I think you have fair points but I remember SAF being a scary miserable old scot who only mellowed in his late years, but you'd hear that he was a different character off camera and depending on who he was interacting with.

Regardless, I get your point but I have only been dippng in and out of all things United this summer so I've been immune to the negativity gripping the caf... So far. So can't relate right now :D
Yeah, Fergie could be a right grumpy so and so. That's a fair point.

Here's a more balanced view re Chong from Jose. Nothing here that anyone can disagree with.

“Tahith was good,” Jose said. “He came with the intention to show himself and in a moment when we had no strikers on the pitch, after Anthony Martial had left, we needed people to create and have some initiative, which he did.

“The action for the cross which led to the goal was beautiful. He was enthusiastic and he had the confidence to play. Of course, physically he has limitations and when he has one more touch, and that body contact, he loses for everyone. But when he makes the ball move and when he attacks people one against one he has quality. He is a good kid.”

”We have plans to make him [Chong] train the most possible times with us because that increases his evolution. He has to play where he belongs, he has to play in the Academy and he has to work physically because physically is where he’s not ready. Technically he’s very good, tactically he understands the game. He understands his position. From the physical point of view, when the game gets into important situations, he’s in trouble, he’s fragile. He’s a kid, he’s still a kid, the talent is there, the personality is there, the passion, the desire to play, the humility to learn, so it’s a fantastic experience for him if he can play like today 20-25 minutes in every one of these five matches. If during the season, he trains with us and if during the season, he has a couple of occasions to play minutes with us, I don’t know, it depends, especially some cup matches. Of course he’s a good kid and it’s not for today, but for sure, he’s a good kid.”

It's amazing how when you just lift one or two quotes here and there it can come across so negative.
I like those quotes. He's not putting Chong in the spotlight and proclaiming his greatness but it's clear he rates him and has a plan for him and will not rush the kid.

Good 1st pre-season game. I was focusing on Shaw, Pereira, and how Martial played as a 9 and came away impressed. Martial should have scored. I hope he could played more as #9, so we can rest Lukaku once in a while. Pereira played very deep and hardly advanced. He looked technically as I expected though. Shaw had been involved in the front often and seem to have good condition. I am still bit worried about our LB situation though.

The best moment was probably when Chong was playing. I agreed with Jose that he is still a kid and, physically, probably can't handle PL matches, but he is certainly technically talented and can be a great player in the future.

I don't understand jose's comment on Chong's physicality. When I watch him he seems physically dominating.

More informed people here, do you have the same view as jose's on this?

Where did you watch him be physically dominating?

I'm assuming Jose didn't base it on 45 mins of a friendly alone, but more so on what he sees in training every day.

Just watched the game. There's nothing more exciting than seeing promising youngsters impress. Brings such dynamism into our game. Chong looked great and I'd hope to see him getting the odd appearance from the bench early on in the season. Not heard Jose's reaction, but of course he lacks physicality, he's very slender but technically

Great to see Pereira as a deep playing midfielder. Thought he was pretty good overall.

We really need a ball playing centre back. But what else is new.

I haven't seen the match, but I've just watched Jose's press conference on the MU YouTube channel. He say's he has no attackers, yet the same channel has videos of Martial in training. Did Martial not play? He should be the central striker surely if Lukaku, Sanchez, and Rashford aren't with us yet?

He means that come our first match the only senior attacking players will be Martial, Sanchez, Mata and Pereira since he'll likely play there based on who'll be available then.

Caught up on the game. Not too fussed about result, of course we want to win but fitness comes first.

It’s not ideal when we field a team like that. It is quite far from what we hope to see come the start of the season so am not too surprised to see the side look a little unbalanced in the final third (more than we saw last year).

Was impressed with Chong’s display. Though he wanted to impress, he played with a level head and played to his strengths and worked hard both ways. Hope to see more of him.

Amusing how fans get so het up about pointless friendly games, which should be just there to get people fit & try out different players & formations. I couldn't care if we lose every friendly match for the next ten years, & all England ones either. As long as are succeeding in competitive matches, that is okay by me.

Just finished watching it, the game itself was so dull, the only winner is that their fitness will improve playing in the heat against a team ready to start their season.

positioning similar to Bailey and Fosu Mensah. Mata is still class on the ball but as a United Fan you seriously have to worry about his engine and stamina in the intensity of the PL to be our first option down the right wing
He shouldn’t be on the right wing. Inside on the left, he excels.

Jose's comments are very balanced. Clearly rates Chong's ability and has a vision and plan for him. The media headlines are really disgraceful

it is good and an honest opinion from Jose, hope Chong impresses even more and make him think about more than a couple of cup games, he is the same age as Januzaj and Rashford when they got their chance in the first team and did really well. So hope he gets more chances if he impresses regardless of how physical he is now

I'm surprised at some of the negative reactions to the Club America match. It was the first game of preseason: you expect to start okay and get worse throughout. That's what happens when your team isn't match fit, they will weaken as the minutes pass.

We were playing a team that's less than a week from the start of their season. If they were not quicker and sharper you would have worried for them with the Mexican league about to begin.

On the plus side it was a good workout, we didn't lose and the kids looked alright. Particularly Chong.

Was good to see Chong taking his chance to impress and most of the players that will be facing Leicester got plenty of minutes so it was all good.

Chong was also tracking back and helping his fullback defensively. Someone should ask Mourinho why Mata is a mainstay in the team if physicality is the barometer in which the players are being judged. That guy gets pushed and shrugged off the ball numerous times in a game.

Where the grass is greener.
Those are brilliant quotes from Jose on Chong, and quite frankly put the people in their place who keep saying Chong is an option for our RW this season. He's not, and there is no need to rush him into such a spot.

Was he the only one? If he is downing tools even when given the opportunities to show something then he needs to feck off. Hopefully not the case but how is he so out of shape in comparison to the rest of the squad.
He was the same last pre-season IIRC

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
I thought Martial was terrible if I'm honest. Felt like he lost the ball almost every time he had it. Hopefully just a bit rusty after time off.

Hard to judge Shaw in such varying roles but I felt he was one of our fittest players. Most of our team looked gassed in the second half. Good first half from Bailly but we were all over the place in the second half in defence. Herrera frustrating with his constant backwards passing.

He's clearly not there physically. Its fine in his age group as 95%of them are the same and he's if anything bigger than them due to his height. In the PL he'd struggle with the physicality like any kid his age, and then his height works against him as it doesn't give him a low centre of balance.

It doesn't mean he can't play at first team level if it's felt he'll offer something (Rashford still isn't quite there physically yet), but I don't think Jose's comments are that far from where he's at...there's just no reason to rush him in. See how he does on the tour and training with the first team and go from there. Saying he's not quite ready or you want to develop him in the right way is no slight on his ability/potential.

Lingard for example came into the team a similar way and much later in terms of age.

Just watched the full game.

As everyone else has said, it's mainly for fitness. Was nice to see players get good game time under their belts, because I can imagine quite a few of those players will be involved come the start of the new season.

As well as fitness, Jose will be wanting to try different things. Tactics, systems, runs, etc. He went with the 4141 that we played often at the back end of last season, and I can imagine we will continue with that going into the new season.

What I will say, although it's only pre season and our first game, having watched it showed we are still guilty of what we struggled with throughout most of last season; movement off the ball and getting bodies forward. You don't need a full pre season to do that! It's all about instructions from the manager.

Going forward, Mourinho really needs to sort this problem out. It's why we struggle to break teams down.

Other than that, as I said, it was nice that the lads got a good run out. Hopefully Martial's injury is too bad.

Really good to see Chong. Impressed me big time.

Against smaller teams at home..
Pereira
Fred - Pogba
At some point I'd like to see:

Matic
Pogba Fred
Periera
Lukaku Martial/Sanchez

Diamond formation 4-4-2. Would be very interesting to push Periera forward as number 10. Pogba and Fred box to box midfielders. Would need top fullbacks to provide width though.
