous practice and getting of the line etc.. He can improve his penalty saving ability.

He should thoroughly work on that. That and also coming of the line quicker in general game play as well.

Is this something for which we should question the goalkeeping coach? Or is it on himself?

I don't get it either. I can understand a sentimental attachment to players when they are performing for your club but if they go on and play for their countries, it's entirely different.

There are few who are stupidly good at saving penalties. Diego Alves and Handanovic.

Diego Alves record is 25 saved and 31 conceded.

Handanovic's record since he moved to Inter is also very good.

Very strange tournament but I couldn’t give a flying feck how De Gea does for Spain as long as he’s performing for United. Hopefully this will distance Real Madrid from him.

Not the best tournament from DDG but if that turns Madrid’s attention to another keeper and he extends his contract with us... then all the better

That's a ridiculously pointless stat.
It’s not really. It’s not totally conclusive but an indicator. Then you can look a bit deeper at it. Some of the shots he could nothing about but others he could have stopped, like Ronaldo’s, Morocco’s second and at least one of the penalties. And, in fairness, the stat was used to hammer Bravo so can’t ignore it now.

His penalty saves percentage is pretty much the same as the other top goalkeepers (bar Neuer) I think. That said penalty shootouts are completely different in keeping as much as taking a penalty in one is. Wasn't a great WC for DDG but tbh it's not been a good tournament for keepers anyway. We've seen quite a few mistakes, Neuers keeping has been odd too and even the England keeper is under scrutiny.

People might be right that like CL, WC seems more about scoring the goals than saving them and we all know what happened in the final of that game.

7 of those shots were penalties, one was a Ronaldo free kick, one was a bullet header, one was a one on one after an Iniesta/Ramos feck up and one was genuinely a blunder. Stopping Morocco's header would be a wonder save. The only save he made was a one on one situation.

There's another way to phrase that stat. "David de Gea only conceded two goals from open play throughout the entire World Cup. Narrative."

"David de Gea's World Cup has been a disaster," AS adds. "The penalty shootout was one more example. In the third Russian penalty with everything in favour to stop it, incomprehensibly the ball went through him."

A little harsh on DDG imo. He’s not been at his best this WC, but surely he can’t take the blame for yesterday - Spain were simply awful, cautious and uninspiring. I’m surprised the Spanish media haven’t picked on Koke and Aspas for missing penalties.

He isn't particularly good at saving pens. Much worse keepers than him do a better job regarding pens. Hope he shows the opposite next season and wins us a big trophey by saving some pen(s).

He had an awful world cup. Maybe he isn't someone who would thrive at the highest level, maybe he doesn't have the mentality for it.
He needs a situation where the defenders (Jones-Smalling for eg) are not as imposing in stature as Pique or Ramos (who have been no better than our pair at the world cup), as well as a very supportive fanbase to keep his confidence high.

I'd say he should be thanking his stars he's with us. Hopefully, he starts the new season with a point to prove in trying to repair his damaged reputation. The motivation should only help us.

Indeed some of the worst keepers at the very highest level have been great at saving pens however it is an area Dave should work on

Sorry but this is a dreadful post. Despite our failings over the past few years, if playing for Manchester United is not the "highest level" then I don't know what is. This man has been showered with nothing but praise from United and opposition fans alike in England over the past 3 years because he's done it for us consistently, over and over again.

A few below average games in a World Cup and he dopesn't have the mentality for the highest level? Rubbish.

Mou will take care of De Gea's confidence once he's back at Carrington. I ain't worried.

Just tells me that there is obviously one area where DDG needs to improve - penalties. He'll get around to it sure enough and watch him do it as good as Oliver Kahn by the time he's 30

He was under a lot of criticism early in his United career and developed into one of the best keepers in the world, I'm sure he will bounce back from this.

Random question.

Say we got to the Champions League finals next year and it went to a penalty shootout. Would you want us to sub off De Gea for Romero?

If being a premier league winning keeper isn't thriving at the highest level then I just don't know...

Didn't watch the yesterday. Just saw the penalty shootout. Sorry, IMO David didn't do anything wrong. Last two Russian pens takers put theirs in the middle. That was unlucky.

I agree that De Gea can put more effort into putting off the penalty takers, making himself big and intimidating (the psychological aspect), studying the penalty takers' movements and their favourite spots.

This can, to some degree, be learned. It reminds me of Edwin Van Der Sar. He was horrible in stopping penalties in his early days. A Dutch journalist wrote a book about saving/taking penalties and questioned him why he doesn't practise penalties. Van Der Sar got angry and slammed the claims telling the journalist that it is a lottery.

Anyway, dunno if Edwin read the book, but he did put in more preparations and practise and he did quite well in stopping pens late in his career. The big man himself admitted it.

It's lower than that.

Think he's saved 4 out of 25 he's faced for Man. United so shade under 20. Add in the six he's faced in this tournament and it's about 15%.

Guess he's just a keeper better on reaction saves given all the miracle tip overs he does from headers and stuff from six yards out when you get hardly any reaction time.

Just find it odd he couldn't read one players run up yesterday and move earlier to save a penalty.

He didn't try to read the players run up. He just picked a side and went for it. That is the only thing you can maybe blame him: not holding his ground and reading the movements and run up.

Two different tactics.

I'm more worried about his refusal to leave the goal and come forward to clear/collect the ball. How many times have I seen him neglecting this which usually creates havoc in our back-line and in the best scenario, leads to a last-ditch clearance from one our CBs who wait for him to come and collect the ball. He can be passive at times.

Still the best and will get even better I'm sure. Of those goals Spain conceded he can only be unequivocally blamed for that one howler.

The only penalties I remember him saving were Arsenal (RVP) and two against Everton (one in the FA cup against Lukaku). All to his right again - why can’t he dive left??? Haha.

Apparently he was the only keeper of the four yesterday that stayed on the line during the penalty shots. Although he did come off the line for 1, maybe he needs to bend the rules more if the refs/VAR aren’t going to enforce it.

He was a bit too honest. You saw in the Denmark/Croatia game the goalkeepers standing a yard away from the takers, bellowing at them before they took it, and then launching three steps off their line each time. Akinfeev did the latter each time as well. De Gea did neither.

I don't really care about his performances for Spain, but he could probably do with adding a bit of cynicism and nastiness to his game in general. I don't think his career and his reputation is going to rest on how well he does at penalties, as he is still top class at just about everything else, but seeing every goalkeeper bending the rules quite heavily, then he should be doing the same.

Overall, I'm not worried. The calls of him not being that good anymore are a bit daft. He's still the very best at open play saves, close range, one on ones etc, and that's a much more significant part of goalkeeping and what sets him apart. There's nobody better in that respect. Kasper Schmeichel is very good at penalties, but never in a million years would I want to swap him for De Gea.

Messi is crap at taking penalties, but you wouldn't swap him for Rickie Lambert.

Gutted for him, but I do hope the bad WC lowers his market value so he ends up staying with us for a very long time

Would not trade him for any GK in the world right now. 4 bad games, regardless of the high level they were at, do not invalidate the 40 world class games he's had and all the game-saving performances he'll have for us in the future.
